Virtual Airlines / Freight Dogs Celebrates 3 Years!
« on: December 14, 2011, 03:36:08 PM »
Freight Dogs virtual Airlines is proud to announce its three year anniversary on the Vatsim network. What started at this time three years ago as just one pilot, a hub and a dream, is now enjoyed by many and we only just yet begun to grow!

As of today, Freight Dog pilots have logged almost 7,000 flights, over 10,000 flight hours, over a million flight miles and hauled over some six million pounds of cargo worldwide in just three years. Freight Dogs has grown to manage 8 worldwide hubs. Our most recent addition was our second European hub, Frankfurt - Hahn (EDFH).

Recently, Freight Dogs also created its own passenger alliance airline - virtual CityLink Airlines. CityLink has four operational hubs in the USA with more to be added on the horizon. Now our pilots can enjoy the benefits of both cargo and pax flights with the freedom to fly any aircraft, anytime, anywhere on the Vatsim network without restrictions that other VA's might have.

We look forward to another great year on the Vatsim network. Freight Dogs and CityLink are inviting and accepting new pilots to be part of our organization and to join us in the voyage of our fourth year on Vatsim.

Quote from: Ryan Geckler
Could some sort of educational deal be reached between VATSIM/VATUSA and FAA? Of course, it'd have to be on a regulated website, but it'd be better than nothing.

Great idea Ryan. I would think this to be a great way to approach a resolution to the matter, otherwise writing our Congressman may be the next step. Maybe Vatsim could get the FAA to let Vatsim use the charts with the agreement the charts would be visible only to Vatsim members.

Third step - Fire up the copy machine

Government Failures -

Postal Service (broke)
Amtrak (broke)
Medicare (broke)
Social Security (broke  - backed by Treasury bills, no cash)
Healthcare (on the verge of chaos)
Fannie Mae (bailed out with stimulus money and still asking for more)
Freddie Mac (bailed out with stimulus money and still asking for more)

...and now it appears the FAA may not be far behind.

John,

We've all been there done that!

The 737 is really in a class of its own compared to the others you mentioned.

Typically the 737 final approach speed after the Outer Marker should be about 130 to 140kts. Maybe more if the aircraft is full.

The heavies may require around 150 kts sometimes slightly more on final. Again, weight factors in on this as well. Adjust for weight. Slower approaches can be done in light loads, heavy loads require more speed/lift.

Other factors may also include surface wind. For strong wind or gusty wind conditions, you might shy away from full flaps. You will also want your approach speed to be slightly faster in these conditions too.

Fly it to the touchdown zone, flair prior to touchdown (as you flair speed will dimenish) then retard throttle within 10-20 ft above the runway.

Remember: Flaps are not to slow down the aircraft. Flaps are to allow the aircraft slower flight. Use the speed brakes to slow down.

I make sure I'm 210 kts when setting up the localizer approach. 180kts at the Outer Maker then adjusting for final approach speed. 240kts trying to make a turn will usually cause you to over shoot the turn or the localizer.

 Hope this helps,

The Flight Deck / vfr landing with B738
« on: June 07, 2011, 04:06:06 PM »
If you are VFR, why not just plan to enter the pattern for your choice runway for wind. Grand Canyon rwy 03 is left traffic and rwy 21 is right traffic. If visiblility is good, all you need to know is runway elevation, length and the aforementioned. Ex: Enter downwind at pattern altitude and state your intentions. You can also enter the pattern on the crosswind leg, base leg or straight in. Entering downwind is the preferred method for VFR but you can utilize the other methods as well, especially if there is no traffic.

If you are shooting an ILS then, rwy 03 is the way to go or you can attempt a (non-published) localizer back course when landing rwy 21. You would have to rely on the VASI since there are no approach lights for rwy 21.

General Discussion / ZLA Pilot Training
« on: May 28, 2011, 11:46:29 AM »
Recently, I was flying with a group of pilots into a major airport that was uncontrolled at the time. What happens way to often is, even when myself or another pilot has announced intentions for arrival and landing, some one always screws up the plan by not announcing and or landing against traffic that has clearly made intensions over unicom before the errant pilot has.

The basic rule of thumb I use when no controller is on, is to use calm wind preferred runways whenever possible under calm wind conditions unless someone has announced intentions otherwise, then I will follow traffic flow. Common sense is all it takes. Some pilots will always find a short cut no matter what, even if it goes against the grain of others. But that's what you get from a game environment.

A good pilot will know the destination airport and its operations long before he arrives. Many times I've seen pilots land on the wrong parallel runway merely because they had no clue as to the airport layout because they didn't do their home work before taking off. A successful flight starts with the good pre-flight briefing.
