Otherwise you'll need to find a really fast jet and then fly around the world westbound several times...

The Control Room Floor / Local Radar Approach Control (LRAC)
« on: October 28, 2014, 12:08:32 PM »
A few ideas off the top of my head (though I'll admit I'm not a r/w controller and might be wrong on any/all points):

  • You still wouldn't use "radar contact" phraseology, although you would start radar tracks on things like transitioning VFR traffic and accept radar handoffs for IFR arrivals (although perhaps that last one applies to any tower with a CTRD?).
  • Traffic information changes from "ahead and to your left", "on a right base", etc. to the full o'clock/distance/direction/etc. phraseology (again, perhaps this is just any tower with a CTRD?).
  • You can vector traffic (not just departures using a DVA) in your airspace using headings.
  • You can increase your departure/arrival rate by providing radar separation between departures/arrivals.
  • You can switch to using mileage rather than time for wake turbulence separation (again, might just need CTRD?).

EDIT: With #1, I should say I think you will very rarely ever hear a tower say "radar contact". I recall hearing it once from Boise Tower (KBOI) for a VFR transition, but IIRC they're also an up/down facility, so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it.

EDIT2: By the way... where is this coming from all of a sudden? (Just wondering what the context is as it applies to VATSIM operations.)

It's a nice thing to do to inform the tower or radar controller what your intentions are (especially because they'll often ask if you don't).

However, if the controller is doing something else and the conversation ends up going like this:

"XYZ Tower, N12345, VFR request"
"N12345, XYZ Tower, stand by"

then you can still enter the C/D airspace.

The Control Room Floor / VRC - Simultaneous Log On

If you were using Euroscope, however, the answer would change since Euroscope has a proxy that can allow multiple instances to share a single VATSIM connection.

With VRC, this isn't possible.

In the meantime, note that the VATUSA training wiki (which may or may not be recommended/used by a given ARTCC... some of the material is slightly outdated) and the training materials of a given ARTCC should, as Don mentioned, be freely available. If you have some ARTCCs in mind, check our their websites and look around their "For Controllers" (or equivalent) sections. If you had any questions before making your selection, I'm sure most (if not all) ARTCCs' training staffs and/or ATMs would be glad to answer them.

Welcome to VATUSA! (Well, sort of... you'll be in after Don finishes docking Michael's pay until the data hiccup is resolved  )!

Note that the monitor function is peer to peer and may or may not work depending on your and the controller's network configuration.
... and if that doesn't convince you right away to not use it, also note that you won't receive any of the text communications either.

Which browser (name and version) were you using?

If you've never visited it before, there should be a box overlayed in the center that looks like this:

Can someone refer me to a tutorial on how to install vPilot?
Sure! Step-by-step, the process is:
  • Download vPilot
  • Double check on the file you just downloaded.
  • Follow the prompts.
  • There is no step four.

There's also the Installation section of the vPilot documentation.

I also need the latest version of SimConnect, which is not up-to-date.

From the vPilot documentation:

So ZJX should have more points than ZLA because their featured airports see less traffic.
I think he was referring to the fact that within those ARTCCs, their "high score" airport has a lower score than their "low score" airport.

Just seems odd... and potentially embarrassing as if someone forgot how the number line works.

From a "Climb Via/Descend Via" FAQ published by FAASafety here:

[!--quoteo--][div class=\\\'quotetop\\\']QUOTE [/div][div class=\\\'quotemain\\\'][!--quotec--]8. Q. I am cleared to “Climb Via SID”. What if there is a published altitude restriction at a fix that is higher than the charted “Top Altitude” ?
A. You are only cleared to the charted “Top Altitude” contained in the narrative of the procedure, unless ATC assigns a different altitude.[/quote]

that is one of every EC's job responsibilities.  Rarely accomplished, unfortunately.
Perhaps it's due to their pay? I think we should get some division-sponsored funding for all ECs!

General Discussion / I GAVE UP FLYING FOR LENT !

Glad I could help out. Also glad I fortunately woke up on time (yes, I'm a lazy bum on the weekends and sleeping till past 12:00pm isn't that out-of-character for me ).

Congratulations on a successful charity event - it's always awesome to see such positive results from what some consider nothing more than a hobby or even just a game.

Brad G. and I can mention this at ZLA so we can make sure you have something, if not just to put the word out.
Aye, and I'll hop on CTR if no one else takes it. Otherwise, I'll try to grab LAS_APP (or perhaps schedule a training session during that time...  ).

(notwithstanding the 'expect filed altitude 10 minutes after departure)
But that's the key here, innit?

If your average groundspeed from runway 25R to SHEAD was 250 knots, it would take you almost right at 10 minutes to get to SHEAD. Considering you've got an extra 45 NM to get from SHEAD to DBIGE (the AoA FL210, which also happens to be the MEA between SHEAD and DBIGE)... the FL190 is a non-issue; either you're with CTR and they've either climbed you higher, canceled the restriction, or vectored you for holding... or you aren't with CTR because this is VATSIM and CTR isn't always online, in which case you execute the lost comms procedure of climbing to your filed altitude.
