Wally, glad you are willing to dive and in take the bull by the horns after waiting so long. I would recommend (if you haven't already) that you review the Pilot materials at vatsim.net on how to fly on the network (I do not mean to imply in any way that you seem to need them, just most people forget to look over them when they start and can miss quite a bit of useful information. You will find most ARTCCs have the best staffing between 1800 (6pm) and 2200 (10pm) in their local time, with far more ATC coverage on the weekends than through the week. For instance, the best time to catch NY, Atlanta, Miami, etc would probably be in the evening (Eastern Time). You can use a program like VATSPY, ServInfo, etc, or go to http://vattastic.com/ to see the information in your web browser. If you let us know what time you are trying to find ATC (and in what time zone you are in) more specific information can probably be given.

Heck, in Alaska we'll just settle for the right airport most of the time. Heaven forbid we ask them to land on the runway (or the right one )

The Flight Deck / yet another new pilot question
« on: January 02, 2012, 07:03:51 PM »
Hi Skyler, glad you are asking questions instead of blundering through blind! Let me try to answer a couple. The first, about who to contact, is pretty simple. On VATSIM we use a top-down model where each position is responsible for everything below it when they are not staffed. In the case of no ATC available though, you would simply follow the CoC and monitor (does not mean transmit every 3 seconds) 122.80 on text (the VATSIM UNICOM frequency). If a controller logs on you may contact them, or they will send you a contactme request via PM if needed.

As for VFR clearances, if you are flying VFR then yes, you would do well to be in possession of the sectional charts. You would also be responsible for calling the controlling position prior to entering the airspace in that case. If, however, you are flying an IFR flight then no need to call for Class B clearance, etc...as full services are already being provided as an IFR aircraft.

Hope that clears up those two issues, for more information (if you haven't already), I recommend a thorough read though the VATSIM Pilot Resource Center (available on the VATSIM.net website). Keep on learning, and welcome to the virtual skies!

I think I've heard this one somewhere before. Always love reading it!

I think it comes up every year at this time...as you said though it's quite amusing.

Congratulations to ZAN's own Nathan Tilley on his recent selection for Event Coordinator, in addition to his duties as Staff Mentor. Well done to the other applicants, and I'm sure we can expect fantastic work in the near future!

I suggest you start at http://www.vatusa.net/join.php, which should progress you through the initial process. As to the sector files for VRC, you can find them on most ARTCC websites (the exception is Atlanta, which requires registration to access them). Once you have completed your Basic ATC exam and selected a facility to train at you should receive more information on how to continue training.
