General Discussion / Re: Changes to FNOs for the time being
« on: April 11, 2020, 08:21:30 AM »
Hot take: lets just get rid of FNO. I've been on this network for a long time and the story is always the same, some FNO got jacked up, people are mad, how do we fix it, we don't, rinse and repeat. We bang the same drum every so often and nothing fixes it, what's the point? We've done regional FNO's, we've had crossfires, here we still are, it's not a solution. Either accept that these events draw a lot of traffic and something bad is bound to happen or get rid of it. It's that simple. Until we have the right traffic management tools and policies, and dare I say training, FNO will always be an unorganized free for all that leaves somebody with their panties in a twist.

The Control Room Floor / Re: Direct Requests
« on: March 30, 2020, 08:17:23 PM »
Today S56 gave my flight to MCI direct PWE. Not sure what coordination was involved, if any, but thought it was interesting to see as I was browsing this thread. That goes across ZLC, ZDV, and a chunk of ZMP.

I personally only ever give a direct to something on the border of my airspace, or the transition to the STAR if they're arriving in a neighboring ARTCC. I only coordinate when it's busy and I don't want to cause problems.

Any recommended/preferred scenery for SJC in P3D since they're both a bit older

We will have coverage for those who wish to fly the SFO - FAT/RNO routes, but delays would be likely I suggest flying out of SJC as our resources will be more pointed towards event facilities.

I want to clarify this for all pilots, SFO is not part of this event and thus will have extremely limited staffing. All pilots can expect delays that could be significant if trying to fly to or from SFO, depending on traffic levels. We highly suggest you fly to or from one of our event airports (SJC/RNO/FAT).

Thanks for your understanding

General Discussion / Re: Event Times
« on: March 01, 2020, 04:57:41 PM »
I think starting an FNO a little earlier/ later depending on time zone might actually help with the traffic congestion problems we see at those events. Yeah it probably precludes some from flying, but given the madhouse that is an FNO that might not be a bad thing. I'm not a fan of the nasty grams I get because somebody had to hold in the air or on the ground. For other events, there isn't much reason to start them all at 2359z, I think it would be nice to see more morning and midday events on the weekends.

The Classroom (Controller Tips) / Re: VATUSA Refresher Class - Approach
« on: December 16, 2019, 09:35:31 PM »
Just a note for everyone, this is going to be our first time using Google Meet so please bare with us. It lacks the flexibility of our previous system, Zoom.
We will have zoom ready in case we encounter issues, but as it only provides for 40 minute meeting lengths we may need to get a little creative.

Have you considered Discord? You can "Go Live" in a server voice channel and share your screen. We used this with a ZOA meeting recently and it worked out alright.

General Discussion / Re: Can it run P3D??
« on: November 13, 2019, 07:06:24 PM »
You can't compare a desktop SKU to a mobile SKU, just because it is a Ryzen 7 doesn't mean the performance will match. The 3750H is a quad core chip with a 35W TDP, versus a 2700X which is an 8 core chip with a 105W TDP. PassMark shows the 2700X having nearly double the score of a 3750H. The good news is P3D still loves single threaded performance, and the PassMark bench puts the 3750H in range of a 2700X. I'd say this laptop would work at low-medium settings provided you can keep it cool and it doesn't start to throttle. I'd highly recommend a desktop with a better CPU in it, but if you just have to have a laptop, this would work...in theory anyway.

I think the slide might be worded poorly, but basically it works like this...

In the first paragraph I think they are talking about the visibility out the window, known as prevailing visibility and sometimes minimum visibility. This is how far you can see from the reporting point. We measure that in Statue Miles and it appears in both a METAR and a TAF. In the above example it is reporting that you can see 10SM from the reporting point on the field.

It doesn't seem to mention RVR at all, but just know that during bad weather you will see something like R01L/0600V1000FT which is giving you the RVR for the specified runway. I'm not sure if RVR is in the purview of that lesson so I won't get too into it, but just be aware it is a thing and hopefully you'll learn about that later on in training.

The second paragraph I think is referring to the sky conditions. In the above METAR example it is reporting few clouds at 700 AGL, scattered 2,200 AGL, and scattered 3,500 AGL. I am not sure why it says MSL, but a METAR and TAF report AGL.

The last blurb is about vertical visibility, also known as indefinite ceiling (VV) and is reported in hundreds of feet. So VV002 is 200 feet.

Hope that helps!

News / Re: TMU Maps for VATUSA Facilities
« on: July 19, 2019, 04:19:35 PM »
Speaking of TMU maps....I can't modify the ZOA maps and the website is calling me Dave.  ;D Are we no longer using these or is this some sort of bug?

Seems like something on the site broke...I assigned an exam last night, and it called me Dave with that error message, but still assigned the exam..then told the student the same thing when he submitted it, but still submitted it..

Funny, after reading this is sounds like there is an issue with the site, so I tried to submit a formal ticket and.....I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Blake pls halp
