All,
The revitalized VATUSA Data Services and Integration team is hard at work with multiple projects already in progress. One project is a revitalized website. I\\\'d love to get some public input on either updating, or not, the VATUSA logo. Please see the logos below and vote in the poll for your favorite. Pay no attention to the size (I am just too lazy to resize them). Thanks!
1.
Thanks!
-
I suggest a user submit from the general VATUSA membership
-
Great suggestion, Chris, I've added that guidance. Thanks!
-
I didn't think #1 would ever be considered an option as I just made that as a placeholder, haha. I can change the color(s), etc pretty easily.
One thing I'd request is a height not greather than 100px, and a width not greater than 450px. Anything larger would unnecessarily increase the size of pages. But if a logo is selected larger, please make it scalable.
-
Well. Number 5 is good option. Plan and simple... Good job logo maker
-
By the way, no stuffing the ballot box, please......

One thing I do not like about #5 is its size. It's a big tall.

Can always be adjusted. If you want the PSD, PM me.

Sounds good, thanks. We'll see what the voters say.

One project is a revitalized website.
Please tell that another project is to change the forums to something which doesn't have a dark background!
This goes for both the forums and some of the suggested logos: we do not live in 1900s! The era of "hey everyone does a white background, but I'm going to make it special and give it a dark background" has passed. The era of "let's have 10 colors and 20 lines in our logo" has also passed. Simplicity and standardization are now key parts of web design. I'm sure VATUSA6 and VATUSA12 would agree.
-

It was part of our discussions, yes. I'm sure Cliff would agree, but I know the design I'm working on focuses on lighter backgrounds and I think Cliff is following with the forum design.
-
Went with 5 but I think there could be better. #2 (the current leader) is way too busy.
-
Hey... a new candidate entered the race after some of the voters already cast their ballots. I smell voter fraud!! I see this ending in lengthy litigation.

Merik, today's change is just for you!
-

What, you can't change your vote? I can't find any settings in the admin panel to allow you to.... I'm so sick of this forum software. That said, it won't be here too much longer.....
-
I voted 5, it's clean not distracting. #2 is way too busy.
-
I hope the changes don't include bootstrap.... Bootstrap is becoming the norm and it's not different
-
1 or 5. Both look crisp!
-

In Florida, we call that a "pregnant chad" or a "hanging chad."
-
I really think the one we have now is rock solid, but if somebody could take it and just modernize it, that could be the way to go!
-

Bootstrap a is UI tool just like Zurb's and any of the dozens of others out there. It provides a solid starting point for creating fluid websites and web applications, it's up to the developer to take that base and make it stand out from the "norm" (or to not do anything and party on like it's 1999 )
-
I like #1 and #5 from a design perspective. 2 is a no-no because of the 3D thing, 3 would be good without the radar.
In fact, #3 with a transparent background and without the radar scope on the left would be pretty awesome IMO. See below image.

-
Perhaps you could use number 5 without the map and then center the text and slogan? That would look interesting in my opinion Number 5 is my vote though.
-
Here's a few variations on #5 since a lot of people seem to like that one...
First, an updated version of the original with the background outline and text position tweaked to allow for a wider (read: less tall) aspect ration
[img]http://dugan.io/img/vatusalogo-updated.png\\\" border=\\\"0\\\" class=\\\"linked-image\\\" /]
Second, one that gets rid of the background map and draws the letters in pretty closely
[img]http://dugan.io/img/vatusalogo-tight.png\\\" border=\\\"0\\\" class=\\\"linked-image\\\" /]
Last, same as the second image except that connections were added on the top of VAT and bottom of USA
[img]http://dugan.io/img/vatusalogo-connected.png\\\" border=\\\"0\\\" class=\\\"linked-image\\\" /]
-
Figured I might as well take a swing at it....I voted for the current logo, but if this could be considered it is my vote (style 1). I can send over the PSD to the logo and star if needed.
Style 1:

Style 2:
[img]http://i.imgur.com/MuSho4V.png\\\" border=\\\"0\\\" class=\\\"linked-image\\\" /]
the star, but larger...could be used as an icon/favicon stuff like that.

-
I'm digging that one, Ryan. Looks really good. Prefer the second over the first, though.

Agreed. The spacing between the T and the U needs a bit of work, but that's promising.
-
Merik, today's change is just for you!
Thank you! I feel special!
-
I like what we currently have, don't have any problem with it. However, if a change is in the mix, I would have to cast my vote for #2. The one thing I would change about it is the typeface and/or font color for 'VATUSA'.
#1 and #5 are bland and leave me unimpressed.
Just my opinion, which does not seem to be the popular one.
-
These were emailed to me. There are a couple variations, but here is 2 of them for consideration as well.

Seems more of a banner than a logo, in a practical point of view.
-
I agree with Dimitri.
Also, I don't completely agree with the way we are designing and selecting logos here. Graphic design is not something everyone can opine on, with all due respect.
I recommend reading http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/06/12...signing-a-logo/ (http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/06/12-essential-rules-to-follow-when-designing-a-logo/) and paying special attention to rules #4 (clever use of colors), #9 (keep it simple) and #3 (size matters). Most of the proposed logos don't meet at least one of those three very basic rules.
I also recommend presenting the logos in at least two different sizes: a small one that would go on the top left of documents (like PDFs) which would be no more than 200px wide, and a larger one to be used on top of the web pages. If a logo looks anything but great in the smaller size, it should be thrown away. Again, that applies to some of the proposed logos.
If anyone is offended by my comments above, I am sorry but you should take it personally. If you are designing logos that don't meet those basic ideas, you are trying to do something you have no clue how to do.
-
I like Style 1 of Ryans. Very cool
-
Glad some of you like it! I figured I'd make it bigger and I added some effects to it to give it a little bit of body rather than the flat design I originally had. I'm not sure which one I like more, so I'll let other people chime in.
Don, maybe we should let other people design some stuff then hold a vote? or is this vote the final one?

