The Control Room Floor / Houston Holding Points

My thoughts:

1) Tough to implement on the controller side.

2) Hard for pilots to understand what you are talking about when many of them don't even use taxiway maps.

3) I fail to see the benefit gained by implementing this.

I don't mean to rain on your parade - simply scratching my head wondering what the point is.

At some point "as real as it gets" goes too far in the virtual world and IMHO this is one of those occassions.

Ian, exactly, and Dave more exactly... lol

On behalf of American Virtual Airlines, I would like to thank Jose Suarez, and his entire crew for manning up DFW and providing us the opportunity to conduct our annual "Birthday Bash", with "Real Hub Ops" out of KDFW, it was our 9th birthday, and the Controllers there made it an outstanding event for us.  Everyone had a great experience... great job guys!

Yeah, it looks like an upside down little "n"

Perhaps we should ask ourselves WHY does VATUSA need to implement this change.  Does VATUSA really need to update anything?

"Because that's how it is done in the real world" really isn't a valid answer.

Jason Vodnansky

Jason, I'm gonna have to disagree with your post on a technicality, it IS a valid answer to the question, but that may not be a valid reason for some

What a pain. You know how much material has to be updated for this just on VATSIM alone? I can only imagine how the real world companies feel (King Schools, Sportys, ASA). This is worse than the 2005 position and hold regulation.

Oh yeah, all the GND up material... plus, I would imagine each ARTCC should hold some type of one time training update for all it's controllers rated GND and UP...definately a time consuming chore, maybe that's why it's no in effect until the end of June.

Jeeeze Bo, why don't you tell us how you really feel.    lol

But I bet it felt good getting that off your chest.  Any other warnings about how VATSIM "represents everything that is wrong with the Amercian way of life" that you think a newbie like me should know??  I mean since you're on roll.......

Ira

Ira, keep your panties on, he didn't say that VATSIM itself represents everything that is wrong with the American way of life, he was referring to the egotistical, title grabbing, back stabbing, lying people that he has encountered along the way.... I'm thinking anyway, correct me if I'm wrong Bo.

Also, keep in mind, that it is his opinion, which we are all entitled to.

Point taken. It's just a shame that our BoG has to worry about that...

What's really a shame is all the people out here that make them feel that way.

So, here's a thought provoking question:

If you are dancing to a song, and you're not getting it right, do you just forget it and move on to a different song, or keep dancing to that same song until you get it right?

Gary, that is exactly the answer I would have thought you would have, and exactly the answer I would have if the circumstances were the same.  Every time I have been put in a position of authority (r/w and vatsim) I make decisions based on either my personal knowledge, or interpretations of directives from higher authority.  If my decision is wrong, I own up to it, because it was mine.  I know some have said this is not the military, and blah blah blah the chain of command, but I'm here to tell you, if the chain of command is used properly, both up and down the chain, then problems/situations get resolved (most of the time).  Of course, as with anything, you are not going to please 100% of the population, but if the decision is made with the best interest of the majority, then it was the right decision, in my book.

To Matt,  these forums, in my opinion keep people on their toes, sure you get some repetitive threads, asking the same things, but if you look at just about any thread, it's already been brought up at some point in time.  If you are referring to threads that create some thought provoking questions/ideas and you don't like or agree with them, my recommendation is just not to read them.

I completely agree with this. Can't we say that probably more than 95% of pilots would rather have ATC than no ATC? What's the point of flying without ATC (besides flying in group flights and the like)? I mean, isn't that the whole point of VATSIM? To get the full experience?

I think it goes pretty much without saying that the majority of pilots would prefer ATC.  It's the quality of ATC that sometimes pushes pilots away, but that's why the ARTCC's have the pilot feedback, so if you feel you received sub-standard service, take the time to give the ATM,DATM,TA feedback on how their controllers are doing and then they can work on correcting those things that are sub-standard.

As far as the handing out of certifications, I for one went through the training, did the OTS's failed and retook written exams, that's how you learn.  There are some out there though, that want to be spoon fed everything, don't want to look things up, don't want to study, and expect to get the next level of cert, either globally or locally.  How do you fix that??  Talk to their parents I guess, because you can try on here til you're blue in the face and you won't get through to some... it's called work ethic, and I guess if you've never worked, it's hard to have that ethic.

Please note that I said some...

I agree, I love comming to VATSIM to relax after a hard day and enjoy myself.  I love that we aim to be "As real as it gets" but we also have to remember the above.  Sometimes we can train controllers in the basics of the position and then experience and perfection will come after years of doing it.  Even when I became a Center rated controller, I didn't know everything and my skill improve every single day that I control.  I feel that we need to find a balance between real and fun..if we make it so hard it won't be fun to the majority and they will stop doing their training and find another hobby.  My 0.02 anyways.

I've said that all along, that I come here after to work, to unwind, have a little fun, either control or fly.  I appreciate the "realism" aspect of this hobby, but I DON'T have to keep telling myself that this is a HOBBY, I know that.  The realism part I see is bringing up a chart, flying the SID/STAR, and hopefully it's current, I subscribe to Navigraph, so I have the latest AIRAC all the time, and that's about as real as I'm concerned with as far as flying, that and the addon aircraft and scenery and such.  But I've said before, I think some, feel this is a stepping stone, or training platform for people to come to on their way to becoming r/w ATC or pilots.  Where I see this as educational, and maybe even an advantage over someone who has never done any of this before, I don't see it as a training platform.  I think someone else said this also, that we as controllers need to remember, that without pilots, we have no job.  I've always told my students, treat the pilots like you would want to be treated, remembering, everyone has a starting point, and from the beginning it's about learning to get better.

Right on Tommy!

As others have said:

**OPINION ALERT**

It appears to me that alot of people are taking what Jason is asking out of context.  I'm reading this as he is asking if a question of policy is asked on this or anyother forum, and is answered by someone who is put in a position of authority over him, would said answer be, for lack of other terms, admissible, let's say in a DCRM inquiry?  I don't read this as him attacking any specific policy, but referencing policies that have come under question here or in other forums.  Look at his first post....the one that started this thread.

And before anyone starts throwing stones at me, Jason and I AREN'T "BUDS", I don't know Jason from Adam, I just think he is presenting some interesting questions, and I am hanging around to see the answers.  And sometimes posting my opinions.

The answer in my opinion is you talk with your "chain of command", and get it in writing. This thread I predict will have a shelf life of a few hours before it turns into another pitchfork and torch fest against the BoG/EC.

We get it Jason, you and a few others are upset with the BOG/EC... Why do you have to throw more chaos into VATUSA with these threads and stirring of the pot. Let's get things fixed around here because of the voids left behind by the departing admin., and revisit these hotbed issues in a week or two when we have an administration in place.

I do not agree with everything that Jason posts on these forums, however, he does ask/present some valid questions.  IF everyone sat back and acted as puppets, and just said "yes sir, whatever you say sir", then the questions he brings up would never be answered.  And remember, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and if you don't agree with his, or anyone elses for that matter, be a man, and agree to disagree.
