The Control Room Floor / Re: Trying to find a home.

Jonathon,

First off welcome to the dark side! We can all tell you why you should join each ARTCC, but it only comes down to what you want. If I were you, I would go some place that interests you. A lot of people control in the ARTCC they live, but it is up to you. Personally, I chose Atlanta because I grew up in Atlanta and I wanted to work my "home airport". It had nothing to do with the fact it is the busiest airport in the world and 3rd in VATUSA, 8th on VATSIM. (Sorry, Had to throw some advertisement in:)

I would also recommend joining an ARTCC in your same time zone, as it would be easier to get training scheduled with mentors/instructors. Again, I can't stress enough that it is your decision and whichever ARTCC you decide to join, will be fun and enjoyable.

Everything stated above is some pretty good advice. Personally, I can't tell you when I am going to get on nor how long I will be on for. Sometimes I am in the mood to control and sometimes I am not. Even when I am in the mood to control, I can't tell you how long I will be on. I may be on 1 hours or I may be on 4, it all depends on what I have going on in my life, traffic levels, quality of pilots,  time of day etc. It is because of this reason where I can't publish my expected log off time and I can't answer that when I get asked.

Hope this helps.

I think your ATM would agree that one way Atlanta should not be represented (along with any other ARTCC or VATSIM subset) is through profanity on a public forum, especially when it's coupled with an attitude.

Actually, do not agree. Why? Because it shows willingness to not back down and willingness to stand up for himself and for the ARTCC. Is there some things I would have said differently or omitted? Yes, but I still think we need to stand up for both ourselves and our ARTCC, thus my tolerance of the messages.

Although, I do mind when people assume or make inferences about me, that is when I get irritated.

Mr. Kosmoski,

What I, nor the Events Coordinator appreciate, is informing us we should correct the name of our event because it does not fit the criteria you are used to seeing or you would like to see. Let's look at this quote from earlier in the discussion:  "If we're not allowed to question things, what are we doing here in the first place?  Most things aren't questioned until somebody bothers to ask the question."

If you want to continue to ask questions about banners, event names, or other irrelevant information regarding events, in the future, I would consider taking a different approach to raising such questions, as you can clearly see the current approach was not received well.

Each ARTCC has different reasons for putting names for their events which may not be known to someone who is not within the ARTCC. I believe this entire thread is could have been avoided if the name of ZTL's, not Mr. Kosmoski's, event was accepted as something to which will not change. With those final remarks, I am going to conclude this discussion here. If it were to continue, I do not see any good coming from it. Matthew, if you wish to discuss further, please feel free to send me an email, and I will get to it when I have time.

See you Friday.

Hopefully this will be able to clarify, as apparently the description already provided isn't sufficient.

It has been a tradition in the ARTCC to not call our event "Real Ops" or something to the effect. We have called our events Atlanta Live! and Charlotte Live! for years now, and this is the first time it has been questioned. Why? Because it doesn't go with what other ARTCC's are doing.

As explained in the description, we are aiming to simulate how much we can bring the ARTCC and the airspace surrounding the featured airport to "Life". For other ARTCC's, Live means meeting up and controlling in one room together. To Atlanta Center controllers it means something completely different, thus in the future, we will still be calling these events Atlanta Live! or Charlotte Live!

I hope this clarifies the issue a little better.  I do want to apologize to anyone who gets offended by this post, but we all have better things to be doing rather than critiquing a name for a simple event.

We call it a Live event, not because our controllers are meeting up, in person, for a "live" controlling event, but because we are simulating how live we can make the airspace!

While it is officially our responsibility to send contact requests, I feel like I send quite a few too many, and some pilot participation in keeping the airspace running as intended would be much appreciated.

Just my humble take on things.  ;)

Looking at the CoC, B3: A pilot must at all times check for appropriate air traffic control coverage for the airspace he is crossing at any given time. If there is an appropriate air traffic controller available or upon request to make contact with an appropriate air traffic controller, then the pilot should immediately contact such controller.

It's not entirely our responsibility to send contact me's. The OR in the policy not only puts the responsibility on us but the pilots as well. I still think pilots, especially in Europe, have become so dependent on the contact me's that they come to expect it and if they don't receive one, it is entirely our fault.

This may be going into too much analysis of this policy, but it sounds like this was the initial intention for the policy, but then they had to add "or upon request" because no one was doing it on their own.

"A pilot must at all times check for appropriate air traffic control coverage for the airspace he/she is crossing at any given time. If there is an appropriate air traffic controller available, then the pilot should immediately contact such controller."

This is the way I look at it: I have found that the pilots who are on the network to be controlled, will contact you on their own. In fact, about 75% of pilots contact me without the use of that feature. The only time I would send Contact me's is when the aircraft will be going into an adjacent ARTCC.

If people get angry about it, I educate them on the CoC and ways they can find out where they are in respect to the controllers online (VAT-SPY, vataware ETC).

I have been doing this system for about a year, and I haven't had any major issues. That being said, I control in a ARTCC where there are not many overflights, so that may have an affect on the above points.
