General Discussion / Happy Holidays!
« on: December 24, 2015, 09:17:33 AM »
It’s that time of year again...  Too much food, too much egg nog and too much of that Aunt we don’t talk about.  Just enough time has passed to forget what she did at Thanksgiving....

I'd like to share with you an old aviation tome that puts a smile onto my face every year when I read it.

You have my sincerest and best wishes for a very safe, healthy, blessed and happy holiday season!

A retelling of the 19th-century story, especially for aviators.
This has been floating around the Internet for years in various forms -- and probably was passed around as photocopies for years before that.

'Twas the night before Christmas, and out on the ramp,
Not an airplane was stirring, not even a Champ.
The aircraft were fastened to tie downs with care,
In hopes that -- come morning -- they all would be there.

The fuel trucks were nestled, all snug in their spots,
With gusts from two-forty at 39 knots.
I slumped at the fuel desk, now finally caught up,
And settled down comfortably, resting my butt.

When the radio lit up with noise and with chatter,
I turned up the scanner to see what was the matter.
A voice clearly heard over static and snow,
Called for clearance to land at the airport below.

He barked his transmission so lively and quick,
I'd have sworn that the call sign he used was "St. Nick."
I ran to the panel to turn up the lights,
The better to welcome this magical flight.

He called his position, no room for denial,
"St. Nicholas One, turnin' left onto final."
And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a Rutan-built sleigh, with eight Rotax Reindeer!

With vectors to final, down the glideslope he came,
As he passed all fixes, he called them by name:
"Now Ringo! Now Tolga! Now Trini and Bacun!
On Comet! On Cupid!" What pills was he takin'?

While controllers were sittin', and scratchin' their heads,
They phoned to my office, and I heard it with dread,
The message they left was both urgent and dour:
"When Santa pulls in, have him please call the tower."

He landed like silk, with the sled runners sparking,
Then I heard, "Left at Charlie," and "Taxi to parking."
He slowed to a taxi, turned off of three-oh,
And stopped on the ramp with a "Ho, ho-ho-ho..."

He stepped out of the sleigh, but before he could talk,
I ran out to meet him with my best set of chocks.
His red helmet and goggles were covered with frost,
And his beard was all blackened from Reindeer exhaust.

His breath smelled like peppermint, gone slightly stale,
And he puffed on a pipe, but he didn't inhale.
His cheeks were all rosy and jiggled like jelly,
His boots were as black as a cropduster's belly.

He was chubby and plump, in his suit of bright red,
And he asked me to "fill it, with hundred low-lead."
He came dashing in from the snow-covered pump,
I knew he was anxious for drainin' the sump.

I spoke not a word, but went straight to my work,
And I filled up the sleigh, but I spilled like a jerk.
He came out of the restroom, and sighed in relief,
Then he picked up a phone for a Flight Service brief.

And I thought as he silently scribed in his log,
These reindeer could land in an eighth-mile fog.
He completed his pre-flight, from the front to the rear,
Then he put on his headset, and I heard him yell, "Clear!"

And laying a finger on his push-to-talk,
He called up the tower for clearance and squawk.
"Take taxiway Charlie, the southbound direction,
Turn right three-two-zero at pilot's discretion"

He sped down the runway, the best of the best,
"Your traffic's a Grumman, inbound from the west."
Then I heard him proclaim, as he climbed thru the night,
"Merry Christmas to all! I have traffic in sight."

News / Ric Ruminski announces his retirement
« on: December 23, 2015, 12:42:52 AM »
Normally I'd ask my Division Communications Manager to make a VATUSA HQ retirement announcement, but this one seemed much more appropriate to come from me....  ;)

With a long, successful career under his belt, both in the professional world, as well as in the VATUSA world, Ric Ruminski, VATUSA Division Communications Manager, has announced his retirement both professionally and from the VATUSA HQ Staff.  Ric will see us through to the end of the year, but then is planning to enjoy his retirement -- The Golden Years -- by traveling and visiting family and friends.

Ric has been active with VATSIM for nearly 12 years, served as a controller in both ZMA and ZAN, and has served in his current role on the VATUSA staff for nearly 10 years.  As such, he has served 5 different Division Directors successfully during 6 terms, and has been the longest-serving member of the VATUSA Staff.  I have personally appreciated the continuity that Ric brought to the HQ Staff over the years, his wise counsel, and the willingness to immediately support each and every request that was made of him and his utter professionalism in carrying out his duties.

