Just a reminder to all, especially those that are challenged with Zulu time conversions ;) , that Standard Time is once again in effect.  Hopefully everyone either remembered or sees this post, and doesn't figure it out by showing up to church an hour early (not that there is anything wrong with that).... :)

USA Division Updates / Leadership Opportunity
« on: November 03, 2017, 07:51:20 AM »
Team,

On February 3, 2013, I was entrusted to lead the VATUSA Division. We’ve come a long way, aligning behind and improving in each of the elements of my initial vision of culture, improved training, retention, growth, presence and balance, yet still have plenty of room for continued growth and improvement in each.

February 3, 2018 will mark my five-year anniversary in the Division Director role. Based primarily on my real-world obligations, particularly work and family commitments, that continue to grow and force me to prioritize, yet also taking into account my desire not to let the Division stagnate and give the Division and its members an opportunity to enjoy new, fresher blood, I have decided to provide a three-month notice of my intent to retire from the Division Director role upon completing my fifth year as Director of one of the best, strongest, most vibrant and fun Divisions in VATSIM.

The good news is that our bench is strong; I feel that there is significant leadership at the Division HQ as well as throughout the Division that can move around and up in order to ensure a healthy transition. I have served significantly longer than any other VATUSA Division Director, which has been excellent in terms of consistency of vision, strategy, leadership and execution, but it also introduces the peril of stagnation and the risk that our rapid-growth and improvement focus and results plateau. It also prevents those with excellent leadership potential from learning to lead at the Division level, and learning to become a truly excellent leader of an organization that currently numbers over 20,000 members.

My hope, by providing the notice that I have, is that a selection and transition plan can be accomplished in an orderly and healthy manner. Nic Felini, VATNA Director, has expressed his appreciation for the ability to have plenty of time to conduct a proper search and transition for a role of such importance to the VATSIM network.

I want to thank you for your faith, trust, loyalty, hard work and support over these last several years. Together, we have created a lot of the magic that I often talk about – let’s keep it going and growing!

Best,

Don

Events / WorldFlight 2017
« on: October 22, 2017, 08:11:45 PM »

It's that time of the year again!  Prepare yourself for one the larger events on the VATSIM calendar and you are invited to join in the fun!

WorldFlight 2017

This year, WorldFlight will be celebrating its 17th year of operations.  WorldFlight will start in Sydney (YSSY) on 04 November and will finish 8 days later on 11 November.

WorldFlight is a virtual round the world flight that raises money for selected charities around the world. There will be a number of fixed based simulators participating in the event. Full ATC coverage from both local and international controllers will be provided throughout the event as it makes its way around the world.

Join the WorldFlight this year by participating in the event as it makes its way through your region, by flying one of the 49 designated flights or by controlling. Pilots are welcome to start your journey anywhere along the event; expect congested airspace and challenging approaches into a number of locations around the world.

As always, we are looking for all ARTCCs that will be seeing WF arrivals, departures and/or overflights to staff up appropriately for an event of this size, even -- as best you can -- even during the school/work day and in the middle of the night.  Overflight Centers should plan on 1-3 CTR controllers.  Arrival/Departure airports should plan on needing 1-2 CTR, 2-3 APP, 1 DEP, and a full cab, including TWR, GND and DEL!  Matt Bartels has already started a staffing thread in the Event Coordination forum; ECs and facility staff should be using that is primary guidance.

For more information, including route details, flight plans, suggested scenery links and updates throughout the event, please visit: www.worldflight.com.au go to the OPERATIONS|DOWNLOADS to get the files.

Controlling WorldFlight, and cooperating with WorldFlight Controllers
Reminder that WorldFlight controllers are authorized to control any USA airspace where VATUSA controllers are not present, or not present in sufficient volume to ensure an efficient, effective turnaround/event.  Most will defer if a VATUSA controller comes online, but are not required to.  WF controllers can and will also come on and assist in cases where the home facility does not bring enough controllers to make it an effective, efficient process for the WF flights.  Best bet for good relations is if a WF controller is online and you'd like to staff, come on as an OBS, identify yourself as a home ARTCC controller, and offer to either relieve the WF controller if they wish, or ask where you can be most useful.  Or if you're controlling and a WF controller offers to help, take them up on the help -- they are probably asking politely because they already see an efficiency/effectiveness problem, or see one coming!  The idea here is to stay friendly, keep up good relations, and make it a great experience for everyone.  Whatever you do, DO NOT argue with a WF controller.  Yes, they put their pants on just like the rest of us, but are highly trained and experienced to provide a good ATC service for WF across the globe, and may just see something brewing that you do not.

All affected ARTCCs should treat this as an event, and should solicit and staff appropriately.  If unable to staff per the guidelines above, seek ACE team help.  If there still isn't enough staffing, do the best you can to staff the best you can, but let your controllers know that WF controllers are there to help and they should be accepted into the event with all the warmth/friendliness/cooperation that another home controller would receive.

