General Discussion / Re: ATC Coverage Times
« on: March 16, 2017, 10:57:36 PM »
Some facilities (I believe ZLA is another) encourage controllers to (on a voluntary basis) post their expected availability. For us in BVA, you can find that here: http://www.bvartcc.com/Pilots/ATCTimetable.aspx.

There are many different opinions within VATUSA as to the value of such tools, some of which you have seen on this thread. However, when I fly on the network, I would always appreciate being able to know (within reason) when controllers plan to stick around until. I can entirely appreciate that real life happens and plans change; I sometimes have to change my start/end times after I get online. But, as a general rule, I try to post my availability as I know about it, so those who do appreciate knowing have an option to.

The first one:

Addition of time-based separation requirements behind B757 aircraft
05/12/2016
FAA JO 7110.65 3-9-6, 3-9-7, 5-5-4
FAA N JO 7110.712 (http://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Notice/N_JO_7110.712_Same_Runway_Separation.pdf)

Has been superceded (or least modified).

In the 7110.65W, they eliminated wake turbulence separation for heavy and large aircraft behind the B757, reduced the separation for a small behind B757 to 4 miles, and changed the same runway separation requirement for a small behind a B757 from “the same runway or parallel runways separated by 2,500’ or less” to “the same runway”.

Apparently they didn’t realize at the time that the analysis done to support this change was developed using parallel runways separated by 700’ or more, not the same runway. As a result, they are modifying the change back to say that parallel runways separated by less than 700’ be treated as the same runway when a small aircraft departs behind a B757.

Confused? Welcome to wake turbulence…

Hi Tyler, welcome!

vPilot is the "go to" client for FSX-based platforms (FSX:SE, Prepar3D, and FSX). I don't have any experience with the other clients but would recommend trying to find a way to get vPilot working for you -- if that's at all possible.

Yes!

Presumably you're using FSX, FSX:SE, or Prepar3D...the instructions do vary a little depending on the platform. However, if you are in FSX or FSX:SE, Options > Settings > General will give you a screen with a "pause on task switch" checkbox. Turn that off, and you should be all set.

I offer this as a suggestion:

You're welcome  :P

Wow, what an expertly-written set of aliases for PDC/CPDLC. I really like that ".route" alias. I wonder where you got it from...must have been a facility with a great FE.

General Discussion / Re: Mouse VS Joystick

Totally agree! The joystick or (personally) yoke definitely adds a major element of realism to online flying. I definitely wouldn't recommend anything other than that.

General Discussion / Re: VATSIM Meet up in Iceland June 2016
« on: March 01, 2016, 10:19:55 PM »
Wygene,

We obviously weren't thinking about being coordinated...but if we are both doing events in the future, I'll note FlightSimCon has historically (for the past 3 years) been held around the same time. This year, it's June 11-12, 2016 so unfortunately there's some overlap.

Just thought I'd mention it in case a meet-up in Iceland is happening again in the future.

All the best with your event! These meet-ups are a ton of fun. Hopefully a few of you will be able to fly and participate remotely (but together) in the FlightSimCon ATC on the 12th.

General Discussion / Re: Teamspeak

If you are a controller/member of an ARTCC, you should be able to join that ARTCCs TeamSpeak server. To my knowledge, there aren't any ARTCCs that don't offer controllers some form of communication outside of VRC.

The Control Room Floor / Re: Pre Departure Clearances
« on: January 17, 2016, 01:46:04 AM »
Here in ZBW, we train controllers operating at PDC airports to send the PDC immediately upon filing of the flight plan (it's still optional, so not everyone does it this way). Personally, as soon as I see someone file out of KBOS, they get the PDC. My expectation is that they call me with code, SID, etc. when they are ready to push/taxi.

We also have an SOP that requires any flight plan amendments to be done via voice. When it's busy, we allow controllers to text the revised route and voice-clear the pilot "as amended".

It's reasonably impressive of the FAA to require a new form that doesn't have options for DVFR or SFRA flight plans to be in use before its own documentation (AIM) is updated to meet it. BZ.

Hopefully they'll use the extra year to come out with some clarity around how the ICAO flight plan will actually work (and about questions like what will happen to our beloved equipment suffixes).