Please join me in raising your glasses and toasting Ric for a successful career professionally, his long-term success within VATUSA, and most importantly, wishing him health and many years of enjoyment to come!

Events / VATUSA Town Hall Meeting
« on: December 22, 2015, 08:49:27 AM »
VATUSA is pleased to announce a Town Hall meeting, Thursday 14 Jan at 9:30pm EST, 8:30pm CST, 7:30pm MST, 6:30pm PST, 5:30pm AKST, 4:30pm HST, 15 Jan at 0230Z, etc. -- pick your favorite time zone. :)

A suggestion was made after the Kyle Ramsey Town Hall Meet and Greet a couple of months ago that VATUSA should host a similar type of meeting.  Don Desfosse, VATUSA Division Director, will host a brief discussion highlighting some recent VATUSA highlights, projects, challenges and opportunities, turn the mic over to various VATUSA staff members to add a little color, and then open the forum for general conversation, questions and answers.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time we've ever tried this in VATUSA, at least in the 8 years that I've been a member.  Like any new undertaking, I figure it can't (or shouldn't :) ) hurt to try it out and see if it's a good thing to do once in a while.

Of course, with approximately 17,500 active members in VATUSA, there is no one day and time that will be perfect for everyone; if the meeting is a success and something we want to try again in the future, we'll do our best to rotate days and times to give everyone an opportunity to participate.

The meeting will take place in the VATUSA Teamspeak server.  The following credentials will be in place shortly prior to the meeting.

The TeamSpeak server address is: ts.vatusa.net:9989
Password:  townhall
Please use your full name and facility (e.g. John Doe - ZXX) in the nickname login line.

Meeting will be held in the Archie W. League Conference Room.  If you're a minute or two early and don't know who Archie W. League is, read the description on the right side of the page.

Hope to see lots of folks there!

General Discussion / Happy Thanksgiving!
« on: November 26, 2015, 09:02:10 AM »
For those of you who celebrate it as a holiday, and also for those that don't, I'd like us all to take a moment to give thanks.

I'd like to give thanks...

... to our families.
... to those that have in the past, those that do now, and those that will in the future, keep us safe from harm's way.
... for being as fortunate as we are. If we have a computer and high speed internet access, we are doing so much better than so many in this world who struggle to keep a roof over their heads and food in their mouths.
... for those that share peace and love in this world.
... for those that have brought, and continue to bring us VATSIM, free of charge to us (even though they pay a considerable amount every year for our enjoyment).
... for being part of such a wonderful team as we have within VATUSA. We ebb and flow, and get stronger and weaker over time, but we are generally made up of a great group of people and come together as a strong and wonderful family.

I would also like to thank each and every one of you, the members of VATUSA, especially the staff, for what you do for the network every day.  We wouldn't be here or have a purpose without you.  For many, this is a hobby, perhaps one of many that you engage in.  For many others, particularly the training staffs, ARTCC staffs, and the VATUSA staff, your motivation and dedication to the hobby transcends the normal; you devote an important part of who you are for the success of the members and the network.  For that, I applaud you, and am deeply grateful.

May the turkeys you see at your Thanksgiving celebrations be only the ones you eat, not the ones you share a meal with.

More importantly, may we all be thankful, grateful, loving and sharing, and may we all have a safe, healthy and Happy Thanksgiving.

NOTAMs / Updated VATUSA Policies
« on: October 31, 2015, 09:21:43 PM »
Well, I finally got around to #38 on my "to-do" list.....

After 6-8 years of the old ones being in existence, VATUSA is happy to announce the release of updated General and Visiting/Transferring Controller policies.  They can, of course, be found on the VATUSA Home Page under VATUSA HQ > Policies.  Drafts were reviewed by the VATUSA HQ Staff as well as ATMs/DATMs, and inputs received/adjudicated.  There were not major, wholesale changes; mainly just clarifications and updates based largely upon input received over the last few years, as well as feedback received during the review process.  That said, a brief description of the changes is included on the front page of each.

General Discussion / VATSIM Meet up in Iceland June 2016
« on: October 31, 2015, 11:26:37 AM »
All,

I am very happy to pass on a very nice personal invitation from Wygene Chong, Director of VATSIM Reykjavik FIR, for all VATUSA members who are able to join in a real world VATSIM meet up in Iceland, June 2016.

Quote
I would like to invite members of VATUSA and VATCAN to a real world Iceland Meet-Up in June 2016.