Everyone should note/remember that WF is a significant VATSIM event, and is a great workout for our affected ARTCCs.  Each leg generally has 40-120 aircraft all shooting for the same arrival and departure times, so the best strategy is to staff up for a 2-4 hour event ensuring at a minimum CTR, TRACON, TWR and GND (and DEL if possible) are staffed as outlined above.  Like CTP, PDCs should be in use at fields/facilities where PDCs are normally used (and I don't mind you using them just for the event at fields where they are normally not used) -- it makes a HUGE difference in terms of efficiency!  I don’t think most ARTCCs have always understood the level of traffic, commitment and staffing needed to run a good, if not flawless, WF event.  And some of it is during the school/workday, some of it is in the middle of the night, so it’s really important that the ARTCCs, if they do it right (which I want them to), take it seriously, advertise, guarantee staffing, get help when needed, etc.  It’s truly a wonderful opportunity, particularly for facilities that don't normally see as much large volume, global traffic like we see during the other major VATSIM global event, Cross The Pond.  And this is even better/crazier, as we're slamming a huge number of arrivals AND departures into the same airport!  With the extreme traffic density, all controllers should remember to do whatever they can to be as accommodating as possible.  There may be some "normal" rules for "normal ops" that need to be bent in order to work the extraordinary amount of traffic.  I assure you, continued review of statistics on the WorldFlight events over the years affirms that the fatality/injury/accident rate from parking aircraft in strange places, bending wake turbulence separation rules, etc. still falls in the acceptable range.

Please remember that, in addition to the fun of flying and controlling with WorldFlight, these are great charities to donate to.  For more information on the USA WorldFlight team and the USA team's chosen charities, go to http://www.worldflightusa.com  It's especially poignant this year, as the hurricanes and associated storms that hit the Southern USA a couple of months ago destroyed the WorldFlight USA Team's B737 simulator.  One of the challenges for the WorldFlight USA team will be to completely rebuild the simulator the week before WorldFlight, so they can fly the simulator during WorldFlight 2017.  But they need our help financially to help make that a reality.

Events / Cross The Pond - Facilities Looking for Additional Help
« on: October 04, 2017, 11:33:49 AM »
All,

I am a huge proponent in having more than enough controllers for an event as important as CTP.

In the past, facilities have reached out to the ACE Team for support, but for something as huge as CTP, where the US easily needs more than 30 CTR controllers working the event, I'm a fan of casting a wide net.  For Eastbound, the calls for help are usually all or mostly for Enroute positions.

Start time would depend on the facility, but facilities are generally looking for help starting around 11Z or so, will take anything they can get but would love folks that could put in a 5-7 hour shift.  Of course, in my opinion, the more the merrier, and I hope if there is enough outpouring of support, that the facilities will accept the extra help!

This is a GREAT way for controllers that don't usually get to work CTP streams to get that experience.  It's truly one of the toughest, and most rewarding, things you can do on VATSIM!

That said, if you're in a "prime time" position, CTP is not for the faint of heart!  People applying should be not only competent, but confident in their abilities to work a ton of traffic for several hours in a row.  It's a demanding, but awesome, experience.

I'll list the facilities, open positions that I know of at this point, and contact information in case you want to contact the facility of your choice directly.  Facilities should feel free to reply with any updates and I'll update this post.

News / VATUSA Announces new Southern Region Air Traffic Director
« on: September 30, 2017, 03:13:46 PM »
Please join me in welcoming Brighton McMinn as the newest Southern Region Air Traffic Director, VATUSA.  In addition to his most recent role as Air Traffic Manager at the Fort Worth ARTCC, Brighton has previously served as DATM of the Fort Worth and Oakland ARTCCs, and as Training Administrator and Events Coordinator at the Houston ARTCC.  Brighton also serves as a VATSIM Supervisor and Instructor.  Brighton shares the Division's vision to build a strong culture, increase training bandwidth, improve retention and spur growth.  I look forward to seeing continued great things from the Southern Region.

Please also join me in thanking Kevin Copeland for his nearly 3 years of service in the role.  Although Kevin needs to step back to devote more time to work and personal matters, he has agreed to help with the transition.  Kevin, you've done a great job, often under trying circumstances, and I truly appreciate all you've done.  we look forward to seeing more of you as life allows.

« on: June 11, 2017, 03:43:06 PM »
With many controllers live from FlightSimCon in Hartford, CT, and many, many others from across the country, VATUSA will do it's best to liven up the skies in and around the entire United States.  We expect about 20 or so controllers and pilots to be controlling and flying live at FlightSimCon at the Sheraton Hotel, Bradley Airport.  And we're hoping that controllers from all 22 facilities within VATUSA will help us light up and liven up the skies!

