Virtual Airlines / TWO new VATSTAR Instructors!
« on: May 27, 2017, 09:47:54 PM »
Please welcome new VATSTAR Instructors, James Adamini and Daniel Martin!

James hails from South Africa and has several hundred hours each of piloting and controlling on VATSIM.  He is also studying to achieve his real-world Private Pilot's Certificate.  Daniel is from Australia, also has several hundred hours flying and controlling, and is also rated as a VATSIM Oceanic controller.  Both will be teaching in the P1 and P2 programs and are both looking to progress toward achieving and teaching within higher Pilot Ratings programs.

VATSTAR's Instructor staff is becoming truly global, with ten total Instructors on staff now: five from the US, one from Canada, one from Denmark, one from Singapore, one from South Africa, and one from Australia.  We recently reduced the minimum time commitment to four hours per month, to help us broaden our reach and diversify our staff's background.  We are still accepting applications so please visit us at www.vatstar.com, "About Us," and "Careers" if you are interested.  Minimum qualifications are 1 year on the network, 150+ pilot hours, and P1 and P2 pilot ratings.

Virtual Airlines / VATSTAR welcomes new Instructor, Faris Chong!
« on: May 23, 2017, 07:24:59 AM »
Greetings, all -- please join me in celebrating the addition of Faris Chong to the VATSTAR Instructor staff.  VATSTAR further globalizes its Instructor ranks with this appointment, a real-world member of the Republic of Singapore Air Force Youth Squadron pursing his Private Pilot's Certificate.  Faris also boasts 900+ VATSIM hours in a very diverse blend of General Aviation and airliner operations.  He's very personable with a great sense of humor and I've no doubt he'll be a hit with VATSTAR's P2 Students.  He looks forward to attaining additional Pilot Ratings and expanding his role as a VATSTAR Instructor accordingly in the near future.  Welcome, Faris!

Greetings all -- please welcome Aaron Essary, VATSTAR's newest Instructor, to the staff!  Aaron joined VATSIM in 2010 and has logged over 1200 pilot hours on the network; prior to that, he was active (as was yours truly) with FlightGear Flight Simulator.  There he logged many hundreds more hours, was a regular in online events, and founded a successful VA within the community.  Aaron holds the P1 and P2 Pilot Ratings and is well-versed in airliners, but does a good amount of GA flying as well, all in both the US and Europe.  I'm very pleased to welcome an old friend to the VATSTAR team and I know he will become a wonderful asset to our Students!

Please join me in welcoming Michael "Max" Maxham to the VATSTAR Instruction staff.  Max is based in Phoenix, AZ and is a real-world Air Transport Pilot for Swift Air with over 7500 real-world hours including time in B1900s, Learjets, and 737s.  He's also a 15-year member of VATSIM and a Senior-Instructor-rated VATSIM Controller.  On top of that, he's super-friendly and definitely a great resource for pilots of all experience levels so we're blessed to have him as part of our team!  Welcome, Max!

The Flight Deck / VATSTAR'S Oceanic Certificate program is here!
« on: February 28, 2017, 10:27:49 PM »
VATSTAR is proud to announce the unveiling of its Oceanic Training Certificate!  This course covers everything you need to know to get started flying international, trans-oceanic flights on VATSIM, including basics of latitude/longitude and Great Circle routes, route creation including use of the North Atlantic OTS, tips on international procedure and terminology, filing your flightplan and obtaining your clearance, using SELCAL, announcing your position reports, and even some tips and tricks for participating in VATSIM's semi-annual Cross The Pond event!

Pilots holding the VATSIM P4 rating are eligible to enroll now by visiting us at VATSTAR.com!  If you don't have the P4, you can acquire it from us through our simple process of attending a Written Exam Review, taking and passing the exam, performing a practice flight, and performing two fairly brief (~1.5hr) checkride flights, each of these steps with one of our staff Instructors.  (If you prefer a self-study method of obtaining the P4, Boston Virtual ARTCC offers it through their Pilot Rating Program; their P4 consists of five short flights you can do pretty much anytime ZBW ATC is staffed.  Visit http://www.bvartcc.com/ for more details.)