Brochure: http://vatsim-scandinavia.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Iceland-Meet-Up-2016.pdf

VATSIM Scandinavia forum: http://forum.vatsim-scandinavia.org/topic/42-iceland-real-world-meet-up-12-14th-june-2016/

The VATSIM Scandinavia forums use SSO login so any VATSIM member can log into our forums and post in that planning thread. We encourage all VATSIM members who have the time, money and interest to come along to Iceland for what will surely be an enjoyable few days. I appreciate of course that Iceland is further away from North America than it is from Europe, but believe it is still within range for some members, especially those already planning a holiday in Europe.

The official list of persons attending is being organised in that VATSIM Scandinavia forum thread, and I am happy to answer any questions you might have by email or in that forum.

Best regards,

Wygene Chong

Events / Enroute Support Needed for CTP Eh!
« on: October 13, 2015, 09:39:39 AM »
The CTP committee has put out a request for assistance needing Enroute CTP support in Canada.  Specifically, Moncton FIR for certain, and likely Montreal FIR as well.

Support needed Sat 24 Oct 2015 from approx 0730Z to approximately 1600-1700Z.

This is a great opportunity for our Enroute controllers to work arguably VATSIM's flagship, pinnacle event!  Besides, how many folks homeroomed in ZSE, ZOA, ZLA, ZLC, ZJX, etc. can say they've taken 40 handoffs an hour for 6+ hours from Boston, New York, Cleveland, etc.!

Need is likely for 8+ controllers, more if folks are available only for partial-shift.

If available, please email John Cierpial at [email protected], copy to USA5 and USA1.

ARTCC Staff -- please spread the word!

Thanks, everyone, I personally appreciate your support of this crucial need for VATSIM's flagship event!

General Discussion / RW: Goodbye, Flight Watch
« on: September 24, 2015, 04:46:49 PM »
The FAA has discontinued the Enroute Weather Advisory Service, nicknamed "Flight Watch" (frequency 122.00), effective today.  I used it several times.  Not a lot, but it was nice to have it there when you needed it.  So being the crusty old fart pilot that I am, I'll say that I'll miss it.  Goodbye, Flight Watch, thanks for all the help you've provided me and every other pilot who needed the service.

Quote from: Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA)
Flight Watch frequency end date changed to Sept. 24
August 31, 2015
By Dan Namowitz

The FAA will discontinue the use of the dedicated Flight Watch radio frequency 122.0 MHz on Sept.24, a week earlier than the previously announced end date for the En Route Flight Advisory Service (EFAS) frequency.

The FAA changed the implementation date to Sept. 24 from Oct. 1 because all necessary preparations will be completed earlier than planned, it said.

Services provided by EFAS will continue to be offered over published Flight Service frequencies and on 122.2 MHz, the universal frequency for contacting Flight Service.

After its discontinuation, 122.0 MHz will be monitored for six months so pilots may be directed to other frequencies appropriate for their flight.

The FAA will publish a notam advising of the new end date. The agency also will send out a FAAST Blast email message on Sept. 9, and update the FAA website to announce the change, said Rune Duke, AOPA director of government affairs for airspace and air traffic.

AOPA reported Aug. 18 that the FAA had decided to discontinue 122.0 MHz as increasing numbers of pilots switch from traditional Flight Service assistance to more automated and Web-based information sources.

The change will give the agency an opportunity to eliminate redundancies and reduce underutilized services, and resolve issues of bleed-over and frequency congestion on 122.0 MHz, the FAA said.

AOPA has worked to make pilots aware of the transition, and to assure that satisfactory levels of service continue on the other frequencies.

Events / ZBW Regional Circuit [22 Sep 8-11pm EDT (2359-0300Z)]
« on: September 22, 2015, 04:13:55 PM »

Location: Bangor (KBGR) and Burlington (KBTV)

In the Regional Circuit, controllers fully staff two airports, providing complete 'gate-to-gate' coverage over the three-hour event. The focus airports are typically 80-200nm apart, and a high volume of pilots operating in this compressed airspace means the Regional Circuit provides optimal conditions for congested frequencies and busy airways.

During the event, pilots are encouraged to fly between both airports, completing the return flight when time allows. Preferred routes are provided to expedite traffic flow into and out of congested approach airspaces. With controller-to-controller handoffs happening each time you pass through a sector, there is nothing more immersive in our event lineup than a busy Regional Circuit.
