FROM THE DESK OF THE PTC DIRECTOR

***PRESS RELEASE***

Over the past few months, I have been coordinating a Pilot Training Program for the Jacksonville ARTCC, much like ZLA has, but a little different.  If you would like to participate, you may shoot me an email at [email protected] with your name, VATSIM ID, and a detailed description of your online experience.  I, as the director, will then assign you to either the Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced course.  Once you pass the course you are assigned to the next course.  Once you pass the Advanced course, you will be a fully-certified ZJX Pilot!  All Operations will be conducted on the ZJX Teamspeak.  You will receive the information once you sign up.  This program is intended to help pilots and controllers become better accustomed to the VATSIM environment.  Although the majority of you online flying will be done in ZJX airspace, we will travel to ATL, MIA, MMUN, and beautiful MSY, along with many others.  In the advanced class, you even have the option to "Cross The Pond!"  This will be a fun and educational time for everyone, so SIGN UP NOW!!!

How exactly does this differ from the ZLA program?

Well, we only have 3 courses: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.  I'm not precisely sure what happens at the ZLA training, but we do it in classes.  There will be one class a week for each course.  A pilot must also pass an "OTS"-type test to be promoted in the system.  We are currently in the process of getting a website up so you can see more information.

Hi, I'm confused. Isn't ZJX and ZLA both parts of VATUSA? For that matter, don't they both fall under VATSIM? Does VATSIM prefer one or the other or is it kind of like any group can do whatever they want?

Bill, the ZLA program pre-dates the release of VATSIM's pilot training initiative.  VATSIM's global initiative, still in development, will allow for individual organizations to provide training and issue ratings on VATSIM's behalf.

I would recommend that pilots evaluate any given training program to see if it provides value for them, and then opt to participate or not, regardless of whether it will result in the issuance of a globally recognized rating, or just an entry on a local roster.

The program is to help new pilots overcome the fears of flying on VATSIM in a friendly, educational environment.  No, it does not have any VATSIM endorsement or ratings, but it can and will help make the VATSIM experience better for all.
