Events / Dateline Dash - Westbound 2016
« on: July 05, 2016, 12:45:11 PM »

VATJPN and the Anchorage ARTCC would like to present DATELINE DASH, Westbound 2016. Travel forward in time and cross the international dateline in this unique event. These routes are frequently flown by both cargo and passenger operators to help link Japan and Alaska to the rest of the world.

Depart from either Anchorage (PANC) or Fairbanks (PAFA) and arrive Tokyo Narita(RJAA) or Tokyo Haneda (RJTT). The Narita airport is located outside of the city of Tokyo and is the primary location for cargo operations. Haneda is in the heart of Tokyo and primarily serves as a convenient airport for passenger operations. The distance covered is roughly 2900 nautical miles, which should equate to a six-hour flight, if utilizing a jet aircraft.

The event begins Saturday November 5th, 2016 at 2300 Zulu. Depart between 2300 and 0100 Zulu and ATC will be provided for the duration of your flight. In local time, this would be 1500 AKST, 1900 EST on Saturday the 5th in the US. These local times are based on daylight savings before the time change occurs, giving you an extra hour of sleep:). For those beginning on the western side of the dateline (Asia), the event begins Sunday the 6th at 0800 JST.

Events / St. Paul Island, Alaska
« on: July 02, 2016, 04:42:08 AM »

Straight from the Deadliest Catch, the Anchorage ARTCC would like to present our St. Paul Island (PASN) event. The island sits in the middle of the Bering Sea and is a major support hub for the fishing industry in the area. Frequently featured on the Discovery Channel sitcom, the port services fishing vessels and is also major fish processing location. The weather is usually nasty, so it should be a good opportunity to practice those ILS skills. Short on time? Include St. George Island(PAPB) in your itinerary, which is just 35NM to the south.

Join us at the St. Paul Island airport for a fun evening on Wednesday September 21st, 2016 from 2345-0300 Zulu (1545 AKDT, 1945 EDT).

Events / Bring Santa Home
« on: July 02, 2016, 04:33:57 AM »

Once again the Anchorage ARTCC would like to present our annual Bring Santa Home event. This year was a little rough for Santa because there was an unusually high number of kids who fit into the “Nice” category. After a much needed vacation and New-year celebration, he is ready to get back to work at North Pole, which happens to be located just outside Fairbanks. Join us at Fairbanks International Airport (PAFA) on January 1st, 2017 from 2300-0300 Zulu (1400 Alaska, 1800 Eastern).

Please plan the below routes:

PANC-PAFA
       RV CAWIN LIBER2 (RNAV)
ANC8 BGQ V438 FAI (Non RNAV or low altitude - 10,000 min)

PAFA-PANC
       PUYVO2 PUYVO KROTO3 (RNAV)
MKNLY1 TKA TAGER8 (Non RNAV or low altitude - 10,000 min).

Other PAFA Arrivals: Please file RDFLG HRDNG2 or CAWIN LIBER2 STAR routes, if able.

Events / Kodiak Fish Fry
« on: June 20, 2016, 11:50:54 AM »

Join the Anchorage ARTCC for our Kodiak Fish Fry event. If history is any indicator, the weather will be cloud filled and windy. Come test your IFR skills with us on Wednesday, August 31st, 2016, from 2345-0245 Zulu (1545 Alaska, 1945 Eastern). Located about 220 NM south of Anchorage, the area provides great views of the surrounding mountainous terrain and the nearby ocean.

Radar coverage is limited, so we will make sure you don’t have a conflict with other aircraft but the cumulo granite is all on you. We timed the event so you can do an Anchorage round trip, if you want. Come join us for a fun and challenging evening.

Events / Arctic Entry LIVE
« on: May 22, 2016, 07:08:22 PM »

The Anchorage ARTCC is proud to announce our upcoming LIVE event, Arctic Entry Live. We will gather at the Lakehood Seaplane Base, which is directly adjacent to the Anchorage International Airport (PANC) on Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th of August 2017. The gathering will last two days, with live control on both of those days. Day one will consist of a Friday Night OPS event, while day two will be a cooperative event with one of our neighboring ARTCCs or FIRs.

