Cornell,

It was great working with you as the ZDV TA last year. Thanks for your time and dedication to VATUSA.

General Discussion / Deal or no deal?

If Fergus is right, then this is definitely a deal. Loss of vertical and horizontal separation. The crossing restriction at SAYGE would still be in Class A airspace, so the horizontal separation was lost by 1000ft. The question that needs to be asked is if the RPA arrival was asked to descend any further on his arrival to KDEN. Assuming that he already passed SAYGE, altitude/speed would need to be coordinated with D50. If he went back to SAYGE and was still under ZDV control, he would have to be at least at FL190, putting them head on with the SKW arrival.

The TRACON is in the clear on this, so it definitely is a deal for the ZDV controller.

BL.
Yeah, it was a deal. Thank God for TCAS. All D01 (Denver TRACON) arrivals are usually told to descend at pilots' discretion to the altitude restriction, in this case being FL190. The article states that the controller was "apparently thinking the pilots would simply merge with the traffic already on the (SAYGE Six Arrival) sources said," which I don't really think is true unless the controller was absolutely not thinking straight...I mean, FL190 is still IFR-only airspace; planes aren't going to follow each other on STAR routes.

(The following is purely my own speculation:) I would guess that the ZDV controller was probably thinking he could put the Republic aircraft on the LANDR5, which runs adjacently to the SAYGE6. However, D01 recently restricted the use of LANDR (I'm not sure if that restriction is still in effect, but I believe it is) due to a lack of experienced controllers on D01's staff to handle parallel STAR traffic. The ZDV controller might have forgotten that in the high-traffic situation. It sounds to me as if RPA may have been inside or very close to the D01 TRACON boundary (perhaps a handoff was rejected?) but vectored north to SAYGE by Denver Center at the last minute due to the LANDR STAR closure. It's hard to say whether or not my theory is correct based on the FlightAware track for the Republic airplane because I can't tell where LANDR is in relation to SAYGE on their map, but I wouldn't be surprised if what I said is close to correct.

I recently passed the VATUSA basic controller exam, and it asked me to select an ARTCC. I chose zDV. When I go to login at zDV's site though, it says my login has failed. How long does it take for me to be able to login?
The ZDV website will have a separate login username and password from your VATSIM account or VATUSA website account. After you pass the exam it typically takes 24-72 hours to be given a ZDV website account. If it's longer than that e-mail Jon Standley: jon[at)denartcc.org.

General Discussion / Where Central ARRTCC region go

There was a reorganization of regions. I can't seem to find the thread. You can find the new regional director assignments by going to the staff page.

The Control Room Floor / Interphone (and VSCS)
« on: November 05, 2009, 09:37:22 PM »
I've found intercom to be especially helpful when working Center during events or high traffic situations. Other ARTCCs can call me to ask about routing and coordinate between sectors instead of having to hunt down Teamspeak IPs. Using a Teamspeak server can allow for a more informally-phrased coordination to take place, and really that's what usually happens in the real world when controllers are in the same facility (a tower cab, for example). There is phraseology specified in the 7110.65 for intercom calls if you want to make it even more realistic, although it is not really that much more intense than a typical phone call   .

General Discussion / Server Disconnects

As both a controller on VATSIM and a pilot, I wanted to comment on the service interruptions. It truly is getting annoying. I was working on getting in a few flights today and spoke to VATGOV5 ( I think it was ) who too was experiencing a lot of boots. USA-S3 I am getting dropped relentlessly, USA-SE keeps timing out and USA-W unable to connect to. ( Connection refused ) The only server that I am able to hold a solid connection to is UK.

As a pilot this is more than annoying. Enjoying the company of other pilots is what we're all here for. Does VATSIM / VATUSA have a solution for this?

Sincerely,
Melinda Romig

Melinda,

You didn't mention anything about the other servers. You are still permitted to connect to the remaining ones and see how they work out.

Virtual Airlines / UnitedVA in the Making

Hub manager? Yes. we hav all 5 positions open. By the way, all applicants will be required to have a one-on-one interview over teamspeak and submit a record of experience as a VA staff (if any). Also, you must not have had any trouble with VATSIM.

If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]

Thanks,
Wesley Chow

I believe he's talking about another United VA. There are a couple out there. Be careful, too; this airline keeps a close eye on its simulation counterparts.

General Discussion / Squawk Codes

OK. I think you do the Sweatbox differently in ZDV, if you use VRC Voice. At ZOB, we do voice over Teamspeak, so that's why we don't need to switch our voice channels.
Haha yes, we do. I was just clarifying that when you use voice (in VRC...the VATSIM voice servers), the channel has to be different. I do understand, however, that text-only frequencies will not cause interference.

[!--quoteo--][div class=\\\'quotetop\\\']QUOTE [/div][div class=\\\'quotemain\\\'][!--quotec--]TWR Trainer will not allow the instructor to assign a squawk code starting with a zero.[/quote]
Are you talking about having a preset squawk code in the aircraft file? Otherwise TWRTrainer doesn't assign squawk codes. Either that or I'm forgetting about something.

EDIT:
I understand now. When you have a clearance delivery and you tell an aircraft to squawk a code starting with zero, it won't let you do it. I haven't had this problem in ZDV, specifically at Denver Int'l. All of our codes start with zero as well (specifically 0601-0677). Do you get an error message, or just no result at all?

Harold,

You don't have to switch your vox channels to avoid hearing the Network, you just neeed to not select the "SPKR or HDST" options. You will be a "text-only" controller on a different network. You will not interfere with the Network at all.
Yes, you do have to switch voice channels to avoid hearing the real-time servers' controllers' voice frequencies, but only if you want to use voice through VRC. We do this in ZDV, but I know other facilities use Teamspeak/Skype/etc.

If Denver Approach is on USA-S3, for example, on frequency 120.350 and channel DEN_APP, and there is a student on Denver Approach on Sweatbox on frequency 120.350 and channel DEN_APP, then the Sweatbox controller will be interfering with the controller on USA-S3. As long as either controller switches their voice channel, the two can be connected to their respective servers without interfering with each other on voice.

General Discussion / Squawk Codes

Andrew, I'm away and on a hotel pc so I don't have the POF File, but I know ZOB has moree squawks than that. CLE TRACON has codes starting with "0". I am sure because it is a problem using TWR Trainer.
Make sure your students have the PRIM option checked when using Sweatbox. The POF file won't be effective without the PRIM. If PRIM is unchecked, VRC will issue 1000, 1001, 1002, etc. Other than that there is no explanation as to why TWRTrainer would affect your squawk codes.

The only way the PRIMing could potentially cause interference with the real-time (USA-W2, S3, EUROPE-CE, etc.) is if the voice channel is set to that of the real-time position. In ZDV I implemented a policy which required Sweatbox students and instructors to change their voice channels to XXX_YY_XXX, where YY was their controller initials. This prevented two controllers (one on Sweatbox, one on the real-time server) to be using the same channel, and it therefore prevents interference.

The VATUSA squawk codes allocated to each ARTCC are the ones that are supposed to be in use. You'll know when someone is using your squawk codes when the CODE error appears in aircraft datatags. In ZDV there are airports without a realistic set of squawk codes because of this document, but because of the limitations of the network, they are required.

Does anyone have a copy of the VATUSA-designated ARTCC squawk codes?
