The Flight Deck / Re: FS2020 C172 Garmin 530 NOT showing VOR Data
« on: October 30, 2020, 03:24:09 AM »
So in the gas gauge C172 default deluxe edition aircraft for FS2020, the Garmin 530 does not show the VOR data. The CDI has the signal, but the text for ID, TRK and DIST is not shown on the screen. I love this plane but without DME I cannot work on the P2 in this aircraft. (DME ARC). Am I crazy and missing a setting? Or is this feature INOP?

You can utilize an IFR approved GPS in lieu of DME equipment. Dial in the VOR you’re trying to arc off of, use the distance readout, and go forth.

Reference AC 90-108 and this nice (albeit old, because these rules changed in 1998) article from AOPA about it.

General Discussion / Re: Can i fly the cirrus vision sf50 on vatsim?
« on: December 22, 2018, 04:53:43 PM »
You can fly just about whatever you want on vatsim. Just make sure you’re proficient in your aircraft before you try flying into the middle of an event or something.

True airspeed (TAS) is the calibrated airspeed of the aircraft corrected for altitude and nonstandard temperature.

This covers step by step to get you to your ARTCC. Once you’ve selected your ARTCC, you should receive a welcome email from them outlining the next steps for that specific facility.

If you’re approaching top of descent, you can always request lower.

Only wished we had all the Heli ops that the DC area provides IRL!
LOL.  I'll also say that I was glad they let me take the RNAV RNP 19; I haven't flown the River Visual in so long I was sure I was going to make a you-know-what of myself if I tried it in the middle of an event, LOL.  The paths are so close to one another I figured it wouldn't be an issue.  Thanks guys!

Wasn’t an issue at all to put ya on the RNAV. Most pilots I know that fly into DCA on the river will go ahead and load the procedure and fly it anyway, because it pretty much mirrors the river. South ops VMC can get very interesting sometimes, but I’d have to say it was very smooth last night.

To put some facts and figures behind this discussion.  One hour before the Never Dull at Dulles event started (12/15/17 2230z-2330z) KIAD saw 4 departures and 2 arrivals.  From 12/15/17 2230z - 12/16/17 0400z,  KIAD handled 74 departures and 134 arrivals over 4.5 hours.  This equates to 46 operations per hour -- 10 times the Business as Usual traffic of 4.4 operations per hour!  From 12/16/17 0400z to 0500z (one hour after the event)  KIAD had 18 departures and 21 arrivals.  Two hours after the event end time (0500z-0600z) KIAD had 7 departures and 8 arrivals.  The data definitely supports what Don mentioned in a recent post about considering extending FNOs to 5 hours at least.  The issue is with staffing.  I would love to see data on the percentage of our membership who actually work events.  I can't imagine it being more that 10-15% of an ARTCCs roster.

And with this FNO, we had some controllers who were able to be flexible with their schedules, so we couldn’t make sure we had a cleanup crew of a center, 3-4 in the Potomac TRACON, and some scattered local controllers. These guys stayed on til 05z or a few minutes after to make sure we could serve as many pilots as we could.
