News / New Salt Lake ATM selected
« on: June 29, 2021, 08:47:12 PM »
First off, I want to give a giant thank you to Paul Biderman as the outgoing ATM. Paul and his staff have worked hard to build ZLC back up and they've done an outstanding job! Thank you Paul!

Next, join me on congratulating Nathan Bauer in becoming the next ZLC ATM. Nathan has been the DATM, as well as an Instructor, for 10 months now and has proven to be an important asset for ZLC. His experience as a professional airline pilot, as well as experience as a fire fighter, has given him the tools to succeed leading the ZLC ARTCC. I am looking forward to what the future holds for ZLC!

General Discussion / Re: Which UNICOM Frequency to Use
« on: May 29, 2021, 07:54:54 PM »
For now it is 122.80, but I think the plan is to have different frequencies as the CTAF frequency. If you login to my.vatsim.net and go to Vatsim AIP on the left, you can search up an airport and it might highlight a certain frequency to use as CTAF/Unicom. For now use 122.80, but in the future you may have to check the airport.

The Flight Deck / Re: "exit when able, taxi to the ramp on this frequency"

Or does it just mean taxiing at my discretion while still monitoring the same frequency?

This is what it means.

The Control Room Floor / Re: VATUSA Traffic Management Unit: Launch
« on: August 28, 2020, 01:16:30 PM »
Before I go through the replies, I do want to make a quick clarification on all of this:

None of what was in the slides is final - it was merely a first draft designed to get conversation going between staff members about how to attack this issue. Changes are always an option and feedback is highly encouraged to myself, my team, and the rest of USA staff. Like was said in the meeting last week - we are here to help you guys succeed in your event.
Can we expect for more meetings and Senior Staff input on this then? I know there was something recently, but I was under the impression it was for EC's to attend and I was told by the staff member we sent that it was more of a "this is how it's gonna go" thing and not a "what do you think" thing. Personally I think the TMU program is a great idea, but in the current form as described in the PDF it seems awfully convoluted and a little over bearing.

Waiting for ZLA to do their "(Fly) In-n-Out" event in response.
It will no doubt be a better event, much more flavorful  ;D

General Discussion / Re: Can it run P3D??
« on: July 01, 2020, 12:11:38 PM »
I think it really depends on what sort of performance you want. It will run but not very well, in my opinion, but my opinion of what is fine and acceptable may differ from yours. Since you don't seem worried about scenery I guess you could just turn down or off all the autogen and it would be "fine". The processor is slow and old, the memory is ok, and the GPU isn't made for gaming.

Events / Re: [23MAY20 2300Z-0300z] CALSCREAM XX 2020 (ZOA/ZLA)
« on: May 22, 2020, 02:08:37 PM »
If you have not booked a flight head over to https://calscream.com/ to book a flight. Remember, some flights enter you for a chance to win a prize!

===========================================
The event is just a day away but I wanted to make sure pilots are aware, Sacramento International (KSMF) has just changed its runway numbers from 34/16 to 35/17.

We have an update to the payware BluePrint Simulations scenery that will update these runways (FSX/ P3Dv1-v4), and we also have an update to a freeware scenery that we previously updated as well (FSX/ P3Dv1-4 by Mike Funk).

If you're flying to or from KSMF I suggest getting one of these options as they both have updated runways, terminal, and taxiway layout that all differs significantly from the default P3D/FSX offering. We also offer links to other freeware and pay options for many airports in ZOA airspace.

Events / Re: Definitely Not An FNO
« on: April 29, 2020, 08:15:15 AM »
We use GMT time in aviation.

The event times shown are in GMT.

The event starts at 2300 GMT on a Thursday, but ends at 0400 GMT on a Friday.

1 hour is done on a Thursday, 3 hours are done on a Friday.

This is in fact an event being held on a Friday, and thus an FNO.

« on: April 11, 2020, 10:03:25 AM »
If anybody, especially pilots, are upset about holding or delays, PHL had 3 straight hours over the real world arrival rate capacity. Expecting Vatsim controllers to manage MORE traffic than the real world, who is better trained and better equipped, is absurd. A while back we agreed that 65% of the real world rate is acceptable and should be what we can handle as Vatsim controllers, these guys managed over 35% more than that. If anything I think all of the controllers deserve kudos for doing what they could. If you're not ok with delays don't fly during an FNO.
