The Classroom (Controller Tips) / VRC's Flight Strip Bay

Here is my setup (Only two monitors are hooked up)

It does the job for me...
I have a 17 inch on which I do use the flight strip bay in conjunction with my scope and other VRC windows. Personally, I love flight strips. I can mark essentially anything in the scratchpad and sequence aircraft using the flight strip bay. When I'm done with the aircraft (working TRACON or Tower), I can push it to the next controller (unless they request otherwise).

Yes they are and I can guarantee most of the videos will be in the new VATUSA Training Resource Center as a way of visually teaching some of the more 'complex" aspects of the radar environment. I'm a big fan of pictures and video.

Yeah, these are absolutely fantastic resources. We've been using them in ZDV for a while.

General Discussion / Clarification on transfers and visiting

Hi guys, I have been reviewing the VATUSA policies and wanted clarification on these things:

2. If I were to visit outside of VATUSA/VATNA, does the 50% time controlling at your home ARTCC rule still count?
---I plan on also visiting occasionally at VATASIA's Mainland China vACCs and would like some clarification on this note.

Thanks!

Hi Colin,

In response to #1: I believe you now need to wait until July 27 (if 4/27 was your exact date of acceptance into ZOA) because you're outside of the 30-day window.

In response to #2: Yes.

Hi,  I am new... And am waiting for my slew of emails... Want to know my big question?

How do I get the radar to work so I can observe?

I've been reading everything I can get my fingers on to learn, but I would love some live examples of what I've read so far...

Red Satiin
Hey Red,

There are two choices in radar clients. Most training departments usually recommend VRC. It's a newer product and has more features than ASRC. Check it out at www.metacraft.com/vrc.

Out of curiosity, do we have an idea of who might be responsible for this?

Wow, you've outdone yourself already! Nice work. I'm really hoping we can get our ARTCC tests back from the CertCenter.

Thanks Alex, I wasn't sure at first.

The test seemed like some good information to know.  The things I wasn't sure about I looked up so I would know in the future.

Yes, I'm sure a lot of the stuff in our tests would also benefit pilots as well. You can read about those topics here: http://www.vatusa.net/training/reference.html

Additionally, and probably most importantly, you'll want to have a look at the VATSIM PRC, which can be found at http://www.vatsim.net/prc.

General Discussion / How many days do i wait to transfer
« on: March 23, 2009, 09:01:41 PM »
[!--quoteo--][div class=\\\'quotetop\\\']QUOTE [/div][div class=\\\'quotemain\\\'][!--quotec--][size=]I am currently at ZDV but do not like it there because they have documents that conflict each other. For example: for VFR they have an SOP Class B airspace transponder codes that are different than other parts of their site.

About a week ago was controlling as DEN_GND and was sent a chat that I was issuing the wrong squawk code to VFR. VFR out of class B per the SOP is 5201,etc BUT another document has it as 1201,etc. Therefore i was sent a chat "5201????" and I advising the TWR controller that issued the squaek per the SOP and my trainer and he said it was wrong.

therefore, i am asking to transfer to another Facility because ZDV has many docs that contridict each other. I want a region that has ONE SET OF RULES. At ZDV they use whatever document they want so there is no consistency there!

So, I am looking to transfer. How do i find my start date with ZDV and when can i transfer out?

thanks,

Okay, honest to God...I'm one of the most active individuals on this forum, Tom.

First of all, we're going through a major transition for those who aren't already aware. More GRP compliant, more documents, better sector files, etc. Some documents presented on our site are not in sync with each other. It's pretty common, Tom; don't be surprised when you see it at other facilities. At the very moment of me writing this thread, I'm sitting through a staff meeting that began about an hour ago to clarify what the heck we need to do to make everything sync up.

