General Discussion / Re: New Controller Help Request
« on: January 27, 2018, 08:15:47 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I am new to VATSIM and VATUSA.  Could someone help me with Joining a Facility, Software I should use, and just an all around walkthru. I have discovered the CBT, so working on that now. Thank you for your time.

Firstly, welcome to VATUSA!  The instructions to get to your first facility are located under the "Join Us" link on the navigation bar.  Software you should use is generally part of the first few training sessions at the new facility as some use EuroScope, VRC, vSTARS, etc. so they should help you get setup once you get there.

General Discussion / Re: VAT-Spy updates

Submissions? Are we talking like people submit the updates they want to see? I would like that idea. Saves me the time and hassle of finding things and nitpicking.

Yes.

And I'd like to see someone attempt to update the UI. Something not so Windows 98 looking?

You'd need to source for that.  I don't think Ross intends to do that. And I don't think he has plans to updates/rewrite it.

I'd say multiple people working together to keep the VATSpy file updated is infinitely more powerful than one person :)

Mainly because of exposure and the fact Ross has said he'd consider updating VATSpy to track changes from the repo, which would be an added boon for all of us together!

Cheers!
Rahul

As in, actually pull from the repo natively?  That'd be pretty awesome.  Perhaps the submission process should be more streamlined, such as a PR process.

A PR process is their submission process (with an email for those who aren't comfortable with git).

The Control Room Floor / Re: Visual approach phraseology
« on: January 01, 2018, 03:04:28 PM »
I hear exchanges like this from time to time on inbound for visual approach:

ATC: "DAL123, airport at your 10-o'clock in 12 miles, report the field in sight"
DAL123: "Roger, we will report the field in sight, DAL123"
ATC: "DAL123, did you say you do have the field in sight?"
DAL123: "negative, we will let you know when we have the field in sight"

I think "We will report the field in sight" sounds too similar to "we have the field in sight" leading to inefficient communication during critical phase of flight.

My question is:

When a pilot is asked to call the field in sight, what is the correct way to communicate that "we don't have the field in sight yet but I'll let you know when we do"?

Say "Roger" or "Wilco".  Don't repeat that back, just acknowledge that you received it and will comply (roger is acknowledge, wilco is will comply).

Took a little longer than expected, but services have been restored and the server is situated for the next phase of the overhaul.

I have to agree with some of the above... the non-committal can be the biggest element on the page and you will have pilots take it out on the division/ARTCC/CCFs/controllers if someone leaves/early doesn't show.  I, like many, hop on more when I feel like it... so my schedule would be one that is never posted (unless I feel like adding another step to the sign in process).

12/1 0009 US Central: Conversion completed, except login.vatusa.net.  ULS will be switched once VATSIM approves the new server's IP address in SSO.  DNS should propagate worldwide over the next 30-45 minutes, but data is shared so nothing will be lost.

Report issues to vatusa6[at]vatusa.net.

As VATUSA transitions from a hosted service to its own server,  unavoidable down times are scheduled while the systems are moved.  I will do my best to keep them short.

11/30 23:59 US Central: Some systems may be periodically unavailable between 2359 and 0130 US Central time.  Systems affected: ULS, API, Forums and Website.

We apologize in advantage for the inconvenience this may cause.

Next exam trick: Making it so all/none of the above is always the last answer:

Which that were doable.. but people do some odd ways of writing it out so it's hard to get 100% accurate.  Better option "None of these"
