News / New Deputy Division Directors

Congrats to Brandon Wening as he will be moving into the Deputy Division Director – ATS role VATUSA2. Brandon was the Denver ATM and as you know previously served the Division as Support Services Manager. Brandon understands the pace and expectations going forward. I am confident that he has the drive and enthusiasm to help us build on our professional relationships between the Division and sub-division to get stuff done!


Congrats to Shane Friedman as he will be moving into the Deputy Division Director – Support Services Manager role VATUSA4. Shane most recently served the Division as Staff Development Manager. Through that role he has gotten the ball rolling with the new ATM hiring process along with working with distress facilities in need of staff and working with junior ARTCC staff throughout the division.

Position: Air Traffic Manager
Location: Cleveland ARTCC (ZOB)
Time Commitment: 4 to 8 hours per week+, and required monthly controller hours to maintain facility membership
Supervisor: Deputy Division Director - Air Traffic Services (ATS)

The Air Traffic Manager (ATM) is the overseer of all ARTCC operations. The ATM's primary responsibility is to assure the smooth operation of the ARTCC, alongside with drafting and implementing ARTCC policies and LOAs. The ATM is the primary point of contact for the Region Manager and will sit on the ATM Advisory board for the duration of their tenure.
 
Main responsibilities:

  • Manage the ARTCC
  • Handle Transfer/Visiting requests
  • Maintain the ARTCC roster
  • Communicate regularly with the RM
  • Manage the community
  • Develop/Grow the ARTCC in alignment with division goals
  • Oversee the TA and DATM directly
  • Implement and maintain ARTCC policy alongside the DATM
  • Manage an active staff of DATM, TA, EC, FE, and WM

Potential responsibilities (based on ARTCC needs):

  • VATUSA Workgroups
  • ATM Advisory board development
  • Assisting the Junior and Senior staff in all aspects
  • Community moderation/development

Requirements for the role:

  • Active member of VATSIM in good standing
  • Ability to maintain ARTCC activity requirement standards
  • Strong understanding of the WM, EC, FE, TA, and DATM roles
  • Obtained a rating of C1
  • Ability to manage a team of at least 5
  • Positive attitude with the time commitment necessary to lead the ARTCC
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred qualifications for this role:

  • Familiarity with the ARTCC
  • VATUSA Member
  • Strong understanding of US Airspace and the NAS
  • Understanding of the VATUSA Structure

ATM is a Senior Staff role and therefore is not an entry-level position. The ATM will be required to dedicate several hours a day to the management of the ARTCC. However, the ATM must also be able to utilize his/her staff to effectively delegate tasks to assure the continuous operation of the ARTCC.

Please join me in welcoming Austin Wilkins as the new Fort Worth Air Traffic Manager! Austin has been the ZSE TA and the former VATUSA deputy training director. He was most recently ATM at the Denver ARTCC. Austin currently works for the FAA as an air traffic control specialist. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience, and ideas from the real world and VATSIM that will help him thrive in his new position. Congratulations Austin!

Please join me in welcoming Raaj Patel as the new Denver Air Traffic Manager! Raaj has been the ZDV TA for over a year. He was also the deputy air traffic manager where he successfully managed the FE, WM, and EC team to implement Denver's new website. Raaj is an electrical engineer with a minor in computer science and mathematics at Texas A&M University. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience, and ideas from the real world and VATSIM that will help him thrive in his new position. Congratulations Raaj!

Please join me in welcoming Dan Leavitt as the new Miami Air Traffic Manager! Dan started his VATSIM career in 2009 in ZAU where he moved up the ranks as the TA and then DATM. After a 7 year break, Dan came back and joined ZMA. From there, he has played a crucial role in the day-to-day ARTCC operation as the DATM in ZMA.  I am fully confident and happy to welcome Dan as the eastern's newest ATM. Congratulations!

Please join me in welcoming Aidan Deschene as the new Cleveland Air Traffic Manager! Last year, Aidan has played a vital role as the TA in ZOB where he built the training department from the ground up. He most recently served as VATUSA's Operations Planner under the command center. I am fully confident and happy to welcome Aidan back into the northeast as an ATM. Congratulations!

Position: Air Traffic Manager
Location: Cleveland ARTCC (ZOB)

Supervisor: Northeast Region Manager (RM)

VATUSA is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Air Traffic Manager at the Cleveland ARTCC. This position is not an entry-level position and will require significant time commitments to effectively perform the duties of Air Traffic Manager.

Duties of the ATM:

- Reports to the Northeastern Region Manager (RM) and directs the operations and management of the assigned facility
- Must maintain an online presence on the VATSIM network
- Maintains facility website and TeamSpeak and/or Discord
- Drafts facility SOPs, and other appropriate documents; seeks RM approval for the same
- Ensures facility SOPs, LOAs and other appropriate documents are readily available for viewing/download
- Functions as VATUSA staff member and attends meetings as necessary to discuss and stay current with region and division issues, policies, and initiatives
- Manages and defines the duties of facility staff; submits selection of Deputy ATM and Webmaster to the RM for final approval; submits selection of Training Administrator to the RM and Training Director and Assistant Training Director for final approval
- Provides guidance and help to assigned controllers; may establish a staff of "Mentors" to assist with training
- Works with or delegates a liaison to work with region/division-level Event Coordinators on events as necessary
- Addresses disciplinary situations with the RM when appropriate

Minimum Requirements:

- Possess a high degree of energy and commitment appropriate to the requirements of the position
- Must have at least a Controller (C1) rating
- Must be an active member of the network in good standing
- Must be able to work in a team environment and function as a team member
- Have no significant disciplinary record, no history of unprofessional behavior

Highly Desired Skills:

- Demonstrates qualities of understanding, patience, and maturity.
- Understands the role of the facility and facility staff within the Northeastern Region and VATUSA
- Understands the position requires CONSIDERABLE commitment of time
- Prior facility Senior Staff experience
- Prior or current Instructor or Mentor experience
- Experience effectively managing others through good leadership practices
- Real world management experience

Only those candidates who understand the requirements and can make the appropriate commitment should apply.  Candidates can expect an initial evaluation of their application after which they may be contacted for a comprehensive interview.  All qualified candidates will be reviewed and considered.

Hello, ever since the SimUpdate 5 came out, I could never see any other players' aircraft lights in the air or at the airport. Is this a VATSIM issue or a game bug?
