The Virtual Washington ARTCC is pleased to announce Friday Night Ops in 'The Other Capital' featuring Raleigh, North Carolina. The Washington ARTCC is best known for its name sake of the nation's capital in Washington D.C. however the airspace serves a number of other capitals including KRDU which serves the capital of the state of North Carolina. KRDU is the largest airport outside of the Washington metropolitan area for vZDC and serves nearly 10 million passengers a year to mainly the domestic destinations across the US but also to international destinations in Canada, England, France, and Mexico. KRDU is a regional distribution point for UPS in addition to mainline flights from FedEx and UPS. Join the controllers of the Washington ARTCC as we host the 3rd annual 4th of July Preparty. This year we're moving the event to the city of Baltimore and featuring Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (KBWI). In the War of 1812 Fort McHenry successfully defended the city's harbor and the Battle of Baltimore became the inspiration to Francis Scott Key for the Star Spangled Banner: the US national anthem. Today Baltimore features service from all of the large US domestic carriers as well as an international destination as an easier alternative from the other Washington DC metropolitan airports. Whatever you bring we hope to see you there!

About John Foster Dulles

John Dulles was born February 25 1888 in Washington DC. In his early life Dulles studied law and was appointed as a Major in the War Industries Board during World War I. At the conclusion of the war Dulles went on to participate in the US delegation to the Versailles Peace Conference following the Armistice of WW1. After returning to law practice in the 20s and 30s World War II recalled him to further government service where he participated in the San Fransisco Conference which authored the preamble to the United Nations; an organization to which he was appointed delegate in 1946, 1947, and 1950. In 1949 Dulles served for four months as an interim senator for New York. When Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected as the 34th president of the United States in 1953 Dulles was appointed the 52nd Secretary of State where he was instrumental in building up NATO and was the architect of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization. For this, Dulles was named man of the year by Life Magazine in 1954. In 1959, at the age of 71, Dulles died after a three year battle with colon cancer and was interned at Arlington National Cemetery with posthumous awards of the Medal of Freedom and the Sylvanus Thayer Award with Eisenhower dedicating Dulles' namesake to the newly commissioned Washington metropolitan airport that would become KIAD.

Class Charlie Operations: Richmond (KRIC)

September 19, 2015 2300-0200z (1900-2200E, 1600-1900P)

The Virtual Washington ARTCC is pleased to staff up another of our Class C airports in the Commonwealth of Virginia's capital: Richmond. (KRIC) Located only 82nm south of Washington National Airport, those pilots frequenting Washington airspace often may be familiar with Richmond most for the heavy arrival streams overhead into all of the Washington Metropolitan Airports. However on September 19th we're looking to change this area's focus from overflights to destination. Despite its proximity to Washington, Richmond features mainline and regional airline service from American, Delta, and United, service from Allegiant, Jetblue, and Southwest, and cargo service from UPS and FedEx to serve a total of over 3 million passengers and over 100k aircraft movements annually. In addition to a healthy amount of airline support Richmond is also a popular general aviation hub for those traveling to both Virginia's and the nation's capital. Whatever equipment you bring we hope to have you join us for Class Charlie Operations at Richmond.
