Good morning VATUSA!
As we finally get settled into 2025, I would like to go over what we’ve accomplished in 2024, the areas of opportunities, and what to expect in 2025 – 2026. I would also like to draw out a few staff changes at the division level.
2024
I mentioned in my 2023 address that 2024 would have two main objectives, development and stability. I feel we’ve collectively had extreme success in these two goals last year. Numerous staff hirings took place last year via the panel-style process – which is a proven success. This important hiring process is the reason why we’re in this position today. Thank you to the dedicated applicants and interviewers who have sat through hundreds of hours of panel-style interviews. This proves that we truly are on the same team and strive to ensure the success of our teammates.
Through this important vetting process, we have finally built a foundation of professionalism in the way we communicate on Discord, email, forums, and TeamSpeak. This took years to perfect and I'm happy that we’ve set the expectations for future leaders who have been hired in 2024. I appreciate those who set an example both in public and in private on a daily basis.
From there – we have been focused on the tasks that are much more desirable such as teaching, developing, rebuilding, rebranding, and stabilizing. Short-term projects such as social media team rebranding via pilot quality initiatives, Iron Mic, and top teachers have been part of the 2024 success. Long-term initiatives such as a new website, GCAP, event policy updates, and C3 recognition have been trucking along in the right direction which has also contributed to our 2024 success.
2025
Though there are countless amounts of back-patting, there will always be areas of opportunity. This year, we will build upon the momentum and success achieved in 2024, The Division plans to revisit and rehash the training demand and controller quality across all facilities, and work towards a solution for S1 – post academy training (if needed). Manpower will always be a pain point, therefore, a division – post academy - training solution will certainly be more than a light switch fix. These initiatives will require everyone’s input and help across the entire VATUSA. The mindset that we express of helping a neighboring ATM in a panel interview must be the same mindset behind moving us in the direction of creating better-centralized training expectations. Controller training is the backbone of the Division. The success we’ve had thus far sets us apart from other similar-sized divisions on the network; thank you to the volunteers who put in countless hours training the next generation of controllers.
Social media will be an important pillar this year as we dive into VATSIM’s new pilot quality initiatives. This VATUSA rebranded platform will trampoline basic pilot guides across VATUSA and the rest of the network. Thankfully, VATSIM has recognized the importance of and is currently working towards a long-term solution behind pilot quality. Again, like controller training, this isn’t a light switch fix. The Division – for now, via the social media team - will continue to be a part of the solution as we are all affected by pilot quality on a daily basis. ATOs are also a big discussion, especially in other AMAS divisions. This is something to chew on as we blast through 2025 and look towards 2026. Thank you to all the hardworking folks on the social media team for creating quality content every quarter. We will continue to expand this initiative this year and as we foster a larger viewership and recruit more talented individuals.
The VATUSA 501c3 is working to formalize itself better as subdivisions continue to utilize our non-profit status for live events, potential sponsorship, and infrastructure support. Thank you to all who have donated to VATUSA thus far. Expanding the Board of Directors and presenting a transparent accounting of donations will be long-term goals through the end of this year.
VATUSA Staff Changes
I’d like to finish by announcing some changes to the VATUSA staff and structure. These changes will help us continue our success this year and going into 2026. I appreciate the folks on my team who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure success on the front-end side of the operations.
Jon Owens has resigned from the Deputy Division Director - Training Services position. Jon has been an asset to us in multiple roles here at VATUSA. I can’t thank him enough for his hard work and dedication to this hobby throughout his 2 and a half years. Thank you, Jon.
Through tradition, the Deputy Director of Training Services or any deputy role will be appointed by the Division Director.
The Division has appointed Brin Brody as our new Deputy Director - Training Services. Brin has proven his worth tenfold. Throughout his tenure, he has acquired strong leadership skills from the USA training department by managing unique challenges that arise monthly. He puts in countless hours each week answering a plethora of training and RCE ticketed questions while balancing probationary instructors and promotions across the entire USA. Brin has some big ideas, and I am excited to see the continued and revised initiatives he will bring into his new role.
As mentioned, we’ve found ourselves in a unique situation regarding staff development. In a perfect world and if the hiring processes are done correctly, staff development takes its natural course. Our expectations and foundation are already set, the hiring panel has proven its worth, and the correct folks are hired for the correct positions. The USA Staff Development Manager (USA7), therefore, has little work to accomplish for good reason! With the aforementioned success, the Division has decided to reposition the Staff Development Manager role for the long-term future.
Joseph Kerr “JT”, who previously led our staff development initiatives, has proven his dedication to this community. With his knowledge, JT was the Division’s jack of all trades. We’ve needed JT in some rough times - rebuilding facilities and having someone conduct difficult conversations with staff, pilots, and controllers. Thank you, JT, for your behind-the-scenes dedication. Even though he will be leaving the USA Staff, JT maintains an open-door mindset; please do not hesitate to reach out to him for help or advice. Thank you, Joe.
The USA7 position will be transitioned and renamed to the Social Media Manager. The Division has decided to appoint Jason Calder to the USA7 position.
Jason has proven successful in re-building the once inactive (years ago) social media initiative into the thriving team it is today. He’s found much-needed talent across the Division, organized these talented folks, and released some quality content recognized by VATSIM and other divisions - showcased at Flight Sim Expo. Jason has grown and learned a lot throughout 2024; he’s more than ready and confident with the next steps/demands of what's to come. I am confident and excited about where he plans to bring the social media team. Jason and his dedicated team will be an important resource as VATSIM continues to push forward with pilot quality initiatives.
These staff changes will take some time while folks transition in and out of their respective roles. We will do our best to communicate a point of contact during this transition. Once the dust settles, documentation will be updated to reflect the above changes.
For 2025, let us not forget the fragile foundation that we currently - successfully - operate on. It has been a challenging build, to say the least; thank you all! Let's continue to maintain the basics – it's working! Areas of opportunity - we must also continue to look at ways to improve the current status quo, “embrace growth and aim to positively influence the entire network”.
