The Control Room Floor / Reality vs. Accomodating VATSIMisms

You guys crack me up with this "real world" this, and "real world" that.

Quote from: Scott DeWoody
I'm just getting a little sick of the "real world" thing.

Who are "you guys" and who is making you "sick"? I do not see one post in this thread of a person saying they would not issue a direct to clearance. Where is it? Am I blind? The only post saying that someone said they would not was in Don's OP about a controller who probably is not even reading this thread anyways.

"I think it is silly not to give a shortcut based on the fact that an adjacent ARTCC is not online. Granted, I don't mean "proceed direct the other side of the country", but a VOR in an adjoining ARTCC's airspace, particularly one that your guys might have on the scope, is not a reach."

That's all I'm trying to say also.

As I read all of these posts it looks as if everyone in here was in agreement with this. So instead of making you sick and cracking you up. Please reread the post and see that everyone in here so far has agreed with this.

The Control Room Floor / Reality vs. Accomodating VATSIMisms

Curious....

What prevents us from giving a vector direct next NAVAID/FIX outside our airspace without actual clearance to that which is not in our jurisdiction if the pilot has made a request for a shortcut?

EXAMPLE: "Fly heading xxx". Once the aircraft has reached the limits of your ARTCC airspace, either hand-off to the next ARTCC with an amended flight plan, or the ususal phrase of "XXXX, you are leaving my airspace, XXX CTR not on- line at this time, freqency change approved" (etc.). Chat or call to next controller before handoff might be a good courtesy as well.

[!--quoteo--][div class=\\\'quotetop\\\']QUOTE [/div][div class=\\\'quotemain\\\'][!--quotec--]4-4-6. DIRECT CLEARANCES
b. EN ROUTE. Do not issue revised routing clearances that will take an aircraft off its flight plan route past the last fix in your facility's airspace, unless requested by the pilot or operational necessity dictates.[/quote]

However, it must be noted that plain and simple this conversation dictates on common sense (oh no did I just use that term on a VATSIM discussion board ). What time of day is it, What day of the week is it. How busy is the NAS. Are there any events taking place nearby (especially at the destination airport or other airports along their route). What airport are they going to. Is that a large hub and busy airport. Is it a satellite field of a large hub and busy airport. These and more are all factors to consider when answering this question.

For example when working ZID I will give "direct to" clearances all the time. Probably 10 times more than when controlling ZTL. It all just came down to how the airspace was designed and how tightly compact that section airspace is they are flying through. Also that ZID saw a lot more en route traffic where ZTL is heavily populated with arrivals and departures.

General Discussion / Again?

Not for you Adam! You are still on the staff list    .

Now me on the other hand.....Davor, I will start heading south down I-71 it will take me about 6 hours to get you, but after that how far south should we head   ?

Similar to ASN, Talladaga Airport, they open a temporary tower for race week. I am sure the same thing will happen for Lakeland and Oshkosh.

Thanks William. My other question is has anyone ever had their account hacked/had an old one been given to someone else by vatsim? Or does vatsim never give old accounts to new members?

Each is assigned a unique VATSIM account. The only time I have heard of someone getting access to another account would be if the original user mishandled their CID and password. I would not consider that a hack but rather the users fault for not keeping thier passwords secret.

The Classroom (Controller Tips) / "Radar Contact"
« on: November 18, 2012, 11:01:29 PM »
To dive into a bit further technical area for you Mr. Miller, the term "Radar Contact" is used to inform you the pilot that I the controller has identified you on the radar scope. This is information is important to you as when you are identified on radar your may stop normal position reporting procedures. This will occur, as Kenneth mention, in most areas covered by a terminal (Approach/Departure) or En Route (Center) radar coverage areas.

In order to assist a controller with identifying you (determining which target (dot) you are on the radar screen), it is best to report a position to the radar controller on initial contact similar to as you with normal position reporting procedures in non-radar coverage areas. The controller may observe a target in the position of which you reported to determine identification or may also use a secondary radar identification method (Using the aircraft's transponder) to further assist with identification and tracking. This is true in most cases except on initial communications with a departure controller when departing a towered field. The reason it is not necessary to report a position to a departure controller is because the local controller (tower) will provide the departure controller of your position for you. This is commonly known as a "rolling call" (among a few others) but is completely an ATC procedure.

General Discussion / ARTCC Recommendation?
« on: November 08, 2012, 09:05:58 AM »
Other than events, I am not aware of any VATUSA facility that has in place a day to day controller scheduling system.

As a facility manager I too am bias.  As I am limited on time this morning and will defer a point to point response. In short, I would describe Atlanta Center (vZTL) as one of the most innovative. From our software to our procedures to our training methods, we like to think out of the box and concentrate on all details to continuously seek improvement and unique operations while remaining within the confines provided by the COC, COR, GRP, and 7110.65 and in the spirit of real world aviation. Examples of this may be our pre-setup controlling software (VRC with all settings, Profiles, ATIS format, Frequencies, etc. set for all ATCTs), or our development of Pre Departure Clearances (PDCs- www.PDC.vZTLartcc.net) which are currently used and very successful. There are many times where the level of support places a hindrance on the the development of these ideas, but you will find this at nearly any facility especially in the areas of training. However, we hold many other innovative ideas regarding operations and processed which development time will simply depend on the man power of those interested in participating in that development.

Although we accept all types of personality, We seek individuals who hold a passion for learning and educating each other on aviation and when it comes to ATC we do not only study the phraseology and procedures but also "WHY" these procedures and phraseology is in place.

As a social manager who likes to frequently interact with many of my neighboring facilities, I can say I would have no complaints with vZMP, vZBW, and vZDC.

If you have further questions or wish me to describe items in further detail whether it be about vZTL or may experiences at other facilities, I am also happy to discuss this with anyone.

The Classroom (Controller Tips) / zau sector

I also recall that ZAU posted many of their sector files in their website forum and teamspeak file directory. This many no longer be accurate as it has been a while since I have gathered them, but not a bad place to check.

Adds you to a mailing list where we can send you more details regarding the event

Later I wish to add more features with the pilot sign ups as well, but before hand want to see if the work would even be worth while based on how much attraction we get.

The Classroom (Controller Tips) / Controlling the Arrivals

Personally, I wouldn't vector an aircraft off a STAR unless they are within 50 miles of the Arrival Airport.

Just my thought ^^

Regards,

Why though? What makes <50 any different.

NXXXX - Proceed Direct Minneapolis airport, descend at pilots discretion, maintain 10000

And knowing this there have been plenty of times I have cleared an aircraft direct MSP all the say down by SDF, CRW, or CMH when i worked ZID and you guys were online. Seemed many enjoyed it, both controller and pilot. This was again during the mid with just one or two arrivals heading to MSP.

When I get a chance to get back to working on LOAs with our adjacent facilities I would like to ad a mid shift clause allowing for direct clearances.
