The Control Room Floor / Sector File Data
« on: September 06, 2011, 04:19:59 PM »
It comes from numerous sources, many of which depend on the ARTCC. Some include enroute/Aerodome charts, FAA sources, FOIA requests, sites like airnav...depends on what resources you have access to and/or how much work you are willing to put into getting and converting various data formats.

Hi all, this is my first post: Can I know in advance the ATCs on line? thx for the kind replay

Welcome to the forums! There are numerous utilities available to see current available atc, such as servinfo, vatspy, vattastic, etc. To see scheduled or projectged atc coverage the only program I know of is the vRoute program. Some ARTCCs also have a tie-in to the same system, and have schedules posted on their websites, which can be found at the bottome of the VATUSA.net website.

Great find Jeff, and as with all software it is obviously user-beware. Some of the issues addressed in the post you referenced have been addressed, namely the ability of anyone using RW to transmit on a VVL server. Regardless of how you have setup your RW the VVL servers prohibit any connection from transmitting unless it comes from a VATSIM program (VRC, FSInn, etc).

I doubt that statement.
We all have experience with students who fail to request any sort of training (even when it has been made clear that they have to initiate it). In the end some people just want an ARTCC to hold them all the way through training, while others decide to take responsibility for training on themselves.

Wow, great info from 2 more-than-highly qualified individuals- Mr Seeley, you & Ken went above and beyond to explain some "basics" that'll keep me from stressing out the ATC and other pilots on the network!
Thank you both so much. The above info given was lacking "ego's" that others seem to have on VATSIM-as a medic firefighter in the real world I appreciate this more than you both know..thanks again for your time and knowledge

That explains why we understand each other, also an EMT/FF outside of "the hobby". As Tom said welcome to VATSIM, and we're always happy to answer questions!

Yes obviously I'm a "boot" as we title rookies on the fire dept!.
I'm in 2 flight schools here on VATSIM, 1 is in VATCAN, the other is at ZLA pilot school and I'm also in the midsts of the FS-X flight school 2011 edition and I can't find what I'm looking for. Can someone please help?
1) whats the max speed of a JET below 10,000 ft (US guidelines please)
2) A holding pattern in the US is commonly called "lline up and wait"-and the ATC calls this when it's peak load times-is this correct?
3)US flight levels start for VFR is 500 AGL?, IFR is 1,000 without worry of the terrain, and IFR is 2,000 AGL if flying in the mountains-is this correct or am I way off in left field here.

I just began this volunteer training (some of it-jets are new to me though) and I'm learning my way around VATSIM- so please foregive my ignorance...

1) Maximum speed unless otherwise indicated for safety is 250K below 10K. This is typically waived for larger military aircraft, and as mentioned, for safety considerations.

2) No, a holding pattern is just that, a pattern aircraft will follow when they are holding in the air. "Line up and Wait" is a phraseology term used to instruct an aircraft to line up on the runway, and hold position, or wait. (It replaced Position and Hold.)

3) Been too long, but "Flight Levels" indicate that it is starting at 18K MSL, and extending upward (below that is considered an altitude, not a flight level in the US).

A piece of advice for using RW, since the change to show who is transmitting you will need to do some adjustments after you click join. Copy the Address it joins you to, then click "Leave". Press join, and paste it back in with just the IP and channel (it adds "currently" to the end of the channel since the change). Once you have the IP address for your preferred server...you can also just change the channel section to match the controllers channel, instead of having to copy the whole thing again.

The Control Room Floor / Question
« on: December 01, 2010, 01:39:39 AM »
Hi Stephen,
You can find more information on becoming a controller on both the VATUSA and VATSIM main sites. However, to answer your question...no. Even if you possess the Deluxe FSX you can not use it to control. Controllers utilize 1 of 3 programs to do their job. These are ASRC (fading out), VRC (most US ARTCC's use this), and Euroscope (Popular in Europe regions, and some US facilities support it). Take a look around both the VATUSA site, and VATSIM on how to become a controller if you are interested, and you should find the info you need. If not let us know and we can point you in the right direction.

Unfortunately I don't believe there is any precedence to have the waiting period altered. Look at it this way, you have 7 whole days to study for the next attempt...so you should do great on it!

Purely tongue in cheek mate  We also border Oakland Oceanic, Edmonton, and a Russian sector that I won't attempt to pronounce/type. Indeed I think we've covered every possible facet of the discussion...all without name-calling or other shenanigans (amazing!). Until next time...

Agreed Harold, while it might be interesting to discuss ways around the "policy" for enroute controllers, I would be highly cautious actually contemplating having a controller non-certified to work my major jumping on my center. If he's that interested in working center, he can spend the few hours to check-out for major approach and then not have to constantly worry about whether he has someone on that airport so he can work center. After all, an approach is an approach, is an approach...by which I mean that before I want someone working center, they should be competent/comfortable enough to deal with the airports under them, including knowing applicable terrain and approaches that they need to begin their (the pilot's) descent on. In that light if they can work 1 approach, they should pick up local procedure for the major pretty quickly. And if they have that much trouble comprehending policies (or the tasks of a radar position), I really don't want them on an enroute sector, where they affect not only my traffic flows, but could also impact my neighbors (if we had any in AK ), and therefore the reputation of the entire ARTCC.

Welcome to the party Richard! So far the gist is why ZTL has their files a bit more locked down than (some) other ARTCC's, and it looks like it may be due to some bad info at some point in the past. No deals made yet, but I want to know when we can start having FAA Engineers do our files for us!

Why does it matter?

I would guess it was a question as to why any ARTCC would choose to lock down their files, and therefore potentially discourage new and/or old members from joining the airspace. Most people use the files to get a feel for what to expect in an ARTCC before they join, and with new members that is even more so. Also VATUSA/VATSIM highly encouraged new members to download the files for areas they are thinking about joining. But I guess that they are not interested in new members or generating interest from others on the network that could be potential visitors or transferring members.

Cheers!
