The Control Room Floor / Interesting ATC tidbet
« on: January 03, 2011, 02:15:35 PM »
This is an interesting RW ATC article.  As a CFI, I would agree that ATC mistakes appear to be up.  I have noticed over the past year the number of trainees working at my local tracon seems to be way up as well.  I have personally had 2 incidents in the past month where ATC had a loss of separation while in IMC on an approach and I had to be vectored out and resequenced.

"ATC errors up 51% in 2010, but accidents remain at all-time low
Mistakes by air traffic controllers increased 51% in 2010 as the FAA seeks software upgrades for collision warning systems on more than 9,000 aircraft. Critics say the spike in ATC errors is the result of insufficient training for new employees brought in to cope with an expected wave of retirements, but FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt has stressed that commercial airline fatalities remain near an all-time low and that the U.S. has an "incredibly safe system." FAA officials also contend that the higher mistake statistics are the result of a new initiative that encourages controllers to self-report their errors without fear of reprisals. "

The Control Room Floor / ZME NOW HIRING
« on: December 08, 2010, 06:44:25 PM »
ZME is now hiring!  We are actively looking to hire S3 and C1 rated controllers.  Why not come check us out?  We are home to Memphis International....the world headquarters for FedEX.  Come join in on the action.

The Control Room Floor / Vis Ranges and VRC
« on: May 14, 2010, 05:19:18 PM »
So I have this problem where in times of high traffic load I get kicked from the server.  It has been suggested that I "tweak" my vis range to cut down on the traffic my session "sees" that is not in my airspace.

I have also been looking at small but multiple vis centers.  Has anyone done that?  I read a post that adding vis centers (more than 1) doubles your bandwidth with each one.

I set up 4 vis centers the overlap but the range is much smaller as to only  overlap the airspace around Memphis just a little.  I am wondering if I just mad matters worse from a bandwidth perspective.

Thoughts.....

General Discussion / Capt Sim 757
« on: April 01, 2010, 03:56:17 PM »
Ok...I finally broke down and bought my first payware airplane.  The Capt Sim 757.  The 757 is my favoriate airplane to fly in so I figured what the heck...its on sale.

Based on all the reccomendations from people "everyone" said I had to buy this airplane.  I have to agree....its great.

The only down side is the manual.  I am having a hard time really learning where everthing is.  Anyone know of some other good training resources for this airplane?

Thanks!

General Discussion / Many Thanks
« on: March 21, 2010, 02:39:26 PM »
I just wanted to take a moment and send a public "thank you" to VATSIM supervisor Mike Sweeney for helping out vZME last night.

Atlanta was hosting their very popular Atlanta Live event.  As their next-door neighbor, Memphis saw a large spike in traffic within our airspace as we provided en-route services onto the ATL arrivals.

I have never seen so much traffic showing up on my scope and apparently neither had my computer...as I struggled to maintain a connection to the network.  I tried many different servers to no avail.

Mike gave me some great pointers on how to massage my visibility range and center to exclude the lion's share of the traffic inside ATL's airspace that I didn't need to know about.  After a series of adjustments between visibility range and center, I was able to find the right combination that only included a small overlap of neighboring ARTCC's and only included my heavy traffic load.

With upset pilots, a disgusted, stressed and annoyed controller (me) sometimes the easy solution just slips right past you.

Thanks Mike.  These pointers really helped and made my connection for the rest of the night more stable.

General Discussion / One Six Right

I just noticed that the great aviation documentary "One Six Right" has been added to HuLu.

This is just a great movie on not only the history of KVNY but general aviation in general.

General Discussion / PIREPs
« on: September 29, 2009, 08:23:42 PM »
I was curious what everyone's take on PIREPs is.  Does anyone try to incorporate real reported PIREPs into any flight advisories for pilots?  The NOAA ADDS site has access to all of the PIREPS that are submitted by pilots.  While yes I know a lot of pilots within VATSIM may not have adequte weather rendering engines to take advantage of the real world weather..often pilots want to give me a PIREP which is great...but other than write it down for me...it really adds no value to the network as a whole.  This kinda got me thinking.

Has any thought been put into a PIREP system for VATSIM?  Something that would integrate with the various radar clients I think would increase the level of realism that is provided to the pilots (and controllers).