The VATSTAR Oceanic certification is obtained by written exam only; there is no practical checkride to fly.  Because of that, the exam IS NOT A JOKE and should only be attempted once having THOROUGHLY reviewed the study materials.  A Written Exam Review session with a staff Instructor is mandatory prior to attempting the exam.  The exam itself is 40 multiple-choice questions with a 60-minute time limit.  There are NO "joke responses" among the choices.  You have to know your stuff to achieve this certificate!

Please note that this Certificate is NOT a VATSIM Pilot Rating.  The VATSIM Pilot Training Division does not currently officially recognize a rating for International and Oceanic flying, although a designation for one has been set aside for future expansion.  If that changes, graduates of the VATSTAR Oceanic Certificate program will be contacted and advised what steps, if any, they must take at that point to convert their Certificate into an official VATSIM Pilot Rating.

Anyone who wishes to enroll can visit us at VATSTAR.com.  Questions about enrollment and access can be directed to [email protected].  Questions about the training material itself can be directed to [email protected].  We look forward to serving your VATSIM Pilot Training needs.  See you in the skies!

Hi all --

Please join me in welcoming two new Instructors to the VATSTAR staff, Aaron Osher and Aidan Stevens!

Aaron is a controller and Webmaster for the Chicago ARTCC (ZAU) and has several hundred hours flying and controlling on the VATSIM network.  He currently resides in the UK, which will help open up hours of availability outside of the normal "USA primetime," benefiting our students outside the US who seem to be growing in number every day!

Aidan is currently the Assistant Webmaster for VATSTAR and is helping us out by taking on the additional role of Instructor as well.  He also has several hundred hours' flying and controlling, and has logged ATC hours with Cleveland (ZOB) and Vancouver FIR (CZVR), and currently resides in Vancouver, giving us those crucial west-coast hours.

Both are currently P1/P2 rated and will continue working toward additional Pilot Ratings themselves.  Welcome to the team, Aaron and Aidan!

Note that VATSTAR is still looking for qualified Instructors -- candidates must have 1yr and 150+ hours flying on the network and be P1/P2 rated, and be available an average of 4hrs/wk.  Visit our site under "About Us" and "Careers" to apply.

Simple Insanity / Cue the afterburners...
« on: December 22, 2016, 03:47:29 PM »
Season's Greetings, all --

Let me set the scene for you -- I am driving along in my car, with my phone's media player on shuffle taking the role of DJ via the Bluetooth-enabled sound system.  Van Halen's "Dreams" is playing, which is a song that the United States Navy's Blue Angels have used as background music for several of their promo video montages.  So I already have images of them dancing in my head as I tool down the streets of suburban Baltimore, all smiles, with the volume cranked.

About two-thirds of the way through the song, right at the beginning of the third refrain (just after the guitar solo ends), I get an email at my VATSTAR account.  On my phone, that triggers the sound effect of an F/A-18 Hornet fly-by -- which then booms through the cabin of the car overtop of the music, rattling the glass a little as it does.

This is the recipe for a huge grin and uncontrollable laughter, and a few little tears of joy, this holiday season -- at least for me.  And it was a mighty tasty one indeed.  I hope each of you reading this gets to experience your own flavor of joy sometime throughout the holiday.

Best wishes and safe travels!

General Discussion / Help me find qualified Instructors for VATSTAR...?
« on: December 11, 2016, 11:07:28 PM »
Greetings --

I wonder if I might enlist the assistance of my colleagues here.

VATSTAR is an Authorized Training Organization which offers the VATSIM P1 through P5 ratings.  Aside from the P1 (which is a self-guided automated lesson sequence), we rely on one-on-one meetings between Students and Instructors to deliver the classroom and practical instruction that our program dictates.  Of late, we have become somewhat short-handed among our Instructor ranks, and we've just been given notice of another pending resignation due to family reasons.

We have had notices posted on this forum among others, as well as on our own website,  advertising openings for the Instructor position for many weeks now.  But passive advertising seems to be falling short.  So, I wonder if I might enlist your assistance in helping us identify and actively recruit pilots on the network who might be interested in becoming an Instructor.

The general requirements for the position are that candidates must have one year of experience on the network and a minimum of 150 flying hours, as well as the P1 and P2 pilot ratings.  The time commitment to the position is an average of 6 hours per week.

I appreciate any assistance you might lend.  Please have any potential candidates contact me at [email protected].

