General Discussion / Cross the Gulf Event Helping Sandy Victim
« on: December 09, 2012, 06:42:18 PM »

It gives me great pleasure to announce that planning has begun for Cross the Gulf Westbound 2013. Last year, the westbound leg raised money for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. This year, we're raising money for the Red Cross.  I lost a few friends and some of my family members lost their homes because of the storm. For those who haven't seen my story on the news, I've been helping a Staten Island resident during my volunteering time with the New York State Nursing Association. My co-workers and I treated a Sandy victim who was having an asthma attack, his name is Eddie Saman. He has no family and his house got destroyed during the hurricane; he lost all of his belongings. I was able to gather a bunch of donations for Eddie, but then his home went up in flames and he's now back at ground zero; all of the donations were ruined in the blaze. This man hasn't gotten a break and it's very sad. On top of all his troubles, he was discriminated against by a FEMA inspector! Last year we raised a lot of money that was donated towards research for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. We did it once and we can do it again. Eddie is now receiving shelter and hot meals complementary of the Red Cross. There are hundreds of families that are suffering just like Eddie. If you donate to the Red Cross, your donation will help fund hot meals and shelter. The Red Cross needs your help!  If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected]. To learn more about Eddie Saman, click on the media coverage links below. Just remember, there's hundreds of people suffering just like him.

To make a donation to the Red Cross, visit www.crossthegulf.com

Pilots will be traveling east to west across the Gulf of Mexico enjoying never before seen ATC Staffing. We plan on having the event on January 27, 2013. We are advising the Vatsim Community early because we want as many ideas as possible.  This is your chance to sound off! Please let us know all of your ideas that come to mind. We should be announcing the airport selections and routing sometime in the next few weeks. We are expecting a huge turnout for this event, and I'm sure that it will be an amazing experience for all who participate. If you'd like to join the planning team, please send your resume to [email protected].

General Discussion / Office of the Director Page
« on: October 23, 2011, 05:34:04 PM »
Staff,

On the Vatusa website, there is a page called "Office of the Director." That page has been there ever since Andrew Podner was the Divison Director and it wasn't edited when a new director took over. I know that it's not a big deal, but I wanted to point it out to the staff to fix it. :-)

Great day,

General Discussion / Live ATC For Vatsim
« on: February 08, 2011, 01:29:58 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I'm a big fan of Live ATC. I think it's very neat to listen in on real world controllers. With that being said, I was wondering if we can have something similar on VATSIM. I think it would be very neat to listen to controllers live that are controlling on the network. People might say that it's easy to just sign on the network and listen, but it can come handy when you're not near your PC. I know that not everyone wants to be listened to on a live Voice Server, so maybe we can make it an optional thing. Are there any ideas for this?

ZMA is hoping that Danielle stays away from the state of Florida. Cross the Gulf is next Sunday and ZMA does not want Danielle to disturb the event. LOL

Tropics Watch: "Danielle Wannabe"
by Jonathan Erdman, Editorial Meteorologist

What about the U.S.?

To be sure, it is much too soon to determine if this system will eventually impact the U.S.  It depends, to a large part, on the steering currents in the atmosphere's upper levels.

The following pattern would "guard" the East Coast from a tropical cyclone approaching from the Atlantic Ocean (not Caribbean Sea or Gulf of Mexico).  Namely, a trough, or dip in the upper-level wind currents over or near the East Coast, and, therefore, an upper ridge retreated into the central or eastern Atlantic would cause the tropical cyclone to curve toward the north and northeast, well away from the East Coast.

[img]http://i36.tinypic.com/286wk5w.jpg\\\" border=\\\"0\\\" class=\\\"linked-image\\\" /]

Last season's most intense tropical cyclone, Hurricane Bill, did just that.

If the eastern trough is absent, and therefore, the upper-ridge expands westward, a more ominous pattern sets up for the East Coast.  Instead of "recurving" out to open waters, the tropical cyclone would then continue a west or northwest track toward the coast.

[img]http://i35.tinypic.com/98rs7m.jpg\\\" border=\\\"0\\\" class=\\\"linked-image\\\" /]

Intense hurricanes can also "build their own" upper-level ridge, which would force their track a little farther south (or left, if you will).

At this time, any potential U.S. impact from this system wouldn't occur until the last few days of August, if not later.  So, there is plenty of time to monitor this situation.  Now would be a great time to make sure you're prepared for a hurricane.