Ryan,
I like it, but something with the letter spacing still makes it look slightly unbalanced in my eyes. Dimitri, Merik, or some of the other guys can chime in, but perhaps you might consider kerning the VAT to be spaced a little bit more tightly to create uniformity with the USA portion.
-
[img]http://i.imgur.com/UVBbuNP.png\\\" border=\\\"0\\\" class=\\\"linked-image\\\" /]
I think it looks better without the shadow IMO. Maybe try giving it a little space between the T and U and some different color combinations and maybe remove the italics?
-
I honestly didn't know what I was starting when I threw that poll up there.... All I knew was that I had 2 new guys playing with putting together a new website, both shot me a different placeholder logo, and even though I know the last time submissions were requested we had no interest, I figured I'd at least see if there was interest in something new out there. Boy, is there!
That said, no, this isn't a final vote by any means, but a great avenue to get the creative juices going and get some good options in case we want to make an update. Keep at it!
-
I think you guys are right, the VAT text needed to be tighter and not connected to the U. I tried it without italics and it didn't look right next to the star. Here it is, may need some tweaking. I'll mess around with other color combinations later, but I really like the darker blue and red personally.

That is the ticket right there. Very nice.

I like it. I would suggest you remove the little white star on the bottom left, it's a focal point and takes away from the logo as a whole.

Means VATUSA is becoming stronger and not weaker like has been the trend with participation over the last several years. Good to see maybe the rescission as i call it is ending slowly.

I second that. Also, perhaps make the rest of the star (parts that are dark grey right now) appear in blue? I am assuming you want that start to remind one of the US flag; then red, white and blue is the way to go.

The star is red and blue. The blue is a dark muted blue, is everybody seeing it as grey? I'll have to tweak it I guess.
-
No need to tweak the blue.. Looks new and unique
-

It is up to you. The color code for that muted blue is R=67, G=77, B=87, so it is very much grey with a tiny hint of navy blue. Compare that with the color used in standard US flag: R=60, G=60, B=110.
The red is also a bit off; you have 216,52,58 while the red in US flag is really 180,35,50.
Here is yours:

Here is yours if you had used standard US flag colors:

I would use the revised blue, it POPS more than the gray blue. With that said you need to make the VAT the same blue as the U and A.
-

I don't know about this. Then the "S" being red makes no design sense.

Good point.

Alright, thanks for the feedback guys. I did a little tweaking. I tried taking out the white star on the swoosh, but it looked funny and the swoosh did not make any sense after that so I put it back in. The real problem with the little white star is when the logo gets resized the white star looks like a tiny white dot.
I made VAT blue and USA red in both the navy/ red I originally had and the USA flag ones. Personally, I think using the USA flag colors looks odd...the blue seems too bright and the red almost looks purple or something (the nex is closer to a purple than a red). I like the original colors I came up with, however I uploaded both for everybody to decide on their own.
Rather than uploading another image I just made an album on imgur (http://imgur.com/a/L6pJB) that has the original logo, the rearranged colors, and then the new colors.
Something I have not tried yet is making VAT in grey and then USA is just red or just blue. That may be ok too, depends on if everybody likes grey or not.
-
Gotta take out the star, not going to back down on that one. If you refuse, let the VOTE decide
-

I updated the album with a new logo that doesn't have the white star and I added "vatsim united states division" to the bottom to see if anybody likes or dislikes that. I think the swoosh looks empty and confusing without the star, but when you make the logo smaller it is hard to see anyway.
-
Not one to interfere but I really like Ryan's Logo.
-
Not one to interfere but I really like Ryan's Logo.
Which one? As of this posting, he has four (http://imgur.com/a/L6pJB).
As for the star issue... I personally like it and agree with Ryan on its necessity. Sure, on the smaller sizes, you can't see that it's the typical 10-sided geometrical shape so commonly used to represent a star. Darn. Look up at the night sky some time and tell me how clearly you can make out the apparent shape of those tiny little specs of glimmering light. (In other words, I like the fact that the definition of its shape fades with the smaller sizes.) Plus, it's hard to support the ol' "Red, White, and Blue" without having the "White" somewhere.
EDIT: And just because I'm usually difficult (but in this case it really does align with my preferences as well)... I would vote for an option that used the blue from the 3rd image in either the 'U' and 'A' or the 'S', but I'd probably go more for the red used in the other images. I could go either way on the text at the bottom.
-
Please drop the gradient. The "V" should be all the same color, not darker in the bottom and brighter in the top. Same for all other letters. Gradients are so 1990s.

Describing things that differ with your personal tastes as being "so 1990s" is something that is, like, so 1990s.

I bet you have a corner office window there too Don.......
-
Yep, corner office penthouse suite including full wet bar, hot tub, massage tables, etc. But don't worry, it's all been paid for a long time ago by the vTaxpayers.... Doesn't affect your vRaise this year at all! (now I'm waiting for comment from Fred....)
-
Sweet deal indeed. I didn't know that your middle name was "vHuerta"
Don't worry about Fred. He's out of town at a vNatca conference feasting at their grand buffet. You should see the size of those shrimp.......

You read my mind. Now I know where that damn raise I was promised last year went...a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue in his new corner office. I didn't know we were now even simulating the government bureaucracy of the FAA!
