I wonder if there are any hardcore ZOB basketball fans that refuse to use the fix until the name is changed.
"Cleared direct Dryer 081 radial, 24 DME."

The Control Room Floor / WHERE ARE THE VIDEOS?

I've been using the VATUSA Resource Center training materials from the Basic ATC through C1 and noticed that almost all of the MP4 "ATCast video, brought to you by SATCA and the University of North Dakota" are not working. This starts at Issuing Clearances and while some of the earlier sections have YouTube link connections, the higher levels through S2 and S3 etc are not working. I tried the following link without any more success: http://www.undsatca.org/atcast.php
It apparently requires QuickTime which I have fully updated.
Is this just me? Are there replacements at another site?

david
David,

You can also get them on iTunes for free if you search for "ATCast" in the iTunes store. I'm not sure what's going on with our local/linked versions.

General Discussion / Where to find the vZTL .sct2 Files

... has been obtained via the FOIA and at the request of our former TA and AFE is was asked to be keep under lock and key, although it was obtained via the FOIA the material contains sensitive information.
FOIA releases don't contain material that, in the view of FOIA, could compromise national security. Certain documents that do compromise national security are kept under lock and key, FOIA request or not. If you get a FOIA request granted, you can freely release that material to anyone. Major news organizations do this weekly. It's not really your problem if, after being on the receiving end of FOIA, you are asked to remove materials released through it. Someone's throwing a hissy fit that they can't legally do anything about.

SOPs that I've requested have certain elements blacked out, such as the hotline frequency to the TRACON and individual phone line extensions for en-route positions. That, obviously, is sensitive material.

The display of sector files was covered in a rule at one point, but I don't know where to find it now.

Here's the thing...

If you work for the FAA, you're not supposed to be freely giving out this information. And if you give out the information, you shouldn't be telling a bunch of people you did so. The Freedom of Information Act is the only legal way to get sector file, SOP, and LOA updating accomplished. Because once the information is released under FOIA, it can be disseminated to anyone. So, either people have to keep it quiet (you can't have people going to visit ZTL saying, "Yeah, one of your guys works for us and gave us all your info,") or you have to go through FOIA, which usually doesn't take more than a month or two.

As to whether or not you could get in legal trouble for it, that'd be a tough sell. If anything could happen, the person who disseminated the information could get fired. All of the information you have could be obtained under FOIA, and the real legal issue stems from the fact that you didn't use FOIA to get the same information.

Much greater clarification is needed on this and a number of other topics for ARTCC administrators. And because those roles change so frequently, getting it written down in an easily-accessible document or something would be a great help.

The Control Room Floor / ground taxi phraseology
« on: August 12, 2011, 10:06:59 AM »
"Taxi to" is not used by real world controllers when issuing taxi instructions to a departure runway. This is consistent across the US. Those who have been with the FAA for a long time sometimes forget to use the revised phraseology, but that isn't very common.

The "taxi via" phraseology used to only be used when the taxi instruction involved a runway hold short instruction. Runway hold short instructions would only be issued if the taxiway route would take an aircraft across an active runway; an aircraft did not need a clearance to do this and could otherwise cross any runway unless advised not to do so. An accompanying change to the above was a new regulation that aircraft could not cross any runways -- active, inactive, or closed -- without an explicit clearance. Thus, the FAA switched all taxi instructions to a departure runway to the "taxi via" phraseology.

"Taxi to" is used to issue taxi instructions to parking.

The Control Room Floor / ZDV Seeks C1s
« on: August 09, 2011, 07:11:19 PM »
Greetings everyone,

ZDV is currently in search of a couple C1s (or higher) who are available on August 27th between 1100 and 1800 MDT. We are looking for a handful of guys (or girls!) to help us at Denver Center during our biggest event of the year, Denver Live! You do not have to attend the event live, though you are more than welcome to do so. About 10 of us will be live at the Front Range Airport Conference Room. 17 have signed up to control, but we're looking for a few more!

Those who are interested will be assigned a sector to work with an accompanying SOP. One training session will be administered prior to the event at your convenience.

To sign up, contact me: [email protected]. Please indicate your home ARTCC, availability on August 27th (all day, a few hours, etc.), and any further questions you may have.

If you are a member of ZLA, ZLC, ZMP, ZKC, or ZAB (our neighbors), please ensure your ARTCC will have appropriate staffing prior to coming over to our airspace, as we will need help from our neighbors, too.

The Control Room Floor / ATIS Question.

Quote from: Andrew Doubleday
Just wanted to add that, although the VRC program defaults to include the phrase "winds", it should only be pronounced in the singular form as "wind" when stating it on frequency/cutting an ATIS.

Also, the phrase "sky conditions" should be omitted while cutting an ATIS (I notice a lot of people tend to include this when I listen in).

In the example METAR Matthew posted, it should be cut as follows on the ATIS: "Memphis International Airport information ECHO, two-two-five-four zulu, wind variable between 070-140 @ 8, visibility one-zero (omit statute miles as it's implied when discussing visibility distances), few clouds at four-thousand, ceiling two-five thousand broken... <continue on with recording>"
Totally agree. We actually have students download a new VRC.ini file that includes color profiles, a revised ATISMaker script, and a configured COMMS panel before we commence training.
