News / Position Posting: Fort Worth Events Coordinator

Fort Worth ARTCC is currently seeking applicants for the EC position.

Duties:
• Plans and organizes ARTCC events
• Serves as Controller-in-Charge (CIC) during ARTCC events, or selects a CIC to serve in his absence
• Works closely with virtual airlines, neighboring ARTCCs and VATSIM/VATUSA event staff
• Creates event banners and descriptions for publication and advertisement

Minimum Qualifications:
• Must be an active member of the network, in good standing
• Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
• Must be able to work in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:
• S3 rating or higher
• Experience with graphic design
• Supervisory or management experience

Fort Worth ARTCC is currently seeking applicants for the DATM position.

Duties:
• Serves as the assistant to the ATM
• Serves as the Air Traffic Manager in the absence of the ATM
• Oversees the day to day operations of the ARTCC
• Manages the VATUSA and ARTCC rosters
• Welcomes new members to the ARTCC
• Other duties as assigned by the Air Traffic Manager and/or VATUSA Staff

Minimum Qualifications:
• Must be an active member of the network, in good standing
• Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
• Must be able to work in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:
• Previous training staff (mentor, instructor, etc.) experience
• Supervisory or management experience
• Real world aviation experience

Matt, I was using our airports as an example because I didn’t want to call out specific facilities. DFW is the only airport that has ground radar, so it’s the only one that I would want my controllers ensuring that planes have mode C on and proper codes.

I’m more concerned with the fact that somebody at OKC calls for taxi at Atlantic (using OKC as an example to avoid calling out any particular facility), the controller’s first response shouldn’t be “squawk mode C”. They obviously don’t understand the purpose, and are doing this just because somebody told them to.

Perhaps I should’ve titled this differently. As I keep talking about this, it brings up a lot of other “VATSIMisms” that really need to go away. The only reason these actions continue is because people are taught TO do them, not WHY they’re doing them.

I know what the AIM says. At work, we keep the transponder on ALT the whole time. I'm not trying to discuss what mode the transponder should be set to on the ground. I want controllers to stop telling pilots what to do with their transponders on the ground at smaller airports. This stems for a lack of proper instruction and I see it daily on the network.

I've noticed an increase in the number of controllers telling pilots to "squawk mode c" while on the ground. While this would be correct at airports that have ground radar, I continue to hear this at airports that are without such equipment. This shows that the controller does not understand why we have pilots squawk mode c on the ground in specific situations.

Many large airports have ground radar which allows the controllers to monitor aircraft and vehicle movements on the taxiways and runways. A quick glance at the airport diagram is the easiest way to know if your airport is equipped. For example, DFW's diagram says, "ASDE-X in use. Operate transponders with altitude reporting mode and ADS-B (if equipped) enabled on all airport surfaces." A similar statement is also provided in the ATIS. Controllers at an airport like OKC wouldn't care, or even know, what mode the transponder was in because they are looking outside, not at a ground radar display.

I'm sure some of you have already copied the VATSIM CoC line that says pilots shouldn't squawk standby on the network. While this is true, it isn't the controllers job to enforce CoC. Changing the little dot to an asterisk on VRC isn't going to change the way you control at these airports anyway.

Why am I complaining about something that doesn't really matter in the long run? I just want to make sure the students are being taught properly. Telling a student to do something with out explanation isn't adequate instruction. They should understand why planes on the ground at DFW need to enable altitude reporting, while planes can have it on whatever mode they want at OKC.

Hopefully some of you will agree with me and we can do a better job of instructing students in the future.

Duties:
• Serves as the lead instructor and the manager of the ARTCC training department
• Reports to the ATM and VATUSA Training Director (VATUSA3)
• Manages and oversees a staff of Instructors (I1) and Mentors
• Maintains up to date training materials and an efficient training program for controllers and students
• Ensures a fun learning environment for all controllers
• Other duties as assigned by the Air Traffic Manager and/or VATUSA Staff

Minimum Qualifications:
• Currently hold a rating of Controller (C1) or higher
• Previous training staff (mentor, instructor, etc.) experience
• Must be an active member of the network, in good standing
• Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
• Must be able to work in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:
• Current/previous ZFW mentor or instructor
• Supervisory or management experience
• Real world aviation experience

VFR-on-top is using both IFR and VFR rules. The reg that I quoted says that you must be operating under IFR, not conducting an IFR operation (such as VFR-on-top).

Since you're being picky, you must follow VFR weather minimums while VFR-on-top. Where can I find the VFR weather minimums for class A? There aren't any because you cannot operate VFR in class A airspace.

Anyways, why the heck does it even matter whether it's "legal" or not. You won't get it.

Sure, the JO can say that, but the JO isn't law nor does it require the rulemaking process.  It seems like an interesting case where the law says its okay, but the FAA is telling you not to do it anyways.  I can see why it'd be frowned upon operationally, but I'm curious to understand why the JO takes that position more than "because it does."

91.135 Operations in Class A Airspace.

Except as provided in paragraph (d) of this section, each person operating an aircraft in Class A airspace must conduct that operation under instrument flight rules (IFR) and in compliance with the following:

(a) Clearance. Operations may be conducted only under an ATC clearance received prior to entering the airspace.

(b) Communications. Unless otherwise authorized by ATC, each aircraft operating in Class A airspace must be equipped with a two-way radio capable of communicating with ATC on a frequency assigned by ATC. Each pilot must maintain two-way radio communications with ATC while operating in Class A airspace.

(c) Equipment requirements. Unless otherwise authorized by ATC, no person may operate an aircraft within Class A airspace unless that aircraft is equipped with the applicable equipment specified in §91.215, and after January 1, 2020, §91.225.

(d) ATC authorizations. An operator may deviate from any provision of this section under the provisions of an ATC authorization issued by the ATC facility having jurisdiction of the airspace concerned. In the case of an inoperative transponder, ATC may immediately approve an operation within a Class A airspace area allowing flight to continue, if desired, to the airport of ultimate destination, including any intermediate stops, or to proceed to a place where suitable repairs can be made, or both. Requests for deviation from any provision of this section must be submitted in writing, at least 4 days before the proposed operation. ATC may authorize a deviation on a continuing basis or for an individual flight.

Haha, yes. As someone from Ohio, I initially thought this was something between Ohio University and Ohio State University (OU vs. OSU)(or KUNI vs. KOSU in terms of airports). Much to my dismay it was actually UO and the other OSU...

The University of Oklahoma is and always has been OU. The only OU thats relevant in college football ;)

We should've just called the event "Bedlam" to avoid any confusion for you all from up north.
