General Discussion / Re: Time for an Upgrade?
« on: May 27, 2018, 10:26:45 AM »
Schscchh!   Jeez you guys, she doesn't know about the raise yet, which is why I can't buy a new computer.  She'll see the new box and not have to wonder what's up.  But if I can sneak some new components into the old box she won't ever know  ; )

Confused a little, are you planning on getting a new motherboard for your old 3570k? Or are you looking for a good motherboard to pair with a new or fairly new CPU?
I don't know what I am thinking of doing. Is just a new motherboard the wrong way to go? I am not buying a new computer. I want to upgrade this one is all I know.  Assuming that is financially smart, of course.

General Discussion / Time for an Upgrade?
« on: May 25, 2018, 10:41:32 PM »
Hi guys. Thinking of pulling the trigger on an update since it's been a few years since the last one.  Here is what I am currently using:
Intel Core Ivy Bridge i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40 GHz  3.40GHz
24 GB of memory (I don't remember which kind)
GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card[font=]2 Dell & 2 Acer Monitors

What I need to know is which motherboard should I upgrade to?  Since everything is on sale this weekend I have a chance to pick up some stuff at a fairly inexpensive price, but just because motherboards are selling for as low as $200 I don't want to buy junk, or something that I'm not going to see a difference in performance from.  But I also don't want to go out and spend money just to spend it.

So what say you all?  Is there any way this discussion can come to a consensus?   lol

The Control Room Floor / Re: There are two types of controllers...
« on: May 19, 2018, 08:16:46 PM »
I'd want the controller, at least 98% of the time, to issue standard phraseology first.  If the controller realizes that the pilot is blatantly clueless in need of assistance and the controller needs to dumb it down assist the pilot, then, fine, assist the pilot.  But please, let's teach the right way and ALSO teach folks how to react to abnormal circumstances and be helpful (and teach the pilot the right way, workload permitting).  We can do both things here.  The OP is correct that standard phraseology should be used as a default, but we should also be savvy enough to recognize when there is a soul out there worth saving and try to save the soul (no, I'm not going to engage in a conversation on how to determine if the soul is worth saving....).

Give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.
Controllers are taught proper phraseology for a reason. If it didn't matter it wouldn't be taught.

I will add one more man's opinion here.  By trying to find another option to the problem of aircraft that are NORDO I believe that we would begin to slowly eliminate the current ones. In fact, we may be doing nothing more than adding another option that may or may not work either.  The fact that a pilot is not monitoring his radio, or the fact that a pilot is no longer paying attention to whether or not he is in controlled airspace violates several of our most basic rules of flight.  A pilot is supposed to know better and if controllers would do more than simply ignore the problem, and for  the record I admit to being one of those controllers, except when under heavy traffic or when it suites them, we might all be better off.

I would suggest that instead of trying to find another alternative to raise a pilots awareness of his surroundings, that perhaps they be better educated and,  if that education should include the results of a Supervisor's attention, then so be it.

Of course ymmv...

Well, it's Friday evening, 1900zulu, and in a few hours I get to hand the office keys to Tony.  I figure since everyone will be enjoying the festivities in the main conference room, that I would sneak off, let Don have his night, and very quietly thank you all for your kind words.  It has truly been a lot of fun; even the parts that weren't so much fun, because I had the opportunity to work with you; the VATUSA community.  There is much good here, and I want to thank everyone for allowing me to be part of it.

To Tony I say, have fun.  Keep your feet on the ground and remember your job description.  More importantly, realize that your words now carry much weight, both what you say in public and what you advise privately.  You must choose them carefully. The only advise I would give is something someone once told me. Take your job seriously but not yourself.

Good luck Tony.

To all of those well wishers, thank you!  To all of you who gave Bob this great send-off I will add my name and my two cents worth.  He has made this job his own, and in doing so has seen to it that anyone who tries to follow in his footsteps is looking toward an incredibly difficult future.  But try I will, and knowing that Bob has agreed to hold my hand until I figure the job out makes me feel good about sitting at his desk.

So thank you all, and I hope your name never crosses my desk.

CS/AIR FORCE ONE RMK/PRIORITY AIRCRAFT RMK/VATUSA1 ON BOARD

I can't be the only one who would have fun holding Don while being unable to provide priority ;-)

Of course  not.  Watch them try and get through NY CTR without having to do a few loop-d-loops!   lol

The Control Room Floor / Re: Minimum Requirements to VISIT
« on: December 08, 2017, 01:39:28 PM »
Hello everyone,

I am currently part of VATUK. I control at the UK (obvious), the traffic levels do get very high, and I was in a TS3 server with my friends and they said they are transferring over to VATUSA when they get their S2's. I want to visit to get more training and also control in the US which will be fun. Anybody know the requirements to request a visit. I have the S1 and P1 rating.

Cheers,

Adam

Hello Adam. I do indeed know the requirements and the process as well, that you must follow to obtain visiting status here at VATUSA.  The very first thing you will learn that you must do is self learning.  We place a great value on those members who use their own initiative to get ahead; instead of simply asking for help all the time they go out and find the answer themselves.

To that end, here is your very first lesson at VATUSA.  The answer to your question can be found here, oddly enough, in our SUPPORT Center where we have a Knowlegebase setup to answer questions just like yours.  I'll even give you the link:  https://www.vatusa.net/help/kb

So there you have it.  A lesson learned and a little knowledge gained.

Welcome to VATUSA and Good Luck!
