NOTAMs / Statement on Event Broadcast Message
« on: November 01, 2018, 07:24:00 AM »
****ATTENTION ALL ARTCC's*****

Official Statement from the office of VATUSA5:

Nov 1st, 2018

On Monday October 29th, 2018 a broadcast email was sent out to VATUSA controllers referencing a event taking place for ZNY on 11/2 and 11/3. This message was sent out without consultation of VATUSA5, and thus created some confusion among the facilities.

The purpose of this message was to communicate the importance of a Division wide event taking place on Saturday Nov 3rd, TRANSON: Live from Philadelphia.https://forums.vatusa.net/index.php?topic=8196.0
ZNY Staff had reached out to VATUSA in order to help promote such a huge event to ensure adequate ATC coverage for everyone participating.

Policies and procedures are currently being developing to ensure proper protocols will be followed for any future broadcast messages specifically related to events. Event communication and promotion will to continue to follow normal protocols until new ones are established. Thank you all for your continued hard work and dedication to the VATUSA events.

The Control Room Floor / Re: Radar Identification Methods
« on: October 28, 2018, 01:03:01 PM »
I've noticed while flying around the country on the network, controllers have used more than one method of radar identification to radar ID me. Which is cool and all... but just in case it wasn't on purpose, I figured I'd write up a little bit on it, to give you a perspective of someone who spends about 60% of his real world transmissions establishing radar with someone! :)

This is a perfect venue for this discussion Shane. The live network, in a condescending tone really isn’t the way to effectively educate someone:)

Virtually all “re-education” (workload permitting) with pilots should be done in private chat. I think this philosophy holds true with most experienced controllers. This keeps VATSIM the learning and friendly environment it’s designed to be.

In the RW, I’ve never (0%) heard a controller critique their student on VHF comms.

While I totally understand your point here...

I have totally heard plenty of times while flying “for future reference....” usually only happens at smaller fields or not busy airspace, other times it’s the standard got a phone number for ya! Doh!!

Best thing we can do is just use your best judgement in a time/place to educate a pilot/controller. While what Shane wrote is excellent and I hope people learn from it, the reality is only a small percentage read the forums.

If your flying in a ARTCC that you don’t control at, submit feedback, or try and find out their TS info and have a chat with the controllers. I would not have a problem at all if someone like Shane or anyone came into TS to educate me on something or had a question. ATMs take not of this please, don’t make your TS and/or discord a damn fortress.

The Flight Deck / Re: Updates for Navigation?
« on: October 17, 2018, 07:13:03 AM »
You can use simbrief

https://www.simbrief.com/home/?page=home

Once you make a account (free) it can flightplan for you. After you make one you have the option of downloading the flightplan for FSX/P3D. That allows you to select flightplan from within the sim that loads it up on your GPS for you to fly. While this works, I highly caution using this method since going direct to a fix or amending the route is almost impossible. However this is the quickest/cheapest method in achieving what you want to do.

If your able to do so I would highly suggest you invest in a good payware aircraft such as PMDG 737 or a Aerosoft Airbus, something with a advanced FMS that will allow you fly routes accurately with SIDS/STARS.

Also a good investment would be a Navigraph subscription. This service provides you with updates to the AIRAC cycle which updates the FMS of the various payware aircraft.

If you don't want to go the payware route for aircraft you can always file /A which lets us ATC know you can only navigate via traditional airways, VOR to VOR, or any Non-GPS required SID/STAR. A quick search on youtube there are plenty of videos out there to help with this. I just found this one which explains very nicely how to file/plan a IFR flight plan using only VOR navigation. By using traditional navigation VORs or fixes most likely FSX will have it in its GPS database.

Events / Cross the Pond Eastbound 2018
« on: October 16, 2018, 09:02:01 AM »

Cross the Pond Eastbound 2018

On Saturday 27th October 2018, VATSIM is excited to bring you the latest edition of Cross The Pond!

Cross The Pond has been a bi-annual tradition on VATSIM for well over 10 years. The eastbound edition sees pilots depart a selection of airports in North America and fly transatlantic to European destinations. Full ATC, including Oceanic, is provided throughout. All our recent connection records have been broken during Cross The Pond, making it VATSIM’s busiest regular event.

Departure slots will be available between 1100z and 1500z from the following airports:-

John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK/KJFK)
Logan International Airport (BOS/KBOS)
Denver International Airport (DEN/KDEN)*
Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ/CYYZ)
Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD/KIAD)

* Departures slots from Denver will run from 1000z to 1300z due to the increased distance.

We will be landing aircraft across the evening in Europe at the following airports:-

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS/EHAM)
Frankfurt Airport (FRA/EDDF)
Manchester Airport (MAN/EGCC)
Zurich Airport (ZRH/LSZH)

We’re excited to welcome a new airfield to this event, giving pilots opportunities to partake in this event in a new and hopefully enjoyable way. Over 500 slots will be made available, with bookings opening on Saturday 20th October at 1700z at the new Cross The Pond website. While you’re waiting, the site contains plenty of information, including FAQs, if you are new to this event, or if you need to brush up on your Oceanic procedures!

We are looking forward to another enjoyable event and thank the partner airports, ACCs/ARTCCs and divisions for their hard work.

See you in the skies!

On behalf of the CTP Planning Team

I checked all 3 ARTCC websites and didn't find any of these preferred routes you speak of.  :'(

Apologies that the info you seek has not been posted.

Flightaware IFR Route Analyzer is a great tool to get current, day of flightplans being used. They will be filed correctly for direction of landing at the destination, as well as appropriate flight levels. This can be found here:
https://flightaware.com/statistics/ifr-route/

Just use caution when looking at flightplans, some may show up as this    ATL265028 AEX SKNRD4
That ATL265028 is a VOR radial/distance point of which ATC gave a flight direct AEX to join the SKNRD4 arrival.
Instead make sure a flightplan looks like this KAJIN2 STNGA MHZ AEX GESNR1 As you can see its a complete with the SID/STAR associated with it.

Another note is with ATL and IAH some RNAV STARS are runway configuration dependent such as landing "EAST" or "WEST" As a example if you filed the DOOBI2 arrival into KIAH that arrival is only designed if KIAH is landing to the WEST (26R/L, 27). If your flying into KIAH you need to be aware of this and be ready for a potential re-route by Houston Center because the weather might change. The notes on the bottom of the FAA charts give you a heads up on which RNAV STAR corresponds with the other configuration.

As you can see the NOTE about when landing EAST expect the SKNRD arrival. There will never be a number associated with the arrival on the notes since they don't want to have to change every chart when a new number comes out.
Also just as important these NOTES on the bottom tell you critical information that has to be flown by the pilot. See how it talks about speed restriction? It doesn't show anything on the chart itself about holding 280kts on the descent, but you are required to unless ATC tells you otherwise, or otherwise depicted on the chart.

This was probably a little more then you asked/wanted this morning but just throwing this out there for this particular FNO since these are usually problem areas pilots do not fully understand.

Good Morning from the VATUSA Events Department!

A lot of event work gets done behind the scenes between my office and the ARTCC's. Sometimes I forget that there is the rest of you all out there! I am reaching out to hear your comments/opinions/suggestions for VATUSA events.

Are the events monthly adequate to what you would like to see?
FNOs: Are the times working out so there is ATC online when you want to get in? or take off?
Is there certain types of events you would like to see more?

These above are just some quick questions I thought of, please ask ANYTHING you would like. I look forward to what the community has to say!
