Events / Re: [30MAY] Light Up America!

Hey!
Will the point count only for the arrival airport? Lets say I am flying from PHNL to KLAX, will I get 6 points?

Thanks in advance!
Bar Rodoy,
Vatsim Israel

You only receive points for the first landing in each center. In your example, flying HNL-LAX, you would only receive 1 point for your landing in LAX.

While the event does not dictate where you can fly, the spirit of the event is to experience as many controllers as you can that day  :)

VATUSA is excited to announce the return of Light Up America on Saturday May 30, 2015. This event will feature all 22 ARTCCs within VATUSA for 10 hours. 4 hours of which the entire continental USA will be lit up with Air Traffic Control at the Centers as well as Major Approach and Tower facilities. Enjoy uninterrupted ATC during the event. Simply fly between any airports as much you would like and enjoy the quality ATC Services that VATUSA facilities pride themselves on.

Every facility will be on for at least a 6 hour time frame with the East Coast facilities starting up at 12:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time. As the event progresses, the additional centers will log on at noon in their local time zone. By 3:00 PM all the centers will be online for you. As the event winds down, facilities will be encouraged to remain online, but must remain online until at least 6:00 PM local time. As they begin to close down, we will extend the event even further west with the Anchorage, Honolulu, and Oakland Oceanic control facilities coming online to work your Hawaii and Alaska flights! It will be a great day of flying for you.

We have lots of prizes available to those pilots that do a bit of exploring around the country during the event.

General Discussion / FSX vs FS9

Thank you Matthew and Ryan. I was going to go with FS9 as there are MANY more aircraft to download, however, I am putting money in this as well. USA Scenery, aircraft payware, active sky etc. so, once I choose, I need to stick with it. Ryan, you were talking about the possibility of the new flight simulator coming out, we will have to see what that entails. Right now, the only reason I am running FS9 is that they have the aircraft I want, such as "North Central Airlines Convair 580 and DC-9-31, were FSX does not. But I suppose I better go with FSX just for that reason of a new flight simulator coming out. I wish I could pay someone to do a North Central DC-9-31 or 51 package for FSX...lol In FS9 right now, every time I put a new aircraft in the folder, the next time I start Flight Sm I receive another error "Scenery.cfg error invalid remote scenery path in the scenery error 038 , 039 ,040" etc but it eventually will start up right. I appreciate your time guys and thanks again!!

No convair. But Cooksky nailed the DC9-30 and I have a North Central paint for it.

General Discussion / FSX vs FS9
« on: November 28, 2014, 02:52:59 AM »
If you're going for a clean restart then I would actually say neither. FS9 is starting to decompose in its grave and FSX is freshly buried.

Unfortunately for us, there are not many good options right now. X-Plane 10 is the most current public use simulator but it has its own problems and few developers have put an even fewer amount of product out there. P3D and P3D 2 are amazing engines, but are technically not for public use even though a loophole is getting massively exploited.

That being said, you are almost required to invest in an antiqued platform and FSX would be the one I choose. It was hard to walk away from FS9 myself, but today's entry level computers can handle FSX fairly well. The current crop of addons has reached and perhaps exceeded FS9 in terms of realism and quality, not to mention that most developers have abandoned the FS9 platform for future development. I'd say the old girl (FSX) has at least 5 years left in her.

Events / [IDEA] Transcontinental fly-in
« on: November 06, 2014, 09:17:36 PM »

Hmm... I like this idea. To be honest, it kind of reminds me of Light Up America. LUA isn't necessarily for transcontinental flights, however, because all of the US is pretty much fully staffed, it gives the opportunity for transcontinental flights with full ATC coverage and a lot of pilots use the event for that purpose. Regardless, if VATUSA wants to host an event specifically for transcontinental and use the same concept of lighting up all of the US, I'd totally be in. Sounds like fun!

Light up America does not specifically prefer transcon flights, but we find that more often than not everyone starts at JFK/BOS/IAD etc and goes to LAX/SFO/SEA. etc

It's a bit of a shame really, that all the great facilities in between see primarily overflight traffic. We tried offering incentives to flying to other airports last year with limited success.

Just for the record, I think it's actually Worldflight (http://www.worldflight.com.au)

Worldflight was a separate event from this.

Apparently Cross the Pacific WB 2014 is tonight, and many pilots first heard of it within the past hour on Vattastic.  Pouring over the flight sim community boards, I found no mention of this event aside from the page on the VATUSA event calendar.  Why was this event not advertised anywhere else?