Simple Insanity / April Fools! VATSIM Update
« on: April 01, 2017, 07:37:34 AM »
Team USA!

It's been a while since our last update, and so I wanted to fill you in on the latest updates coming from the last 2 BoG meetings.

Probably the most exciting development, and one that's linked to an issue even that has been discussed even more than voice unicom, is the continually deteriorating pilot quality on the network.  Well, after significant discussion, VATSIM is nearly ready to roll out an exciting new opportunity for our members.  Controllers, when faced with a pilot that is truly not cooperative or able to fly properly, and a Supervisor is not able to assist the pilot, will now have the ability to remove pilots from the network (temporarily, of course, for 15 minutes).  The .pilothelp command has completed beta testing and will be ready to launch effective May first (for which I'm sure a lot of controllers will be doing a May Day dance (flowers optional!).  The correct syntax of the command will be .pilothelp XXX123 Short description of the pilot deviation (where XXX123 is the pilot's callsign.  The affected pilots will then be disconnected from the network with a brief explanation that they have been disconnected, by whom (for increased controller accountability), the short text description of the violation, and a final statement encouraging the pilot to review the PRC and invest in pilot training through the PTD program.  It is important to note that, in order to prevent against abuses, every time the command is used, all pertinent details will be logged to the network, and an email will be sent to both the VATSIM Vice President of Pilot Training, the VATSIM Vice President of Conflict Resolution, and the VATSIM Office Of Pilot Services.  This is to both prevent against abuses as well as to get the pilots the training and services they need to be better trained and equipped to fly on the network in the future.

I know there are a lot of built-in protections here, and I caution you all very strongly now to use the command sparingly, perhaps very sparingly.  As I mentioned, emails get sent out to very high levels right away, your information is logged, and statistics will be tracked monthly looking for abuses.  And abusers, after one warning, will also be subject to disciplinary action, including suspension and permanent removal from VATSIM.  These protections were required (and smart, frankly) to guard against potential abuses of the system.

Many of you will be excited to know that the voice unicom proposal is indeed moving along nicely (though not fast enough for most peoples' desires, I'm sure!).  One of the features will be the addition of TWO frequencies -- Unicom on 122.8, and Multicom on 123.45 for pilot-to-pilot coordination and general chit-chat.  This was important, as one of the tougher pieces of discussion was regarding many pilots' penchants for carrying on irrelevant discussion on unicom.  As long as folks use the correct frequency, this should no longer be a concern.  Again, on the subject of checks and balances, one important check and balance is that each transmission will be recorded, time-stamped, and saved for 30 days in the event of a potential disciplinary investigation.  So pilots should not feel free to fly around dropping f-bombs on Unicom or on Multicom; this will all be recorded along with timestamp, GPS location, callsign, CID and a list of everyone in the Unicom/Multicom voice channel so witness statements can be collected.  Although, as you can tell, significant progress has been made, a formal implementation date is not yet available, as the recording systems have not yet completed beta testing.

I'm glad to be able to give a quick glimpse into these improvements.  This communication is certainly not meant to be an all-inclusive briefing on the new systems; those will be coming from VATSIM as the time gets closer.  I'm sure there will be a million questions.  Some I may be able to answer, many I may not.  For those folks that are already somewhat aware, hang tight, I'd like to answer all the initial questions in one coordinated reply response so we don't have a million threads coming out of this post.  I'm away for the weekend with my family, so I'll do my best to answer what I can later tonight, but we're seeing a Broadway show tonight and I'm honestly not sure what time I'll be able to respond, and if it's not today, it will be tomorrow.  In the meantime, sit back, relax, and prepare for these exciting and truly beneficial improvements!

Events / Sticking it out!
« on: February 16, 2017, 10:57:51 AM »
Just a quick shout out for the guys at ZKC.  I've said it many times before, FNO is our flagship legacy VATUSA event hosted every week; it has roots going back to the beginning of VATSIM (for you old timers, think TGIF....).  Although most ARTCCs advertise a 4-5 (and sometimes 6) hour event, there are often MANY pilots still trying to get in/out after the "official" end time of the event.  And it's especially tough for those who live in the Pacific, Alaskan and Hawaiian time zones.  I have repeatedly, for years, asked folks to do their best to have at least one or two controllers prepared to handle overflow for every FNO.  Some times it works, many times it doesn't.

ZKC hosted FNO this past Friday night, and recognizing that there were still a ton (I counted 71) aircraft still inbound as of the advertised end of their event, many of their controllers stayed on past the advertised end time -- up to 2 hours extra for some folks after an already-long shift! -- and made sure everyone made it in.  BRAVO!!  Great job, and thank you for your dedication to serving as many VATSIM members as you possibly could.  It was great to get some positive from many pilots that came in late and still had service.  AWESOME and THANK YOU!!
