The Flight Deck / confused a bit about non controlled airports..
« on: January 17, 2012, 08:04:15 PM »
Yes, but you would be in contact with ATC before and after entering and exiting the class G there for i found it safe to conclude that you they will need to be in contact with ATC.

May want to fix some of the wording. You can fly in controlled airspace while VFR and not be in contact with ATC. Remember class E airspace is labeled as controlled airspace.

If IFR, you will always need to be in contact with ATC (subject to availability) and will need a clearance from ATC in order to operate IFR. Check your airport facility director and En Route charts for the proper ATC facilities which cover the airports and area you are wishing to fly.

If VFR, you will need to pay close attention to the airspace classification and follow the rules in order to operate within those airspace classifications:

Class G - Not controlled
Class E - Controlled but no required communications for VFR aircraft to operate within. Traffic advisories may be requested with the controlling radar facility and subject to controller workload.
Class D & C - Controlled airspace which all aircraft must have established radio communication with the controlling facility prior to entering class D or C airspace.
Class B - Controlled airspace which requires an explicit ATC clearance prior to entering.
Class A - No VFR operations permitted.

General Discussion / C3 Rating

If The C3 is just an incentive to continue to control maybe we should set a standard of 5000 controlling hours with 3000 hours as an instructor and 2000 has a staff member.

General Discussion / Thank You Bruce Clingan
« on: November 06, 2011, 12:54:53 AM »
I would like to send out a special Thank You to Bruce Clingan as he steps down as ZID ATM. Bruce leaves the ZID ATM position as the 2nd longest current running ATM in all of VATUSA. He has been a mentor and an inspiration to many VATSIM members including myself. The way Bruce handled himself at all times should be a lesson to everyone on the network. It was not often to see Bruce comment on many topics during meetings or on the forums, but when he did anyone who know him would listen well as he would always reply with an intelligent well thought out opinion which rarely could be debated against.  Under Bruce’s command ZID was one of the most stable facilities within VATUSA. ZID is neither the busiest nor the most active but stability has proven to be one of the most important factors for a facility on the network.

For those of you who may not know Bruce personally he is growing into a successful salesman and college instructor. He has a great family with a very enjoyable three year old.  All of this and Bruce was still able to make time for his hobby and help guide the members at vZID. He definitely has a bright future to look forward to.

Bruce I applaud you for your efforts over the years at vZID, and I thank you for being a great mentor to myself not only on how to handle myself on the network but also in life.  I am proud to say that I participated on the network under Bruce Clingan. It will be a strange feeling not seeing your name atop the vZID staff page or the VATUSA membership management, but I know you will still always be there to answer my late night phone calls when I need someone to bounce ideas off of and play my devil’s advocate and bring me back to reality. I thank you for your continued friendship in the past and yet to come in the future. You have set the bar high my friend and someone certainly will have big shoes to fill.

Thanks for you time and friendship,

William Lewis

Hey you stole my joke! I still find it funny listing to ZOB controllers sequence aircraft over the LEBRN Intersection on there way in to CLE. I wonder if there are any hardcore ZOB basketball fans that refuse to use the fix until the name is changed.

Ok, this is getting confusing how about this. ZMP gets SP for there TA (even thought they already have one), so ZTL will take the washed up ZS (hehe). I will then trade you an AZ for an AW and a controller to be named later.

Thanks Gentleman!

It means a lot coming from the ZID gang Davor and Sam. I know the both of them will do well in continuing the success and improvements of ZID.

The Flight Deck / vfr landing with B738
« on: June 05, 2011, 10:04:44 PM »
Also if reduced visability inhibits your ability to get the airport in sight you can also fly the ILS 03 approch to the circling minimums, and when or if you see it circle to land 21. If you are still unable to get visual of the field during the approach fly the missed, hold, determine if the wind is strong enough where you can or cannot land on 03. If so great because now you have lower minimums and are able to fly lower and closer to the field before you must see it. If not make as many attempts as you like untill you reach min fuel where you will need to divert to your alternate airport.

Remember with the excpetion of CAT III ILS with autoland which GCN does not have. All Insturment approaches end with a visual approach. You must always see it before minimums in order to land on it. If you see the approach lights on a strait in approach then you have another 100ft of which you may decend before you see the actual runway

I just want to know which one is AJ. That skinny thing going from ZLA to frigid ZMP is going to need all that hair just to keep warm.

The Flight Deck / Pilots flying JAX, MLB, DAB and MCO/ORL/SFB

I guess it could happen, but I highly doubt that anyone could hop on a center position without having the need to get familiar with the airspace and local procedures first. In all that training time or familiarization time the major field(s) would not always be staffed so that controller would not need the endorsement.

My opinion

Possible (by wording in the book) Yes, Practical No

If anyone were to try this they would be wasting more time dealing with avoiding the major field, rather than they would to just check out on it. Also there is also not may reasons not to train on the major field and work center at the same time. If you already have a C1 or up why limit your experience to just one field rather than all at one time (unless to high of traffic load is preventing this)

For my VC's hop on Center, I will monitor you and make corrections as necessary so you can get familiar with the airspace. While we are not talking to aircraft we will discuss the procedures of each TRACON.
