It’s crossfire time at Chicago and Cleveland! Come join us for a O’Hare and Cleveland Hopkins spectacular! Departures are to be wheels up sometime between 2300-2359z for the first leg, and should plan to depart back (if you wish) before 0250z, we will ensure full staffing for aircraft within this timeframe. Preferred routes are in the reply below.

Updated routing for traffic flow. Note traffic flying from KCLE into KORD will be assigned VEECK4 (RNAV) unless otherwise stated for spacing.

Hi Jack,
highly appreciate providing a NON-RNAV Route! As a US Newby, could you please explain how to file this route, as GSH is not on the OHARE 5 departure?

Bassy regards,
Benjamin

There is no transition on the ORD5 departure. The chart says "All aircraft EXPECT RADAR vectors to first enroute NAVID/fix" so just file GSH and expect vectors to GSH

Thanks Odinn,

you made my day – I was looking for the mistake I made... but I did not ,-) I do read the charts!
Let me tell about my flight during the event:

The departure route was stated on the event briefing for NON RNAV, so I was confused after being cancelled for this when calling clearance! I filed it exactly like in the event briefing for my NON RNAV 732... After cancellation no further help from the controller... He just told me to read the charts.

So I made up an alternative for myself, filed GIPPER (GIJ) as departure, updated flightplan, was cleared, and: Should taxi to 09L. Holding short of entry A8! Another big question mark on my forehead ,-) https://skyvector.com/files/tpp/1904/pdf/00166AD.PDF (https://skyvector.com/files/tpp/1904/pdf/00166AD.PDF)
Well, after checking again with the controller I got 09R - and after this some other planes got 09R too (already being cleared to 09L, LOL).

Enroute I did not get a descent by the controller, so I requested myself, which lead into a big vectoring (732 verrrry slippy, but no prob, enough fuel) and a nice landing.
I can not remember if after landing I was handled via TWR or GND, but when being asked where to go: I stated "U.S. CUSTOMS IMIGRATION" and got the reply "I do no know where this is!"

How can it be a foreign pilot (just a few hours in US, but may overseas) seems to know departure charts, US airspaces and ground charts better than the local controllers during a VATUSA event?

Bassy regards
Benjamin
