General Discussion / Re: VATUSA sponsored event (1 JUL 22)
« on: July 02, 2022, 10:55:33 PM »
To be honest, I did the post here to draw attention to this fact because in the past sending feedback to zma have fallen on deaf ears, or blind eyes.  They were there and available, they knew about it and chose not to staff up.  I know this to be true, because I know people that control in Miami.

So...you posted in a forum browsed mainly by division controllers/staff for all to see about how a facility didn't staff up for you on a holiday weekend, and expected what outcome? To be honest, I don't think this course of action will paint your or your VA in a positive light and encourage people to staff up for you in the future.

It was very disappointing and frankly unacceptable.
Wow so unacceptable that people decided to not spend their Friday evening controlling fake planes.
I am so confused why people get burnt out by this, totally not people who act like this, not at all.

Friday evening on a holiday weekend*

If it was a "management issue and should be addressed" why did you take to this (public) forum instead of sending an email to division/ZMA brass?

Regardless of what was agreed, the event is clearly a tongue-in-cheek nose-thumbing to the new FNO guidelines, which were instituted to *prevent* all FNO traffic from being focused onto a single airfield.

Yes, let's funnel an unrealistic amount of traffic into one of the 3 NY Metro airports during convective weather season and just hope for the best.

I'd better make sure someone's on ZMP so we can start creating 50 MIT for JFK over Iowa...

Iowa is scenic this time of year. A couple extra minutes can't hurt.

Yeah, I could go for Iowa. Iowa couple beers to myself, that is.

Hey y'all. Couple things to keep in mind before judging this event. First, ZNY is breaking a grand total of...ZERO rules!! This has been approved by all of the necessary people and organizations, including VATUSA. Not to mention, it's not a single-field FNO—ALB and ORF are BOTH part of the event. We are, without a doubt, following the "rules implemented and agreed upon by every ARTCC." We all know this'll be a fun one.

Honestly, there’s one word I can think of to describe this event: awesome.

Mind kept, still judging. It won't be fun when we have to give N90 60MIT on the CAMRN....

Technically the LOA is just to hand off to ZNY at the lowest usable FL. If you hand them a stack at HOGGS, isn't the top guy at the lowest usable FL?

Not sure why the focus has always been on attrition at OBS/S1 ranks. You're losing out on perfectly good mentors/instructors when you let S3+ controllers walk away from the division without any sort of exit interview. Keep those people around and maybe facilities wouldn't be begging for visitor restrictions when their training programs can barely keep up with the demand for home controllers.

Don't know why we need to be comparing facilities either, speaking as the head of a facility that's relatively middle-of-the-pack. Nastygrams from RMs about encouraging people to staff more when a healthy bulk of controllers have real lives to attend to (even more now that COVID restrictions have largely been lifted in the US) shouldn't even be a consideration on a network that exists as a hobby. Keeping your own internal analytics is fine, but instead of releasing them maybe consider reaching out to those facilities toward the bottom of the list and seeing if you, as the division, and as facilities' liaisons to the BoG, can do anything to help increase those numbers.

The Flight Deck / Re: PRM approach?
« on: May 12, 2021, 07:57:17 PM »
1) Yes - at the airports where PRM approaches are published, they are routinely used when traffic warrants. I have flown PRM approaches at KATL regularly. I believe they are also common at KSFO.

SFO actually had its PRM approaches deleted within the last few cycles, and the LDA that they used alongside it is gone now. It required some really specific weather minimums that didn't occur often so .308s were more practical when it wasn't VMC.

I'm Canadian and I'm already scared of geese, this just makes me even more afraid.

Please take your geese back.

Sincerely,
Anyone who has ever met a Canadian Goose in the NJ or NY area.

If you got a problem with Canada Gooses, you got a problem with me, and I suggest you let that one marinate!