This is not an exclusive event, we invite all members of VATUSA, VATCAN and VATSIM to join us. We will give all controllers in attendance the option of controlling within our airspace, up to their highest level of certification. We know Alaska is a long distance to travel just for a VATSIM event, so we have established the below website with information for various activities and adventures in the Anchorage area.

Simple Insanity / Re: New VATUSA Training System Announced
« on: April 01, 2016, 11:47:49 PM »
Alex, thank you for your comments.  Although I said I'd wait to consolidate before replying, I think it's important to understand the greater good here.  It is certainly not personal.  I think a lot of the team at ZAN, and didn't mean to imply in my original post that I didn't -- that was purely an oversight.  I should have mentioned that all current ZAN members who would like to remain with VATUSA may certainly do so; there is no requirement for the people to be transferred to VATCAN (although Matt is expecting that the majority will).  And I don't need Alaska's vast resources to make this Division successful, just good people and good training. :)

Thank you Don,

I can confirm I am expecting the majority of the new CZAN FIR to transfer divisions to VATCAN. We have already begun adding the CZAN areas to our website & Staff rosters.

Those controllers looking for a jump start on our systems, can watch the Canscope tutorials located here:

Kind Regards,

Matt Cianfarani
Director, VATCAN

I just finished learning vERAM, come on buddy....

Secede the Anchorage ARTCC to VATCAN's control, because let's face it, Alaska just sorta hangs off the side of Canadia anyway.... And since Alaska hangs off the side of Winnipeg, some of the NTU training will be done there, so it kinda stays in the family anyway.

I'm a little skeptical of the date you made this monumental announcement. You used ZAN as a bargaining chip:) Remember what happened to Russia when they sold Alaska to the US for 2 cents an acre? In the long run, the US made out on that deal. Remember that Don.....lol

Events / Cross the Bering
« on: February 17, 2016, 12:20:18 PM »

Join the Anchorage ARTCC and DAL Control for our international Cross the Bering event on Saturday, May 14th, 2016. The event will begin at 2100 EDT (1700 AKDT) and run 5 hours in length. The routing will be from Anchorage (PANC) to Anadyr (UHMA).

Anadyr is a small city that serves as the administrative center for the Chukotka region, Russia. As a port town it is also the closest city of population to it’s eastern neighbor of Alaska. In the last few years Anadyr has seen a revitalization that is slowly transforming the city into a vibrant and cultured destination. No Visa required, so load up on caviar and vodka because customs officials have the day off.

Routing:
        RNAV capable aircraft - FFITZ3 FFITZ J111 MCG H222 VALDA G212 LUNAD
Non RNAV or low altitude (10,000 minimum altitude) CMQ A1 FDV G212 LUNAD

A note about time. The event takes place on Sunday, May 15th from 0100-0600 Zulu. This is because of the time/date change necessary for the pilots and controllers in Russia. DAL Control (Russian) controllers will only be staffed from 0200-0600 Zulu because of the time zone issue.

Events / Valdez Fly-In
« on: February 03, 2016, 05:40:59 PM »

Come join the Anchorage ARTCC on Saturday March 19th for our Valdez fly-in event. Located about 90NM east of Anchorage International, Valdez (PAVD) is one of the most challenging airports in Alaska, so come test your IFR skills with us from 1800-2200 Zulu. It’s one way in, one way out, so don’t be surprised if a little holding is involved.

Valdez is a small town and was put on the map as the terminus of the Trans Alaska Pipeline. Here, oil is piped from the north slope of Alaska and loaded onto tanker ships, then transported out to various oil refineries. During the construction of the 800 mile pipeline, Valdez airport became a bustling destination necessitating a control tower. For this event, we will reopen the control tower to help things move smoothly.

All inbound IFR aircraft, plan on executing the full procedure (NO RADAR VECTORS) LDA/DME H or G approach. A published hold exists at the OLLEO intersection on both of these approaches, please be familiar because you may need to hold here for sequencing.

All outbound IFR aircraft, plan the JMAAL3.NAKED departure procedure.

Anchorage (PANC) Routings:

             PANC-PAVD       ANC8 NOEND OLLEO

             PAVD-PANC       JMAAL3 NAKED YESKA