I wish I had a better answer for you on this. Events such as Cross the Pacific or Cross the Pond require an immense amount of coordination and lots of time to organize.

VATUSA did their part to advertise this event and provide some controllers for the Oceanic portion. Unfortunatley it seems as though the ball was dropped in many areas elsewhere.

This will be a learning opportunity for everyone involved with Cross the Pacific and will lead to an improved event in the future.

The Control Room Floor / C1 Controller seeks I1 in ARTCC

This whole post has turned into a troll post, when I ONLY WANTED SERIOUS RESPONSES....

Allow me to be candid here. I'm not as nice as the others in this thread, but sometimes the truth needs to sting.

Your first post raised a lot of red flags. There are many "ratings chasers" on the network who want to get that next rating because they think it's cool. Your first post raised that suspicion because you are disappointed that your facility did not select you as an instructor and that was the sole cause for transfer.  That is the telltale sign of a rating chaser.

All controllers that reach C1 are on the same level, and that includes those that have C3's back when they were awarded. ANY rating above C1/C3 is a temporary assignment that gives you special privileges on the network whether that be instructing, supervising, or admin. As other have said, it is a job to have those ratings not some mark of pedigree. An instructor has to double his VATSIM time or end up not controlling much at all because all of it is spent training new students. An instructor is subject to massive burnout after teaching the S1 rating material for the 500th time to a candidate that is not going to pursue the controlling side of the house. For every 30 S1 I put though as an instructor one or maybe two would reach the finish line as a C1. Talk about seeing return on your time investment.

So an instructor is a different breed, they have a great attitude, genuinely love the network, and want to see it and their student's succeed. They are not doing it just to click the I1 box on VRC.

So to be perfectly blunt. Maybe the reason you haven not been selected as an instructor is evidenced by your attitude to the very serious, helpful and cordial responses to your initial post. They are just not giving you the answer you want to hear. The best staff members and instructors are called to a position. The worst ones seek a position.

You do not want to open this discussion up again. Let it unrest in peace.

The Flight Deck / FSX Addons

What Matt said, but for weather you can't go wrong with Opus. If you're into realistic flight planning then check out PFPX.

Opus is great and it is what I use with REX textures, but will move to ASN soon because it does what opus can and more.

As far as the cost of addons, welcome to the wonderful world of them. The FSX base program you will find is the cheapest thing in your library

The Flight Deck / FSX Addons
« on: August 15, 2014, 01:58:58 PM »
Quote from: Richard Speir
Hello everyone,

I'm interested in getting some addons for FSX, I've done some basic google searches but I'm skeptical about some of the hits I've got. I've heard that with such a niche market, there's quite a few scams out there. So, I figured I'd come here and ask for your opinions about some trusted sites to get addons. At the moment there is a catch though, I just dropped $300 on hardware, so I'm mostly interested in decent free-ware products, but I will take pay-ware suggestions into consideration for the future.

I'm a computer science student, so programming is something I'm good at (editing sector files is easy, for example). However, I'm mostly involved in software development, I'm not a graphic designer/artist, so when people talk about meshes etc., it's a bit over my head. Any insight into what the addons are actually changing would be appreciated.

A few things I'm interested in/my play style:
  • Weather - Better looking and currency (I.E real world)
  • I fly mostly in Florida - With school taking most of my time, I enjoy short flights from KJAX to KMIA (and back), sometimes with stops in KMCO. Scenery for these airports would be nice, or is there a Florida package out there?
  • Embraer ERJ-145 - Cockpit functionality/ability to start cold and dark. I've seen a video on the Feelthere product, it seems great. If I understand correctly, it comes with the 135/145/145XR. However, at €32.35 (from fsx-download, not sure if it's a good site), I'm only getting 3 new aircraft and it costs more than I paid for FSX (worth it?). I'm really only interested in the 145, is there a decent free-ware alternative?.
  • Anything else you guys suggest - Free-ware or pay-ware.
I'm not asking for anyone to do the grunt work of searching sites with thousands of addons to find what I'm looking for. Like I said, I just need a point in the right direction to sites that you guys trust for this kind of stuff.

Thanks, as always!

-Rich

Weather - Active Sky Next
Airplane - Feelthere ERJ is not the greatest out there but it is your only option for that series. It's not awful bit there are better developers out there.
Scenery - MegaScenery Earth Florida complete state. Taxi2Gate KMCO. FlyTampa KMIA.
Other- anything by PMDG, FlightBeam, or FS Dreamteam.

Avoid - anything by blueprint
