The Control Room Floor / Re: Trying to find a home.

It really depends on your views on life, the universe, and everything!
ZNY is a very busy place with many controllers and a huge amount of traffic.  Very challenging.
ZBW is a little more laid back but also has a large number of controllers since their merger.  Also a lot of traffic but the airspace is not as congested as ZNY.

Here at ZOB, we have a pretty laid back ARTCC with moderate traffic and a small number of controllers.  We are a tight bunch and most of our training occurs in the evenings and sometimes on weekends.  Feel free to stop by and check us out!

Those are some great ideas!

I'm a little worried about the .pilothelp command.  There is a huge potential for abuse and/or misuse (even unintentionally).
Perhaps it should be restricted to C1 or higher ratings?
I plan to make internal policy at ZOB that a controller must try a .wallop at least twice before going with a .pilothelp.
And even then, I'll caution against it unless absolutely necessary to prevent conflict.
I'll likely also require ZOB controllers to email me and our DATM with an official write-up any time the command is used.

Multicom is just a fantastic idea.  Can't wait to see how it works out!

I just spoke with our TA about having our instructing staff review the CBT's.  Is there a way to just make them available to existing instructing staff?

I just went through the instructor CBT's for the first time.
I have to say... EXCELLENT job!  I wish those had been available when I first became an instructor.
I'll be suggesting to our TA that all ZOB instructors and mentors review the instructor CBT's.

News / ZOB DATM Hired!
« on: January 22, 2017, 01:33:57 PM »
It is my privilege to welcome Joe Carr to our team as the new ZOB DATM!

We had a number of highly qualified candidates apply for the position, from both inside and outside the ARTCC.
The competition was very close and I would like to thank every person who took the time to put in an application.

In the end, Joe's time as a ZOB controller, his extensive involvement in our training program as an I1, and his unperturbed levelheadedness in challenging situations won out!

Congrats Joe!
And now, the real work begins.

Thank you kindly!
It is a privilege.

It is my intent to MAKE ZOB GREAT AGAIN!
There will be  post for the DATM position later today, I encourage anyone interested to apply.

Some of the projects we currently have under development at ZOB are:
  • New website is being created to bring ZOB into the 21st century;
  • Revision of LOA's with surrounding ARTCC's to conform them to latest routings and AIRAC's;
  • Recent revisions of all sector and associated VRC files with the start of EUROSCOPE files;
  • New RNAV arrivals for KDTW being incorporated into training flow;
  • Working on migrating to a new TeamSpeak Server;
  • and still searching for new FE.

I look forward to working with all of you and I encourage anyone interested in making ZOB his or her home to apply or to become a visiting controller.  We are typically a later evening kind of crowd with a lively Teamspeak and much comradery!  We have a dedicated training staff (though we could always use more) and busy airspace!

Thank you.

I've always wondered about pilots who don't call when a controller is online.  It seems completely antithetical to the purpose and spirit of VATSIM.  Typically, I chalk it up to either: A.) The pilot is scared to talk to ATC;  B.) the pilot is pooping; C.) the pilot doesn't know he is supposed to talk to ATC.  Or some variation of one of those three.

Assuming my airspace is not too busy and the nordo pilot is not in danger of causing an incident, I often like to just wait and see if they call.  It's almost a game, really!  How far across my ARTCC will DAL5722 get before he wakes up?  I've only had a few make it all the way, but why get annoyed about it?