Greetings, all --

Please join me in welcoming Ricky Petersen, VATSTAR's newest Instructor.  He is rated and available to teach the VATSIM P1, P2 and P4 Pilot Ratings, and is halfway done his P3 checkrides as well.  Ricky will be our first intercontinental Instructor on-staff -- until now, all of us have been from North America, but Ricky hails from Denmark and we are excited to elicit his help in serving students in time zones outside of the US.

Welcome, Ricky, and thanks for becoming a part of our team!

(FYI, the message within my signature is still current as of this writing -- we're still looking to pick up two, maybe three more Instructors.  If you are interested, visit our website, the "Careers" menu option, and the "Apply Now" link.  Email me with any questions.  Thanks!)

Hello all -- VATSTAR is seeking experienced, knowledgeable, and personable simulator pilots to join its staff of Instructors.  Their core duty is to provide classroom and in-flight guidance to members.  Selected applicants must maintain at least three 2hr blocks available per week, and check the status of each one 24-48 hours before its start time.  They must document all student interaction, and provide feedback to the CFI on students, written lessons, and exams.  Minimum qualifications include at least 1 year on the VATSIM network with at least 150 flight hours, preferably in a blend of commercial and GA aircraft.  Applicants must possess VATSIM pilot ratings P1 and P2; preferential consideration will be given to holders of P3, P4, and/or P5.  Additional preferential consideration will be granted toward candidates with real-world flight experience, VATSIM ATC experience, prior involvement with a Virtual Airline or other Virtual Flight Simulation organization, and/or experience in a teaching environment (formal or informal).  Applications will be solicited until July 18th at 2359z; qualified candidates will interview via TeamSpeak, and finalists will perform a checkride flight monitored via TeamSpeak and TeamViewer.  Apply by coming to VATSTAR.com, the "Staffing" menu option, and the "Apply Now" button.  For more information email [email protected] or [email protected].

The Flight Deck / ILS approaches to non-towered fields?
« on: January 23, 2016, 12:03:01 AM »
Hi guys -- I'm putting together some practice flight recommendations, and for one of them I am looking for non-towered fields that contain at least one ILS approach.  I know they're relatively rare but there are a few out there.  In particular I would like some recommendations for such animals within the ZJX, ZOB, and ZDV areas if possible.  Thanks for the help!

The Flight Deck / New US-based P3 program now available...
« on: January 01, 2016, 11:04:06 PM »
Hi all -- VATSTAR is pleased to announce that we are now authorized to administer the P3 Pilot Rating, in addition to the P1 and P2 programs we already offer.  Our P3 program is 12 self-study written lessons, a written exam review and test, then one practice flight and two checkrides.  If you're interested in enrolling, please head over to our site and check it out.  Note that our P3 program builds off of concepts covered in the P2 rating, so we consider the P2 (earned from us or anyone else) a prerequisite for our P3.  We look forward to offering this exciting new program in 2016!

The Control Room Floor / "I said cleared DIRECT to ___!"
« on: December 31, 2015, 11:08:42 AM »
Hiya VATUSA Controllers --

First of all, Happy New Year!

Secondly, I need your input on something.

You're all familiar with the scenario -- the pilot's departure procedure calls for flying a particular heading after takeoff, then once you vector them clear of any traffic, you're supposed to clear them direct to the SID entry point.  However, they're stricken with a case of "magentalinitis" and fly the route segment which connects their origin airport with that point, rather than the imaginary one which connects their current location directly with that waypoint.

My question -- what's the best, most common, and most egregious specific SID where this occurs?  I'm trying to create a tutorial, including a diagram, to explain to pilots why this is wrong and how to do it the right way.  But I'm having trouble coming up with a real-world (err... real-VATSIM-world) example which lends itself to a clear diagram illustrating the problem.  I'm looking at the SIDs out of KIND as an example, but with VHP being offset from the field somewhat, it's making the diagrams less than clear on the subject.  Not being a controller myself, I'm struggling to find a better example where a diagram would more clearly depict the issue.

Is there another commonly used airport with SIDs that start on proscribed headings where you constantly see pilots taking the path from the origin to the first waypoint rather than the direct heading?  What's YOUR favorite example of this case?

The lesson and diagram will become part of VATSTAR's P4 Pilot Rating program which we hope to have up-and-running by the end of January or thereabouts; so, once we roll it out, when you all see pilots mess this up, you'll know where to refer them, LOL...

Thanks for your help, and again, have a fantastic and safe New Year's!
