Problems to play video
« on: May 22, 2011, 06:34:01 AM »
I cannot play the video which shows on my ATC Training.
I use Windows XP,using the media player VLC,iTunes and Quick Times

To find the video go to www.vatusa.net  , then click on ATC training ( on the
right side of the web page ), then click ReferenceMaterial ( on top ot the web page ),
then S1Training and Issuing Clearances.
Now the video shows.

When I try to play it nothing happens.

I wonder if other people can play it and if so what is wrong with my setup ?

I would appreciate if somebody could give it a try.

Thank you

G.Worni

Hi Gubert,

Most of the videos used on the VATUSA Training Resource Center are hosted on servers NOT owned/operated by VATSIM/VATUSA. That file you list is on a server belonging to the University of North Dakota and appears to be no longer available on their web system.

We'll see if it can be retrieved and hosted somewhere else and update the link as appropriate.

May I just point out the sticky in this board which notes that Karl Kornel has actually uploaded those videos to drop.io and the code to embed them can be obtained from William Lewis, also note VATUSA as an entity also has permission to use them as MH asked them many moons ago, just in case you were wondering

Cheers!

The IO link and the authorized code was on the page, but the video would not load/play. You can see the entire code as it was included, below. If you have a solution to this, kindly share it with us.

Code: [Select]
In the following ATCast video, brought to you by [http://www.undsatca.org|SATCA] and the University of North Dakota, you will learn the basics of Clearance Delivery.

After looking on SATCA's website, They provide each video in a web viewable format as well as it being downloadable... You could use these, by using a flash video player to play the MP4 files. A great example of this is the JWPlayer, an extremely versatile Flash video player that is able to play MP4 files with ease. It would take minimal editing to the code to switch from your current Flash player to JW Flash Player and the only reason I recommend this is that I am unsure the flash player you currently use is able to play MP4 files without a hitch.. Check this space in about 10 minutes to see if my tests show it can.

Also, seeing as VATUSA obtained permission before, I'm sure that extends to the videos on their site... If not then all it means is another email to confirm

Just one note to this feature is that unless the video files are stored locally, JWPlayer will download the whole movie from SATCA's website before streaming it to your student... So downloading and saving the movies locally on the server are important for JWPlayer

http://www.undsatca.org/atcast.php (All episodes available here in MP4 Format that can be used by JWPlayer)

http://hubpages.com/hub/Embed-SWF-FLV-MP4-Flash-Video (Quick Overview of Video streaming using flash containers)

EDIT : Just looked at the VATUSA TRC after quite a while to see you had already linked to the MP4's on their own. Didn't think you had that going

Cheers!

In addition to my post above, I am currently writing a test.html which would show the code included to run something like the MP4 video from either their server or from a local server using the JWPlayer.

You will then be able to see the performance difference in having it locally available to pull the bytes it needs right now compared to having to download the whole thing.

Cheers!

IMHO the best, fastest, easiest, and most universally viewable way to post a video online is via vid.ly:  http://www.vid.ly

And vatusa would be able to reserve a vanity url for free so that all the videos could be hosted at vid.ly/vatusa.

If you aren't familiar with vid.ly, check out the video on the front page.  It is a pretty cool service, and in my experience blazing fast.

Thanks for all the help and input. Since I'm not the "official" USA3 (and that's fine with me) my ability to manipulate the site is very limited. Aside from the video that prompted this discussion, there are several others that fail to load/view, and I'm not sure they're all the same format or source. I was aware that the video wasn't stored locally and was downloading on each view ... and that's a poor setup for student learning in my opinion. However I'm not sure what options there are for local server storage, or even what the long-term plans are for the VATUSA TRC.

Tom,

I'd like to thank YOU (Something I'm sure you'll say I don't do enough ) for being open in that response, acknowledging the problem at hand is a great start to working to fix it. And I hope that the VATUSA Staff can work out a long term system that benefits all. And I'm sure that once all is said and done, the process will be more streamlined so that we don't have to send a student off-site.. It's now a matter of how and when a fix is implemented, and that can only be determined by how important the issue is, one I estimate to be slightly lower on your list then other issues.

Cheers!

It was me, it was me! Don't shoot! :-p haha

I do take responsibility for not putting those on the local web-server. To be honest, I needed a spot to put them, and drop.io was the easiest place at the time to do so, especially because it automatically gave me the video embed code. In hindsight, it was not the best of solutions (I guess i didn't expect it to go down).

As an apology gift, here is a really nice code embedder for playing videos through a flash player which also supports HTML5 with Flash fall back as a nice option http://sandbox.thewikies.com/vfe-generator/

Tom, I'll shoot an email off to SATCA's webmaster about rights to d/l and reuse their videos.  As they don't block the downloading of their content, I don't see it as a problem as long as credit is given where credit is due.  Also, pending their response, I will start downloading their videos to my local computer and if given approval to store them locally for our use, will upload them to the server.

And to add to Michael's post, a technical evaluation of our capability to host these videos on the VATUSA website is underway. I thank all of the posters for their offers of support but bottom line is, these videos (and other automation-related capabilities) must be sourced from a solid, consistently accessible resource; otherwise, the future and longevity of both the development effort and availability of the item is at risk. This directly affects the Division's (and everyone else's) efforts to support all training efforts.

Gary,

In response to your last post that they must be at a solid, accessible place... Why don't we ask them if we may, or if they can upload these videos to Youtube, something that is always accessible due to the fact Google will always have the resources to keep it up... Just a thought

Cheers!
