General Discussion / C3 Rating
« on: November 24, 2011, 08:48:05 PM »
Quote from: Kevin Kelm
The sole purpose of the C3 rating is to reward excellence in controlling on the VATSIM network. Why does there have to be a defined metric? If its a special award rewarded by a division to a controller, why does their have to be a set "standard". Its like saying the medal of honor or silver star, or a rank in general should be awarded based off of years in service.

I understand it is at the discretion of the division to utilize the rating or not; I am not arguing that. But as a controller on this network for almost nine years, I feel myself, and the rest of us should have a say in how the division is ran.

I realize I haven't been around as long as some others but I must admit that I am a little confused by your request.  First you suggest that the award should be considered for "excellence in controlling".   Then you ask why there should be a set standard.  I don't know that
I know how to define "excellence in controlling" without at the least having something to compare it to.

You further cite the GRP:
"The rating of Senior Controller (C3) may be awarded by any VATSIM Division to give recognition of seniority, performance or any additional role beyond that of a normal Controller (C1) as determined by the local Region/Division."

Well If I understand you correctly you are also saying that it is not an award that should be given solely for years of experience.  So I am curious what you are basing it on because as I said earlier I am pretty new here and I don't know you, so for the benefit of the newbie in the room tell me why you feel you deserve recognition based on the GRP for, as stated, "performance or any additional role beyond that of a normal controller"

As someone who hasn't been here for nine years I too feel that we should have some input into division policy and am willing to listen to your argument and perhaps take up your cause.  But so far the only argument you have made is that the Division reconsider its position on the awarding of the certification, not that you are deserving of consideration.

Make your case sir.

Ira

General Discussion / Please update roster zny

Hello Mr Friedland,

I've got an email called welcome to new york

Within 24 hours you will receive an e-mail which will include your facility assignment and password. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the website and forum as these are very important resources and will provide you with information on how you should go about getting started in this exciting and interesting hobby of ours.

I didn't get that email. Would you be able to resend this?

Mr. de Leeuw, according to the records your assignment was issued on 06/11 as was your invitation to your first exam. I cannot address why you dd not receive that information however I strongly suggest that instead of continuing to reply here in this forum that you read this post, fight the urge to respond, and proceed directly to the ZNY web site where your account awaits.

As previously mentioned, your questions can be better answered if you direct them to [email protected].  Continued posts here will not be responded to in a timely manner however direct email usually provokes a respond in fairly short order.

You may aso wish to drop by the ZNY Teamspeak server and introduce yourself to some of your fellow controllers. They too will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.  The information for TS is easily found in our web site forums.

So welcome to ZNY.

Ira R..

That works in the Army, or in a corporation. It doesn't work in a volunteer organization - the only currency you have to attract and retain volunteers is engagement and participation. If you don't want to communicate to members, you shouldn't be surprised if you can't find enough engaged volunteers.

I presume that VATUSA has an overwhelming number of controllers where all positions are being staffed and they need to turn people away?

Cheers!

Luke

That's nonsense. The process of engaging volunteers has nothing to do with knowing what's going on behind the curtain at a level that most members will never care about. They want to control and they want to fly and as long as the network is there when they want to do that then all is fine with the world. They care more about what happened last night on the ARTCC Teamspeak. You want to disenfranchise your volunteers watch how fast someone with an agenda can tear apart an ARTCC.

For  the most part what goes on at the "corporate level" doesn't effect any of us unless there are decisions being made that change our day to day operations. I don't need to know what Gary is doing to do my job or see to it that my controllers are having fun doing theirs, all I need to know is that he's paying the electric bill each month so the network doesn't go down.  It's not my job to be a watchdog of the corporate office. There are other people higher up on the food chain who are tasked to do that.

That goes for staffing the office as well. I don't care if a few desks sit empty as long as the job is being done.  As far as I'm concerned the only state of the state I want to hear is "things are fine, nothing has changed now go play".

But then no one would have anything to argue about and there wouldn't be an excuse to start another discussion on what's right or wrong with VATUSA.

So not to defend Gary or anything, he is certainly able to do that himself, but what is it exactly you would have him say?  "I haven't filled any of  the positions because I don't see the need right now?"
What else?  I must admit I am quite curious what it is that people are so interested in hearing that the managment style of VATUSA1 is being questioned.

As for the comment that trying to get answers to questions is like pulling teeth I must admit that I myself have not experienced that problem and so I can't address it. Whenever I have a question for Gary he has been most forthcoming in his response. He doesn't always get to it right away, but I presume that he prioritizes his correspondance in some manner and I am alright with that because he has never not gotten back to me.
