Events / Re: Assume there is an Open Mic Night tonight?
« on: April 30, 2021, 09:00:55 AM »
Quick question -- there's nothing on the calendar for FNO tonight -- so I assume it's an Open Mic Night, but you know what assume means... :)  Is that correct?  Would there normally be something on the calendar to specify Open Mic Nights, or are we no longer doing that?  Thanks!

Hey Don

No event this evening, we're taking it off. Yes you are correct. Open Mic or Light Up America will be posted on the event calendar in the future.

Is this Friday, April 23rd (USA Time) or is this on Saturday, April 24 as the event banner indicates? Also, is this FNO as well?

Good catch Lance. Sorry for the confusion. This event is an FNO that will be hosted on the 23rd. The banner will be modified shortly.

News / VATUSA Deputy Training Director
« on: September 03, 2018, 08:00:45 PM »
I am pleased to introduce Rick Rump as VATUSA's Deputy Training Director. Rick was former TA, DATM and recently the ATM of the Washington ARTCC. Rick has been instructing on the network for over five years. He has experience in project management and organization development. Rick has a lot of energy and ideas to bring to the division! Welcome!

When I was a TA I had all my students going for major approach run through our "Death File" at least once or twice (twice to see or show improvement, not passing). It wasn't required but I used it as a learning guide to FNO level traffic. We also had a file called "fix the mess". That file contained targets that were not sequence, etc. I'm sure we all have been put in situations during an FNO where a controller in the next sector froze up, lost connection, rage quit or a combination of the three. I think its important to understand both concepts and be able to dig your sector out of a hole when the time comes.

The "death file", or whatever you want to call it, shouldn't be used to degrade the students and I'm sure ZMP and the rest of ARTCCs aren't using it as such. For those of you who are using it as such then you are clearly using it wrong. I always told my students "this isn't passable try your best and let's not forget the basic fundamentals you were taught just because you are slammed". Then Id run them through the file the next week and show them their improvements.

So at the end of the day, I think these files are great if used the correct way!

If we’re going to wring our hands about how to improve events, we can’t blame it all on the pilots.

There are no written PDFs of the current training material. You should have access to the "legacy" material which is more what you are looking for. Most of the material in the legacy section is up to date, some things in there aren't.
