Events / Re: [09JAN 2000-2300 ET] BVA Challenge: VFR Cross Country
« on: January 09, 2019, 11:51:35 AM »
Hello,
I have a question about this sentence from the linked event briefing:

Quote
Pilots may be told to remain clear of the Boston Class B airspace and are not guaranteed to receive a clearance through the Norwood or Hanscom Class D airspace. This means that aircraft may have to alter their route to avoid the airspace or descend early to avoid it.

I have done a number of PRP flights from BVARTCC, and I'm confused about the clearance situation -- in PRP VFR#4, I learned that ATC clearance is not required for C and D airspace, only "contact" with them.  Is it true then from the event briefing that you could be "denied clearance" through Norwood/Hanscom class D?

Technically, you need two way radio communications for a C and D. So the way an ATC will "deny" you service is by simply replying "Stand By". Unless they state their callsign and your callsign, two way radio communications have not been established. An example of 2 way radio comms would be if you called up and got this response: "N12345, Providence Approach, roger". However if ATC simply says "Last aircraft calling, standby" means that you cannot enter the class C or D airspace.

You can also take out your cellphone and call the real world ATIS :)

Yup, taking a trip to http://airnav.com and searching for the airport will actually give you a phone number for the D-ATIS for most airports. If that doesn't work, you can also use LiveATC.

I agree Chris. Especially with the inter-ARTCC communication, I think the division would be a much better place if SOPs, LOAs, Sector Files, etc was public, at least to division members. I also would like to see guys from other ARTCCs just to be able to poke their head into other ARTCCs and have a nice chat once in a while. It feels like we are all cooped up in our own ARTCCs and often forget that this is a community. Same with training standards. If we made more homologous training standards and material, it would prevent the constant (ZXX is a cert factory, ZXX is way too difficult, etc.) I hope that some day this becomes a reality and I'm able to simply go into another ARTCCs pubs and figure out who I need to handoff to. Or better yet, just ask them in their teamspeak! Just my $0.02

General Discussion / Re: Improper use of airline callsign?
« on: November 20, 2017, 08:47:53 AM »
I mean first of all, my flight school uses the callsign AVL (SkyVentures). And we file as AVL### depending on which airplane we are flying. Most of them are Cessnas, so I really don't see why the controller should care about this..
