News / Re: Wes Miles ZHQ Retirement

Wes, thank you for all that you've done for VATUSA over the years.  Wishing you the best in your retirement!  Maybe you'll do what I did -- take a year off and then jump back in! :)

The Control Room Floor / Re: Becoming ATC
« on: January 23, 2022, 10:53:34 PM »
Yes, our expectations are much higher of ATC than "just take a written test and go control."  It takes quite a bit of learning and experience to be a good controller.  Part of that process is training sessions that lead to certifications that actually mean something.  That's the bar we set on this network and in this community.  It's not for everyone, and that's OK.

^ This :)  Yep, as much as some people think BoG isn't paying attention, I can assure you that we talk about pilot quality, feedback mechanisms, balance, preventing against abuse, and tradeoffs quite often.  And as much as some people think all the BoG cares about is quantity over quality, I can assure you that can't be farther from the truth!

Simon was just appointed in his role, and has read this with significant interest.  He is new to the conversation at the BoG level, but is jumping in with both feet.  I, and many of us, look forward to what will come.

I'm guessing you're guessing right....  I'll admit though, I'll miss the current logo ;)  (old sentimental fart speaking ;) )

Events / Re: Assume there is an Open Mic Night tonight?
« on: May 01, 2021, 05:22:25 AM »
Not from my perspective.  An empty slot on the calendar means no event.  I just guess I couldn't get my old-school brain wrapped around no event on a Friday night :)  Now I'm recalibrated :)   Don't mind me, I'll just shuffle back to my dusty old rocking chair in the corner.  Where's my afghan?  :) :)

Events / Assume there is an Open Mic Night tonight?
« on: April 30, 2021, 08:31:04 AM »
Quick question -- there's nothing on the calendar for FNO tonight -- so I assume it's an Open Mic Night, but you know what assume means... :)  Is that correct?  Would there normally be something on the calendar to specify Open Mic Nights, or are we no longer doing that?  Thanks!

General Discussion / RIP Richard Green 810012
« on: February 14, 2021, 09:09:15 PM »
Sadly, Richard Green (810012), one of VATSIM's first members, has lost his battle with cancer and passed away.  Richard had served as a VATUSA staff member from VATSIM's inception through 2006, as a VATSIM Supervisor, as a founding member of the team that organized the weekly VATUSA Friday Night Ops (FNO event), and VATSIM's Cross the Pond events.

Richard's love for VATSIM helped ignite his passion to fly in the real world, becoming an airline pilot in 2007.

Richard will be missed.

Congratulations on your appointments.  You have all been entrusted with a great responsibility -- to grow this hobby by making it better and more enjoyable for all of our members, ATC, Pilots and Both.  I wish you all the best of luck and success in making this vision a reality.  It is so great to see VATUSA getting better, day by day!

The Flight Deck / Re: Back into VATSIM After a Long Break ... A Few Q's
« on: November 07, 2020, 11:41:26 PM »
A couple of additional notes/clarifications to the above

1.  Per AIM 4-1-20(a)3:  Transponder and ADS-B operations on the ground. Civil and military aircraft should operate with the transponder in the altitude reporting mode (consult the aircraft's flight manual to determine the specific transponder position to enable altitude reporting) and ADS-B Out transmissions enabled at all airports, any time the aircraft is positioned on any portion of the airport movement area. This includes all defined taxiways and runways.

3. I like to look up the citypair using Flightaware (https://flightaware.com/live/findflight/kxxx/kyyy (where kxxx is your departure airport ID and kyyy is your arrival airport ID)), select an appropriate flight for airline/equipment, and then look at the gate information.
