Events: Tell us your thoughts!
« on: September 13, 2018, 07:23:41 AM »
Good Morning from the VATUSA Events Department!

A lot of event work gets done behind the scenes between my office and the ARTCC's. Sometimes I forget that there is the rest of you all out there! I am reaching out to hear your comments/opinions/suggestions for VATUSA events.

Are the events monthly adequate to what you would like to see?
FNOs: Are the times working out so there is ATC online when you want to get in? or take off?
Is there certain types of events you would like to see more?

These above are just some quick questions I thought of, please ask ANYTHING you would like. I look forward to what the community has to say!

I've been pleased to see more events lately where two or more adjoining facilities partner up, and more than just a pair of focus airports are staffed up.  That fosters a higher level of regional traffic without it all being in a single-file line.  Despite all of the work & coordination that goes into creating & executing those, I hope that trend continues!

I've always been delighted to see a mix of commercial jet traffic with local GA traffic.  My perverse joy arises by having VFR or slow-mover IFR traffic (both at the primary airport and the satellites) integrated with the usual stream of jets.

Any event that encourages that sort of thing that gets my vote!

We should try and create more uncontrolled field events. I don't think i've seen too many facilities try this. For the time I was in ZDV, our Telluride overload event got quite popular. To enhance the pilot experience, we would have a CTAF frequency and a division approved ARTCC FSS. A lot of people enjoyed it as it was a nice change up from your normal events.

I flew the BWI event last night, and departing from KLGA to KBWI was flawless!. What ever you guys decided to do in the background, added sectors, etc. Worked!

Thanks

I can't speak for my friends and colleagues at ZDC who ran the Center and Approach sectors, but as your Tower controller at BWI, you're welcome!  ;-)

P.S. passed my S2 OTS as well ;-)

Reviving the thread.

I'd like to see real ops on the US side like they do in Europe, Asia, and South America. I'd love to see La Guardia packed like its rush hour but any field would work. It would be fun to fly a flight that's actually scheduled that day.

I loved the FNO in Boston whenever it was, and this Padres vs. Rockies is one I'm looking forward to, we should do more baseball themed events, maybe for the All-star Game, HR derby, Postseason the world series in particular, and it would be awesome if we could do another event in Boston

semi training events.

Hi, I know we pilots, unlike controllers, don't have to be certified (maybe a bad choice of phrase) to be on the vatsim network, and i know there are lots of training resources and tests (e.g. vatstar etc), but is there any scope for some events where the traffic is lower level and ATC have the ability to give constructive feedback to pilots.

I sometimes do something and think, ooops, i think i missed something there but ATC kindly tolerate my mistake, but I'd really like to be better. A difficult balance between 'amateur hour' and full on real ops, so maybe isn't possible. I sometimes think to PM the controller with a q but the last thing they want is for that to happen during a busy public event. Plus maybe they want to be controlling and not teaching!

I'll continue trying to improve the with training resources available, of which there are plenty; but i thought id put this thought out there.

Cheers,
Gez

I really liked the Vatventure event last week.  I'd love for VATSIM to make this the GA version of Cross The Pond.  Make it the second premiere event for the network.  It has such a huge potential to become something big on the network.

Got a suggestion for an event for next year. American Airlines operated the first commercial DC-3 service on June 26, 1936 between what was then called Newark Metropolitan Airport (now Liberty International) and Chicago Municipal Airport (now Midway). Would it be possible to arrange an event to recreate this exactly 85 years later using virtual DC-3s or similar vintage aircraft? Some operational allowance may be needed for non-RNAV aircraft and a suitable route entirely using conventional navigation.
