General Discussion / Re: VATSIM Discord Server
« on: March 31, 2017, 07:58:36 PM »
I would caution those interested in Discord.  The company behind Discord was previously sued for involvement in violations of privacy, wiretap and various California state laws. The privacy policy and past of the company involved is questionable.

Useful information.  Thanks, man. :D

General Discussion / Re: ATIS question
« on: March 26, 2017, 05:50:08 PM »
These work for me.

To turn off the FSX voice ATIS:
Options->Settings->Sound->Volume levels
Uncheck "Voice"

To turn off the FSX text ATIS:
Options->Settings->General->Air Traffic Control
Uncheck "Show message log in ATC menu"

Confirmed.  Thanks Richard.

It's not against any section of the CoC.

Thanks.  This opens a door for contact I hadn't thought was possible...  :D

I'm not sitting at my computer at the moment, but I'm pretty sure if you go under Settings and then Sound, you can turn the slider all the way down for Voices and that should take care of the problem.  It will not affect the volume of voices coming through your pilot client as that is completely separate.

Absolutely right!  The Voices part of the sounds controls this.  Bringing it down to 0 will have the desired effect.

However...  You will still be shown whatever ATIS is up in your text bar.

The Control Room Floor / Re: How do I listen to ATC as an observer?
« on: March 24, 2017, 08:25:50 PM »
To start listening to the frequency, click "RX" and "HDST" next to the entry you just created and you should hear whoever you want to listen to.

Ditto Josh's explanation. If you still cannot hear the frequency ensure that UDP Port 3290 is forwarded through your router for VRC.

Should be automatic, was for me. :)

While Daniel is correct, I'll admit that I never found it worth the time/effort to deselect my primary frequency tx...  No biggie to me if my pilots see me ask someone to contact me on my frequency.  In the RW, it's the same transmission they'd be hearing if they were "good pilots" and monitoring the guard frequency in one of their other COM radios..... ;)

I do it all the time... Unfortunately with not too great response rates.  I'd say around 1/4 pilots are on frequency when I do the call, unfortunately leading to the .contactme command.
When you say you "do it", do you mean attempt to hail pilots on your frequency, on unicom, or both?  If you mean your frequency, that's why I was suggesting unicom.  If your pilots don't respond to you on unicom, then the pilots are in violation of BOTH sections B3 and B7 of the Code of Conduct, and you are entirely within your right to contact a Supervisor (and/or use the .contactme crutch).  Whether you choose to do that or not is up to your facility policies and/or personal preference.

My steps:
  • Hail on Frequency
  • .contactme
  • Private Message
  • Wallop (If Necessary)

Isn't ATC participation on UNICOM against the CoC or is that something I've messed up?

I can't seem to figure out how to listen to other ATC's as an observer. Is there a certain frequency that I need? Can someone tell me how. My ARTCC is Indianapolis.

Odin,

As Josh so nicely said, you can just make an entry to your VRC Communications Panel like you would for anything else.  In terms of setting up, and learning VRC, I recommend you speak to a mentor or instructor at your facility.

The Flight Deck / Re: Cargo Flying
« on: March 17, 2017, 01:20:43 PM »
Greg,

While I myself am unfamiliar with South America and Asia, I am quite familiar with the airports of the great state of Alaska...

We have a lot of smaller, un-towered airports that for the most part are used by cargo aircraft, as you stated you were interested in.  We also have a few (cold war era/current) Air Force/Military bases that you can use, if you were interested in continuing that.  The total airspace is around 2 million square miles large, so it leaves room if you want to do cargo flights inside the state.  In addition, its proximity to Russia (Eurasia?) and Asia is very helpful as well for such flights.

Of course, I'm biased, but I'm inclined to think it's a viable recommendation.  Hope to see you in the skies soon. ;)
