I am pleased to announce that the next Deputy Air Traffic Manager for the Chicago ARTCC will be Mike Fries. Mike has held various staff roles since joining VATSIM in 2001 and was most recently the Deputy Training Administrator in Seattle. His combined experience on the Network and a 10-year career with the FAA allow Mike to bring new perspectives and ideas to the ZAU team. Congratulations, Mike!

Deputy Air Traffic Manager

Duties
The DATM reports to the Air Traffic Manager and assists in management of the ARTCC. The DATM functions as a senior ARTCC staff member and is responsible for overseeing daily activities of the ARTCC.
•   Attends periodic meetings, as necessary.
•   Maintains an active online presence within the ZAU ARTCC and on the VATSIM network.
•   Supervises assigned personnel providing guidance, coaching, and training where applicable.
•   Assists in roster management by processing leave requests and verifying controller currency.
•   Helps draft changes to agreements, procedures, and policy.
•   Helps direct staffing assignments and restrictions. 
•   Frequently checks and responds to emails and contacts in a timely manner.
•   Assumes role of representative for the ZAU ARTCC and ATM when assigned, acts accordingly.
•   Assumes the duties of ATM during periods of leave or absence.

Requirements
The successful candidate must:
•   Be a member in good standing
•   Be a member of the ZAU ARTCC, or willing to transfer upon selection

Training Administrator

Duties

The TA reports to the Air Traffic Manager and VATUSA Training Director, functions as a senior ARTCC staff member and oversees/directs the operation of the training program. 
•   Attends periodic meetings, as necessary.
•   Maintains an active online presence within the ZAU ARTCC and on the VATSIM network.
•   Responsible for curriculum development including courses, classes, simulation scenarios, exams, and all associated media/material.
•   Manages training staff/appointments providing guidance, coaching and correction where needed
•   Ensures ZAU training program meets ATM goals and current VATUSA, VATNA, VATSIM policies.
•   Responsible for student progression / approves rating promotions.
•   Helps draft changes to Training Order.
•   Represents ZAU ARTCC and ATM to VATUSA training staff; acts accordingly.
•   Quickly and accurately responds to training inquiries from students, mentors, and instructors.
•   Frequently checks and responds to emails and contacts in a timely manner.
•   Assumes the duties of instructor.

Requirements

The successful candidate must:
•   Be a member in good standing
•   Be a member of the ZAU ARTCC, or willing to transfer upon selection
•   Hold a VATSIM Enroute Controller (C1) rating or higher
•   Have held an I1 rating for at least 30 days at any given time
•   Have an extensive knowledge of US airspace, air traffic control procedures and regulations
•   Be familiar with, at all times, the current VATSIM GRP and all applicable VATUSA and VATNA policies and changes
•   Maintain active status by logging minimum number of hours in accordance with ARTCC policy
•   Log a minimum of 5 hours of training per month (or position related duties)
•   Possess excellent written and oral communication skills
•   Be able to work well in a team-oriented environment

Please join me in congratulating Rey Lopez as he takes on the role of Deputy Air Traffic Manager at the Kansas City ARTCC effective December 3, 2018. Rey has served the ZKC ARTCC since the early 2000s and most recently served as the Training Administrator just a few short years ago.

I want to thank the outgoing DATM, Ryan Pitt, for all of his assistance during his term in office. Ryan was essential to getting many ARTCC documents updated, coordinating events, and training students. Best of luck in your future endeavors, Ryan!

Congratulations to Brett Jones for being selected as the newest Events Coordinator at Kansas City. Brett has risen through the ranks of controlling at vZKC over the last year and has shown consistent interest in getting more involved in the hobby. He plans to apply his real-world aviation experience and countless hours of piloting and controlling on the network to move vZKC forward.
