Who said this was a joke/prank?
The body of the post.

(Granted, the header - containing the date - didn't hurt, either.)

What makes you think they aren't still??
Hence the "is" in the "is/was". (I added the "was" just for wishful thinking )

Honestly, most of Don's post seemed so very nearly plausible that I, too, forgot for a moment (or two) what day it was. Hats off to you, Don. I look forward to the potential copy-paste of this thread after the next EC meeting.

Wanna talk about scary? All of this was viewed by many of us as a hilarious joke/prank to pull on April 1st. The scary part is... the EC is/was actually seriously considering all of this GRP crap.

Blame ZFW for putting an "&" (which apparently isn't getting properly translated to "&") in their event title.

Gradients are so 1990s.
Describing things that differ with your personal tastes as being "so 1990s" is something that is, like, so 1990s.

Not one to interfere but I really like Ryan's Logo.
Which one? As of this posting, he has four.

As for the star issue... I personally like it and agree with Ryan on its necessity. Sure, on the smaller sizes, you can't see that it's the typical 10-sided geometrical shape so commonly used to represent a star. Darn. Look up at the night sky some time and tell me how clearly you can make out the apparent shape of those tiny little specs of glimmering light.  (In other words, I like the fact that the definition of its shape fades with the smaller sizes.) Plus, it's hard to support the ol' "Red, White, and Blue" without having the "White" somewhere.

EDIT: And just because I'm usually difficult (but in this case it really does align with my preferences as well)... I would vote for an option that used the blue from the 3rd image in either the 'U' and 'A' or the 'S', but I'd probably go more for the red used in the other images. I could go either way on the text at the bottom.

The Flight Deck / Vpilot windows issue

Did you enable the "Keep window visible" option in vPilot settings?

Additionally, ensure FSX's "Pause on task switch" option in Settings - General is unchecked.

The Control Room Floor / Handoff vs. Transfer of Control
« on: January 19, 2015, 10:06:43 PM »
Didn't have to read all of the supporting quotes to know that my understanding aligns with yours, but it's good to see you at least did the leg work.

VATSIM is indeed a learning environment, and it sounds like the staff of the other facility has an opportunity to learn something (such as the fundamental of radar control - what a handoff is).

EDIT: Heck, if we want to talk "common sense"... was this vectoring something that could potentially be done on a regular basis? If so, then one might consider looking at the nearby airspace to determine if it would make sense to update the LOA to include something to the tune of:

[!--quoteo--][div class=\\\'quotetop\\\']QUOTE [/div][div class=\\\'quotemain\\\'][!--quotec--]A radar handoff and communications transfer constitute transfer of control for turns up to 20 degrees and transponder code change without coordination.[/quote]

The first example, of an aircraft who is in ZME, and not responding to ATC is a particular case in point: if there is no immediate conflict then it's very simple: no wallop.
What if it's a new pilot who is unaware of the expectations/requirements of pilots in controlled airspace, how the pilot client works, or how communication in general works on VATSIM (e.g. just because LAX_CTR is online and providing top-down service doesn't mean you can tune to the real world LAX_DEL's frequency and expect it to work)?

I generally do a .wallop in those cases just because I personally think it could be a disservice to the pilot by not doing so. I'll include "no immediate conflict" in the message, and I'm in no way expecting/hoping said pilot will be disconnected from the network (unless (s)he is actually AFK and later develops into a conflict). If it's a pilot who went AFK and hoped that 12 hour long haul flight would rack up the VA hours... well, I'll try to not be too disappointed if/when the pilot gets disconnected.

If it is a new pilot, however, then hopefully I've put him/her in contact with a SUP who would be glad to show them where they can learn more about how VATSIM works and what the expectations are for pilots who fly on it.

The Control Room Floor / Great video of Seattle Final Approach

One fun snippet occurs between 35:41 - 35:50. In that span of a mere 9 seconds, the controller manages to spew forth the following without passing out:

[!--quoteo--][div class=\\\'quotetop\\\']QUOTE [/div][div class=\\\'quotemain\\\'][!--quotec--]Alaska 467 turn right heading 080; maintain visual separation from the heavy MD10 - he's for the left runway - caution wake turbulence; join the final at 3,200 or above; cleared visual approach runway 16C.[/quote]

EDIT: And of course there's this exchange at 58:04:

[!--quoteo--][div class=\\\'quotetop\\\']QUOTE [/div][div class=\\\'quotemain\\\'][!--quotec--]ASA543: Finally saw the 7-3 going to the left runway.
SEA_F_APP: ASA543, roger, maintain visual separation from that aircraft - he's for the left runway; cleared visual approach 16C.
ASA543: Cleared for the visual 16C, don't hit the other 7-3, ASA543.[/quote]

For example, they might learn that short, concise readbacks; prompt compliance with all instructions; and the absence of the calamity that is text-only pilots are things you'll have to join the FAA to experience.

So I was bored over my lunch break and decided to browse through some of AOPA's online courses. One dealt with the topic title, so I decided to give it a whirl. I learned a couple finer details here and there, but I also learned that they quickly ran out of possible answers to some of their questions. For example:

The Control Room Floor / C1 Controller seeks I1 in ARTCC

I have been a vatsim controller with my c1 rating for years now and I have still been passed over for promotion.
Perhaps that was because in those years, you've only accumulated around 60 hours on a CTR position, whereas many others might hit that number in a month or two?

Just a casual observation from an outsider looking in...
