I know that all of the posts that follow this one will include all of the platitudes deserving of the situation, so I leave that to everyone else.  Instead, I will simply say"thank you".  Somehow that doesn't sound near enough, yet I know that it is.

Good luck Boss.

The Classroom (Controller Tips) / Re: Traffic Management in VATSIM
« on: October 11, 2017, 08:53:28 PM »
Appreciate the response Ira. I am aware of the content that ZNY made with Alex Evins and AJ, but that information is either inaccessible or deprecated. That content was also before "my time" here with ZNY. During the time between then and now, I perceived a lull in the attention given to traffic management, so my interest in it led me to create this. Plus, I want to create this project in a fashion that I synthesized, rather than an extension of what was already created.

Due to the shear nature of the traffic management community, the materials overlap. Nonetheless, all of my content is original. Any resemblance to previously created material is simply coincidence. I have citations for any material used other than that which is easily accessible and publicly distributed content (like most pictures or videos)

I would love to see the material that ZNY had but such material is not readily available without me having to reach out to someone for the resources (which I don't want to do).

And at this point, I have no inclination of including VATUSA management on this (yet). I want to create a workable system first with material that I created. That's my take. Hope this clears some things up.

It clears up your thinking, yes.  You would rather do it yourself.  That's fine.  I think the questions that were raised were natural to the way the process started.  Confusion over the web site, a question regarding your training process, all with the intent to distinguish your efforts from that of the Division, and offer Division support if desired.

But you have made it clear you don't want that. So what is there to say but good luck with the project.

Hello Jeremy. Without trying to dissuade you from this project, I can't help but wonder what happened to all the information and web site structure that New York had?  Your opening screens are familiar and I believe they are a part of the full package that ZNY once had online. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I should expect you to mine any material that was used previously.

AJ should be able to direct you there. And if he can't I probably have the full package that we used when we ran our own internal TMU class. Did you know we did that?  It was something like a 12 week class if I remember right.

Anyway, I was just trying to point out that you may not have to reinvent the wheel here, and that if you do choose to include VATUSA at some point, earlier is better than later.

I am going to be out of town leaving Wed Oct 4 and returning Tue Oct 10 to change my clothes, and then leaving again on Oct 12th.  I will be traveling so I expect to have minimal access to email through my cell phone until such time as I have access to my computer again. I estimate that to occur on or about Oct 23rd.

I will be leaving both my office door and the liquor cabinet unlocked.  I found out on my last trip that it's cheaper to replace just the booze then to have to replace the booze and both locks!

Remember that it's polite to take your empties with you and for the last one out to turn off the light and close the door behind them.

If you have any questions or problems that cannot wait I suggest you email your local Air Traffic Director or look up the answer in our Knowlegebase.  The directory of Regional Directors is on the front page of the web site, as is the Knowledgebase.  Between the two any question you may have should be something they can help you with.

Events / Re: Atlanta LIVE!
« on: September 18, 2017, 06:14:45 PM »
I have a question, but I really don't want to poke the fire from before, but it's a related tangent here:  What happened to the announcement for the actual-Live Atlanta Live event for next year?  I can't seem to find it anymore.

Then why poke the fire?  I hope Matt doesn't mind that I answer this one.  Since the event is quite some distance off, a request was made, and granted, that the discussion, which some thought had turned more off topic that it should have, be removed until more details become available.

Let it go Matthew.  Move along. There's nothing to see here.

PE isn't much more real.

+1

Let's not encourage people to leave VATSIM for PilotEdge if they're looking for realism, please. Plenty of realism around here, too.

Agreed, of course. What I think Tony is pointing out is the fact that we can nitpick the interpretation of the words to death, but all that serves to do is give us something to debate and argue whether or not it takes away from or adds to the level of realism each of us is looking for.

And unfortunately, it does nothing to add to the fun of flying or controlling which, as Tony also pointed out, is really what most of us joined to do.

General Discussion / Re: Discussion about sector IDs

Your wish is my command!

This thread has been locked.  Not because the discussion isn't worth having, but because it has split into multiple discussions and gotten difficult to keep track of who is speaking to who and which point they are discussing.

But nothing stops anyone from opening a new thread and trying again, if that is your wish.

This thread has made one thing pretty clear to me:  Depending on which way I turn my head, the rules and interpretations of what needs to be adjusted for VATSIM are either one-sided or arbitrary.

In other words you can't be all things to all people all the time.  And this surprises you Matthew?  You've been around too long for that.

Matthew, you make some good points, although I don't know that we can simplify it by saying things were better in the old days. That comparison has become all too common and all too easy to make, and is solely dependent on your own experience.

But to the point regarding controller and pilot behavior, unfortunately, we can't teach good manners and we can only preach common sense. So you do the best you can with what you have.

Agreed that looking at the past with rose-colored glasses isn't always the right answer, but I'm cherry picking for a reason :)

There are evolutions that I love (for example, voice... pre-voice VATSIM kinda really sucked) and wouldn't ever want to revert lol.  Newer controller clients allowing for better presentation an interaction, as well.  Actually, it sounds like I generally appreciate technology improvements, but I may have more concerns with some of the cultural changes.

Those cultural changes, as you put it, are more than simply cultural.   They're also generational.  And there isn't a damn thing you, we, can do about that.  If mom didn't teach you when to say thank you, I have little chance of doing so myself.

Of course, that doesn't mean we don't bang our heads against the wall trying  ;)

Ira will be here, he's not eligible for leave accrual, yet.

No, I'm not. However, having finagled an invite to a company sponsored conference, I know that if I use a couple of days on both ends as travel days, I can honestly say that I will be away on company business from July 27 to August 7.   That makes it a paid holiday!
