My vote is, let's find a BALANCE.  If you want to do a single-field event, you're more than welcome to, anytime you want -- EXCEPT on a Friday night.  I don't think that's too much to ask.

This. This RIGHT here. Enough with the “my airport can beat up your airport” BS. You want to do a single field event? Saturdays and Sundays are fantastic opportunities for them.

Regardless of what was agreed, the event is clearly a tongue-in-cheek nose-thumbing to the new FNO guidelines, which were instituted to *prevent* all FNO traffic from being focused onto a single airfield.

Yes, let's funnel an unrealistic amount of traffic into one of the 3 NY Metro airports during convective weather season and just hope for the best.

I'd better make sure someone's on ZMP so we can start creating 50 MIT for JFK over Iowa...

Events / ZMP/ZKC/ZFW Present FNO: North and South on Interstate 35
« on: August 14, 2021, 11:07:21 PM »

Interstate 35 (I-35) is a major Interstate Highway in the central United States. It stretches from Laredo, Texas, near the Mexican border to Duluth, Minnesota. The highway splits into I-35E and I-35W in two separate places, the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex in Texas and at the Minnesota twin cities of Minneapolis–Saint Paul. In addition to the Dallas-Fort Worth and Minneapolis-Saint Paul areas, the major cities that I-35 also connects to include San Antonio, Austin, Oklahoma City, Wichita, Kansas City, and Des Moines.

Join the Minneapolis, Kansas City, and Ft. Worth ARTCCs as we light up the major length of I-35 and provide uninterrupted ATC services from Minneapolis, all the way South to Dallas/Ft. Worth. Soar over the two distinct 35E/35W splits in Minnesota and Texas, hop from Dallas to Kansas City to compare which city has better BBQ, drop into Oklahoma City to or simply connect any city pair along the storied border-to-border trunk route.

The correct answer is Canes for chicken tenders, Chick-Fil-A for sandwiches.

Also, Popeyes for breakfast.

With summer in full swing, the snowbirds are returning home to the land of 10,000 lakes, Minnesota. Around this time, VATSIM controllers from across the country normally convene in Minneapolis for a weekend of Twin Cities VATSIM controlling for a live event hosted by Minneapolis ARTCC. So come on and bring whatever plane you fancy into KMSP for Northern Migration!

« on: March 04, 2021, 07:47:27 AM »

ZMP knows you waited until the last minute. Don't worry, we won't tell!

Lucky for you, the world famous Mall of America is right across the street from Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport! It's a week before Christmas and the stores are still open!

ZMP will be providing full ATC service to KMSP as well as to Flying Cloud Airport (KFCM) in Eden Prairie, MN, home of the Eden Prairie shopping center.

More than enough time for you to fly in, hit the malls, and fly out...before anyone else knows how long you waited!

2023 ZAB (Phoenix)

I can tell you that I still have controllers with PTSD from 2015, so I doubt we will be hosting a super bowl event in 2023...

I have a couple guys on my roster that still have PTSD from the 2008 PHX Super Bowl event...

2. Find a way to identify a currently-online TMU representative, who may or may not be actively controlling a position, for each ARTCC/facility on a ongoing basis, both during events and outside of event times.

Please don’t get in the habit of combining your TMU position with a controlling position. The times when a TMC is needed to make tactical decisions is almost always during a period of traffic demand that requires a simultaneous elevated level of focus as a controller. Trying to do both at once, in my experience on the network, never ends well.

I’ll echo Jeremy’s sentiments above that during non-weather or non-COVID times, much of the infrastructure being proposed is merely a formality. You’ll thank its presence though during severe weather or during non-standard operations like a runway config change in the middle of an event The latter happened at a Tea Party a few years ago if I recall, and I’ll hazard a guess that you’ll agree that having a dedicated TMU controller made it less of a circus.

The Control Room Floor / Re: Handoffs: Think Frequency, Not Callsign
« on: August 12, 2020, 01:30:45 AM »
Couple key takeaways from Aidan’s post above:

Sector configuration for the neighbors is an integral part of the position relief briefing. The controller being relieved needs to pass on who owns what.

Rejecting handoffs is poor form and shouldn’t ever happen (I really wish you couldn’t reject a handoff in our radar clients - we have no such capability on the real systems). If something’s flashing at you that shouldn’t be (or if you’re so far down the tubes that you need to shut off the neighbors), coordinate.

“ZOB 04, ZBW 39, AAL344 should be flashing at 37”

Or better still, take the handoff and transfer radar to the correct sector.

“ZOB 04, ZBW 39, I flashed AAL344 on to 37. That’s his airspace. Put him on 134.7”

And if the plane is flashing at the right sector and you as the receiving controller need the nuclear option:

“ZOB 04, ZBW 37, I can’t take AAL344, POINTOUT APPROVED. SPIN HIM AND I CAN’T ACCEPT ANY MORE AIRPLANES FOR NOW. I’LL CALL YOU BACK.”

I understand when things get hectic you don’t always have time, but this is where blasting out a quick message on the ATC channel is useful and can very easily duplicate the effect of an interfacility shout line call (someday maybe AFV will have solid G/G comms and we can teach the “real” way to do it).

There’s a right way and a wrong way to shut off the neighbors. We almost always do the latter. Yes, it sucks, but it’s way less of a headache when it’s not a giant panic at the boundary. If you tell me I’m shut off, I don’t keep guys driving at your airspace. The first one or couple of planes might get panic spun, that’s the reality of it. I can then start to come up with a plan to delay, hold, or reroute the next 8-10 or however many more I have headed for that sector behind the first couple in a much more orderly (as orderly as getting shut off can get, anyway) fashion.
