The Classroom (Controller Tips) / Class D Tower Reference Sheet

Really is controller preference, around here all the C/Ds use follow and assume pilots are grown up enough to know their aircraft and how to space themselves properly.   But then again, FAA doesn't like letting pilots think, hence the movement to the Kindergarten queue instruction "Line up and wait [kiddies]".
HAHA...tell me about it.

Daniel,

You are correct on a number of those points, and between the late nights of putting this together, I overlooked a few things. The MTOW for heavies is of particular importance, as is the note about traffic information vs. advisories.

For me, the preferred method is to always call pilot bases if I can. My experience with the traffic notification and then a "follow" instruction has been that pilots will either turn way too early to allow for proper spacing, or turn way too late and cause a multitude of other issues. Granted, it's completely a controller's prerogative, but the way I hear it at Class Ds and Cs all over uses that method.

Needless to say, there are probably 10-20 different ways to do everything at Class D towers, but I just wanted to give some tips for new controllers and even those radar guys who sometimes forget about their S2 days .

I'll let you all know when I have a chance to update.

I have created a simple Class D local control reference sheet for ZDV students and wanted to share it with the community. ARTCCs may distribute this under their own domain name and may modify as necessary. No credit is necessary; this is all commonly available information.

A great place to share those funny liveatc recordings...yes!

Great idea Gary!
In that case, I can't resist.

Thanks everyone for all the good wishes, but it appears many of you were rather persuasive in your individual messages to me.  I am going to stay aboard for a little bit longer.
This is quite the community, isn't it?

General Discussion / Need Some Traffic @ RAP Tonight
« on: November 07, 2011, 04:02:00 PM »
I need some pilots to come fly VFR at Rapid City Airport (RAP) tonight for controller training. VFR pattern work, straight out departures, and arrivals are welcome. IFR departures and arrivals are also welcome, but Class D airspace management is the focus tonight. Denver Center will be online between 1830 and 2130 MST this evening, and Denver Tower and Approach will also be up. Your help is greatly appreciated.

If you are interested in helping out, it would be great if you could post a quick RSVP below. Thanks!

The Control Room Floor / ATC Headsets

The foot petals are also quite good, Delcom sells some decent ones that will run you around $40 or so. I prefer that when sitting down as apposed to the handheld PTT as Cameron mentioned, it frees up your hands for strip marking/keyboard entries.

Something else I noticed, the H31 Dhruv has here is definitely a bargain price, but I don't believe that is the Controller/Dispatch version (at least it doesn't appear to be). I used to use that headset and it definitely lasted a while, but one thing I've learned to appreciate about the C/D version is the thinner wire to the quick disconnect makes it easier to move around with and I believe the audio quality is a a bit more boosted on the C/D version. I bought mine over the summer from ebay as well, but the one from Albany headsets for $50 is a steal for that version...

I've probably gone way too much into Plantronics products here, but they make a solid headset (I think someone is pulling pranks on BW at work  )... I've never really had a major problem with anything from them that I've purchased.
AJ,

Could you PM me the contact? I could probably get them a decent order from the guys at ZDV.

Click the Settings button on the main FS9 menu. You can configure the key/joystick assignments there. I'd also suggest reading the VATSIM PRC if you haven't already done so (http://vatsim.net/PRC).

Still think you got a bad one. Mine's going strong 2 years in...
I'm very tempted to try it again, but I'm a poor college student!

I use a Plantronics .Audio 476 DSP. You could actually get a similar model with the mini-boom style of the Starset H31 if you wanted to try that model.

A lot of people disagree with me, but I no longer recommend the Starset H31 for VATSIM controlling. Mine completely broke after spending around $80 on it. I have a different headset from Plantronics with noise cancelling capability, which is a nice feature. The key to getting any headset is comfort and clarity. In terms of comfort, you want something light for those long sessions. In terms of clarity, you should be able to understand your own Voice ATIS. I highly recommend getting a USB one, too.

Each aircraft has a maximum flaps extended speed. Slow to those speeds before lowering your flaps.

The basic concept of slowing down has to do with raising the nose and reducing power. Pitch for airspeed, power for altitude. It seems a little bit counter-intuitive, but that's how it works.

Take some time to explain to us what you mean, sans sarcasm, and then we'll help you.
