Date and time: Feb 24th, 2023 2359-0400z

The Triple Crown refers to three of the biggest races in American horse racing. The Kentucky Derby in Louisville, KY at Churchill Downs, the Preakness Stakes two weeks later at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, MD, and the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, NY (right next to JFK) three weeks after the Preakness. The winner of the Kentucky Derby traditionally will next race in the Preakness, and if he wins that race he will have a chance to win the Triple Crown with a win in the final leg, the Belmont Stakes. Through the over 150-year history of the races, only 13 horses have won the Triple Crown. It is one of the hardest accomplishments in sports, and a horse that can do it is typically worth tens of millions of dollars. (Thanks to Shane O'Neill for this awesome explanation)

The Virtual Indianapolis ARTCC, the Washington Virtual ARTCC, and the Virtual New York ARTCC invite you to join our Triple Crown Friday Night Operation that features the three cities where the races hold. That’s right! You might be put into a hold, but that might be the race!

Attention MSFS Users: The default MSFS KBWI scenery does not have runway 33L. Please install an appropriate addon scenery to avoid unwanted delays or diversions.

Events / The Longest Final: A Cherry Blossom Epilogue
« on: January 15, 2023, 10:03:52 PM »

During the Cherry Blossom event in 2020, also known as the Wild West era for VATUSA, an unnamed controller offered all the aircraft flying into DCA a tour of Fredericksburg, VA which is about 40 miles south of DCA airport before clearing them onto the approach: https://youtu.be/I0XgQr0wG64. Due to this, the Washington Virtual ARTCC has unofficially named any long finals after this controller.

This time, the Washington Virtual ARTCC invites you to revisit this historical event by departing from RIC and ORF and entering the final approach course of Runway 1 into DCA, no matter the wind.

Date and time: March 18th, 2023 2300-0300z (1900-2300E)

Join the controllers of the Virtual Washington ARTCC as we return to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport for the Cherry Blossom Fly-In on March 18th. This yearly event is held during the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC between the months of March and April. During this time Washington's cherry blossoms lining the National Mall are in full bloom and tourists from around the country come for the beautiful scenery and events.

The trees trace their roots back to 1912 when Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki donated them to the city of Washington DC as a sign of friendship. These trees were planted around the tidal basin off the National Mall and a festival in celebration of the trees was begun in 1934.

Washington National is the preferred domestic airport for commuters and tourists alike for travel, to the Washington Metro Area. The airport is only 3 miles south of the National Mall and due to this, features a variety of scenic and unique approaches/departures for aircraft departing or arriving at the airport. It features a variety of flights from North American flights ranging from regional to transcontinental. We hope there is a flight for everyone and we look forward to seeing you there.
