News / Announcing the return of HCF and ZAN
« on: September 15, 2022, 07:51:54 PM »
Over the past few weeks a dedicated group of awesome individuals has been working tirelessly to launch the return of the Honolulu Control Facility (HCF) and Anchorage Air Route Traffic Control Center (ZAN), which were formerly combined as the Pacific Control Facility (PCF).
I would like to personally thank Joseph Kerr, Danny Evans, Dave Mayes, and Paul Biderman for their time, effort, and energy in creating new SOPs and setting up the structure of these two facilities.
Joseph Kerr will be overseeing operations at both facilities as the Air Traffic Manager. Dave Mayes and Paul Biderman will be the Deputy Air Traffic Manager at HCF and ZAN respectively. Danny Evans will be doing triple duty as not only the ATM at ZFW but also as the interim Training Administrator at both HCF and ZAN. Mark Mangrinch will be serving as the Facility Engineer overseeing both facilities at this time.
HCF and ZAN home controllers are granted mutual visiting for non-major designated airspace at both facilities, a greater availability of training staff, and a wider swatch of airspace in which to control. We encourage those interested in staff positions to view the recent position vacancy announcements.

Eric Steiner will be taking over, effective immediately, as the Air Traffic Manager at ZSE. Eric currently serves in a leadership position in the Pilot Training Department for VATSIM, has helped out in many social media aspects for VATUSA, and was the Deputy Air Traffic Manager at ZSE.

I would like to thank Jon Owens for serving as Training Administrator and the VATUSA Technical Director for the past few months. Matthew Woerly will be stepping down as Air Traffic Manger, which he took over as when ZSE needed him to step up from being the Training Administrator. With that said, Matthew is taking over, effective immediately, as the ZSE TA!

I would like to thank @Nolan | ATM for his over year of service as ATM (and practically ATM before that) and TA here at ZFW. He will be sticking around controlling and will continue to be a valuable member of the facility.

But without further ado, I would like to welcome Danny Evans as the new Air Traffic Manager at ZFW! Danny brings a massive amount of VATSIM and RL experience in the aviation industry. He holds numerous pilot ratings (as exemplified by his current Discord nickname on here), has served as an events coordinator, instructor,/TA and former DATM at both HCF and here at ZFW

News / New Denver ATM Selected
« on: June 28, 2021, 02:27:29 PM »
With Brandon Wening becoming the VATUSA Events Manager, the Denver ATM spot became open. Brandon has continued the long lineage of maintaining a mountain high worth of quality controllers and events in his tenure at ZDV. ZDV has an excellent community, relationship with its neighbors, and overall dedication to the hobby that we expect will continue into the future. Brandon however will not be far away!

Austin Wilkins has been selected as the new Air Traffic Manager at ZDV. Austin brings real world management experience as a former supervisor for Envoy Airlines, provides services for ZDV on PilotEdge, and previously has served as VATUSA's Deputy Training Director, facility DATM & TA, and has assisted the training departments are many facilities in the Division.
I think Austin's goals to continue the excellent work Brandon and the team at ZDV have done, coupled with his experience will only continue to grow ZDV in the future.
He will be assuming the role effective 0000Z on July 1st.

Without further ado:
Christopher Maddox has been selected as the Chicago Air Traffic Manager and will begin the position this evening.
Christopher brings a wealth of experience to the position, as both a sales manager for a medical device company and a former facility and Division staff member in VATCAR.
ZAU's community and uptime have been getting stronger and I only expect that to continue under Christopher's leadership.

When we implemented the VATUSA Training Standards last July we discussed how this process would be iterative, collaborative, and transparent in nature.

We recently completed the one year stage check milestone and I wanted to share with the general membership the results of the surveys offered to a randomly selected number of students and all VATUSA instructor rated controllers. You may review the results here.

While we met most of our Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), we did not meet a couple. There is commentary on what we are planning on doing to address unmet KPIs and other areas we fell that we from the department-end can accomplish with all of your help.

Also, there are a few other topics discussed that while we did meet the KPI(s), we feel there is room for improvement.

Please reach out to myself and Austin via e-mail or Discord if you wish to discuss these results, have ideas that we should look into to further move the standardization along, or any general comments relating to training.

« on: September 17, 2019, 07:11:39 PM »
VATUSA is proud to announce the introduction of a discord based generalized training support system staffed by instructor rated controllers. This Discord is moderated and content must be kept strictly to general training questions, anything facility specific must be directed to your home facility training staff.

Common categories we are expecting to deal with:
  • 7110.65 and phraseology questions
  • Weather questions
  • Best practices

When signing on to the Discord please use your name or CID and facility (i.e, John Smith - ZAE (for academy) or 1053581 - ZDC).

Please limit your questions asked to one a day, if you need to ask a follow-up question the trainer assisting you can allow you to bypass slow-mode to ask further, just DM them please.

Also, please remember that we are all volunteers and may not be readily able to get to your question but will do our best to get to them as soon as possible. Once again, no exam-based question will be entertained but a more generalized question that may lead you in the right direction is welcomed if you are that stuck or confused.

Please DO NOT share this link. Inappropriate usage of this Discord will not be tolerated.
