The Classroom (Controller Tips) / Re: Let's Talk VFR
« on: May 02, 2018, 09:16:32 PM »
This is most helpful. I find too often controllers have no idea how to handle VFR a Class D airport. Why am I getting a "clearance" when I'm departing VFR out of a D???

Thank you, Derek!

A key competency for pilots is situational awareness. Part of that means knowing where you are and what airspace you are in. Granted there is no mandatory pilot training. But, as pilots learn, knowing what center you’re in is a good start.

So, yes, I prefer a pilot call me first when he’s about 15-20 miles from my airspace boundary. When a pilot calls me first, I tend to believe he knows what he’s doing or is trying.
What I need to know: Callsign, altitude and location.

TRACON boundaries are much harder to find. But, there are notes on VFR charts that tell you who to contact when in the vicinity of Class B and C airports.

The Control Room Floor / Re: Metering on the Network
« on: March 17, 2018, 11:51:02 AM »
We like to use expectation management also. When we have a pilot or VA-organized event, we ask the coordinators to ensure pilots know that delays may be expected depending on traffic and weather conditions. We’re going to do our best, but you can only fit so many planes on a single route. Getting that relayed to the pilots helps clear up issues before they start.

To address pilots who disconnect and then pop up in the air: they’re going to get vectored out of the way. Sequencing a disconnect/pop-up aircraft into a existing stream in front of aircraft that waited their turn is providing a form of priority.