Just today, I reformatted and republished SIX training syllabuses and changed the backend of our site so that instructors and mentors can use them in "checklist" styles. That's a good four hours of work, plus homework, plus family, plus me. I don't have raw copies of the guides that are presented to you in .pdf formats, so that lies in the responsibility of my webmaster to remove the links.

You, sir, need to give me a break. We have been e-mailing back and forth all weekend talking about your issues with my department. I have clarified to you countless times that controllers read SOPs for the OFFICIAL information, and I have provided you the correct information from my own words in accordance with the SOP. Coming to this forum, one which I check pretty much about four times a day, and complaining about the same issues that I have already cleared up with you is simply inconsiderate and rude. I'm doing my absolute best job as the ZDV Training Administrator to ensure that we're providing you students with the information that you need to become excellent controllers, and in fact, I think I've done an excellent job thus far.

There are about fifteen students progressing through the system right now, and not one of them have complained to this extent about two digits in a VFR squawk code.

You're digging yourself a hole, and I suggest you stop. My utmost courtesy toward you in replies your all capital letter e-mails ends now. Trying to embarrass ZDV, myself, and my training staff is absolutely not going to happen.

The Control Room Floor / I'd like to observe
« on: March 13, 2009, 12:05:49 AM »
Hi Alex,

Well, firstly, welcome to VATSIM. I'm sure you'll have a good time.

You might want to consider using VRC for observing and initial training on VATSIM. ASRC is older software compared to VRC, and generally speaking, VRC is easier to use for first-time members. ASRC is still an excellent program, but you might want to hold off on it until you're experienced enough to use it proficiently (VRC is a point-and-click-based client, while ASRC is mostly memorized dot commands).

Anyway, yes, you can still observe without having to take any exams. To do this, you'll need to have the sector file for the area in which you'd like to observe loaded in your radar client (VRC or ASRC). These can be found at the websites of each facility. If you're looking for Phoenix Sky Harbor sector files, you can find them at the Albuquerque ARTCC website, http://www.zabartcc.org/ . A full list of VATUSA ARTCCs is available on the right hand panel of www.vatusa.net.

Once you have the sector file loaded, you'll want to connect to the network to observe. In VRC or ASRC, go to File --> Connect, at which point a new box will appear with fields in which you can input your connection information. Use an observer callsign such as ZAB_OBS (ZAB is the three-letter identifier for the Albuquerque ARTCC, and OBS indicates that you are an observer) when connecting. Then enter your name. Select "Observer" from the facility drop-down menu and the rating drop-down menu. Then enter your VATSIM CID and password, select a server, and click connect. You'll also probably want to adjust your visibility range from the default 600 down to something around 50 miles, more or less depending on what sector file you're using. To do this in VRC, go to Settings --> General --> Airspace [tab] --> Visibility slider. To do this in ASRC, go to Settings and adjust the slider.

For more information on ASRC, visit www.asrc.info, and for more information on VRC (including an observers' guide), go to www.metacraft.com/vrc .

The Control Room Floor / VRC help!

I had this problem as well. If you are using a router, you need to forward ports 3290 and 3782 to the computer you are using. You will also need to set your router up so that your computer uses the same router IP address each time you start it up. On Netgear routers it is called IP Address Reservation and Port Forwarding/Triggering. On other routers, it may be called Static IP. Sorry not sure, but I know each router calls it something different.

For those that want to host a Teamspeak Server, you would need to forward port 8767 to the hosting computer.

Hope this helps...

In addition, make sure you have port triggering set to max to avoid having the port automatically blocked.

Hi Mark,

I was Denver Center last night when you were calling me up. There is a feature on my radar client that allows me to select aircraft based on their callsign. After trying different variations of your callsign to get you selected on the scope (so that I could open your flight plan and such), I was unable to do so. With that said, I switched radar modes to where I could see all callsigns, and I looked all around for you in my airspace without prevail.

Are you sure that you connected to VATSIM at Denver International (KDEN) or a nearby field?

ATC Note: No scope filters were used on that session.
