This is a general check to make sure this event is still a "go"

Reason I am asking is this event was posted on 4/20/18 and no event banner has been created, and a very light description was made. If it is still happening that is fine, just checking.

The Control Room Floor / Re: Which ARTCC to join?
« on: May 07, 2018, 02:09:26 PM »
Hello all, new VATUSA member here with some questions.

I'm looking for an ARTCC with the optimal balance of realism, traffic, and availability of controller slots; my real-world location is in California. I'll include my impressions of the best centers for each characteristic, based on what I've read/seen, and would greatly appreciate any additions or comments.

Realism: I've heard a lot about ZNY, ZBW, and ZDC in this regard; ZNY has been particularly recommended for a realistic environment.

Traffic: ZDV and ZMA have been pointed out as some of the busiest centers in VATUSA

Availability of controller slots/training: ZLA and ZMA seem to have some of the most rigorous training programs, as well as high availability of training and controlling opportunities.

I would very much appreciate any input from forum members regarding this.

Welcome to VATUSA!

I would take the time and find out different ARTCC's Teamspeak info and talk to some people, get a feel for what that ARTCC is doing. Ask questions, lots of questions! No better way to find out if your going to like a place then to talk to some people and see if it's a fit for you.

IMHO every ARTCC in VATUSA strives to have a good balance of realism, and fun! To me its about the community aspect of it, do they hang out on TS just chat sometimes, do they play other games when not controlling, are they people who like to fly when not controlling, etc...

Just my 2 cents, hope you find a good fit!

Here is a time lapse of my flight analysis. It starts overhead the JHAWK intersection on the edge of the MCI TRACON at 8:15PM, and ends at 9:45PM. The video was compressed 128x in the sim, and an additional 8x in post editing. The total time from JHAWK to touchdown was about 1hr and 30mins

Link to time lapse: https://gyazo.com/b466bd2660d6f91c3aaac6af76fc4dd5

Nice little time lapse!

I noticed on VATSPY at one point I counted 51 arrivals in a 30 minute period. Real world AAR rate for that airport is 52/hr. So basically the airport saw double the capacity of what it can handle in the RW.

You might want to check your math. If you got 51 arrivals in 30 minutes and then none in the following 30 minutes, you’ve achieved a total arrival rate of 51. If you had 51 arrivals in both periods, then it would be double the real world rate. It’s a small discrepancy but worth mentioning.

Regardless if I check my math....51 arrivals in a 30 minute period does not work for a airport such as KMCI. As clearly shown above with the time lapse the holding, crazy vectoring, was all due to traffic saturation.

This is a trending problem week after week nowadays. FNO or any event goes on for 3 to 4 hours, there is usually some time period where the traffic far exceeds capacity (runways, radio congestion, pilots not complying, etc...) There is a lot of discussion I hear lately about TMU and if it should division led or ARTCC led, either way I think it would be extremely beneficial to have a small group of people watching over an event to help out with TMU. Makes a huge difference in the long run of a event.

General Discussion / Re: Keep Port Open
« on: April 27, 2018, 08:00:20 AM »
No. Operating systems don't allow two applications to bind to the same UDP port.
A solution idea - some lightweight software which would mute your mic input to vSTARS/vERAM/VRC and press your push to talk every 30 seconds or so. When you manually press your PTT, it works normally.

Would running a Macro program solve this? I.E have it hit your PTT every 30 seconds for 1 second?

The Control Room Floor / Re: Metering on the Network
« on: March 20, 2018, 08:55:43 AM »
This has always been something I wish most ARTCC's managed better was TMU. You see it over and over again traffic levels far outpace the controller capacity, network capacity (voice), airport capacity, etc...

A lot of people aren't mentioning this, what about staffing levels the event ARTCC has? If an ARTCC can only staff one guy on finals for a position that can fit 3 final controllers, what is his limit? I personally feel anytime you get more then 10 pilots on your frequency for a very busy sector (vectoring, finals, arrivals, etc..) due to voice and network limitations you can quickly lose control over sequencing. The pilots are NOT professional pilots and thus add to more radio calls being necessary also.

Many times when working ZTL (non events) I and a few other controllers would simulate re-routes due to weather in the ATL area. You would be surprised on how many pilots participated and LOVED the fact we were simulating that! We occasionally would get the pilot who did not want to participate and we would just send him on his normal route no questions asked. So while many in this thread are afraid pilots will not want to sit on the ground, or just disconnect, yes some will do that, however I think you will be surprised on how many would actually like that.

Also how many times have you seen a FNO where they have 4 center controllers online but only 1 is super busy why the other 3 are twiddling their thumbs??? ARTCC's need to be able to recognize this and take initiative on opening up further sectors, rerouting traffic, something. Again using ZTL as a example since I am the most familiar with it...They use 1, 2, 3, next to their position name when staffing a position. Why you may ask?? So that if you have 4 center controllers online they can very quickly switch frequencies to open/close different sectors without having to log off and change callsigns. To this day I really do not understand why other ARTCC's have not adapted this policy, it works wonders.

Makes me wonder how they would handle something like SFO or MKE, where you can have a single taxiway intersecting 2 active runways. If you tell someone, for example, at MKE, to get to 1L by saying "Runway 1L, taxi via J, H, K, T, R, hold short of runway 1R", would that still effectively give them permission to cross 31R? Or would ATC have to add in a "hold short runway 1R, hold short runway 31" and soak up more air time to handle the ambiguity?

BL.

In paragraph a, you as the controllers are required to issue the hold short instructions: "If it is the intent to hold the
aircraft/vehicle short of" a runway. If you don't INTEND to actually hold them short, (like you're just waiting for the first crossing to complete) then you don't have to give the hold short instruction for the second runway.

I understand that completely. However, the problem that we have here is when you have an taxiway that crosses two active runways, and those runways intersect eachother. if the controller tells a pilot to hold short of one runway, does it still effectively give them permission to cross the other runway, especially if they intersect at the same location?

Again, reference KMKE: http://155.178.201.160/d-tpp/1803/00262AD.PDF

Runway 1R/19L, 13/31, and taxiway K all intersect at the same place. By this change, would you effectively have to tell the pilot to hold short of both runways, as it now specifically states that they must get permission to cross any runway on the way to their assigned runway, let alone must explicitly be given a hold short instruction for each of those runways that need to be crossed?

BL.

Good observation!

Best example I can find from the 7110 is this:
PHRASEOLOGY−
“Cross (runway) at( runway/taxiway), hold short of
(runway)”, or
Cross (runways) at (runway/taxiway).

Reference that key difference, runways.

From a realistic standpoint, and pilots perspective, I don't think they would issue cross both runways when they intersect like that. It would depend on which operation the airport was in, if they were using 19L/R I would want to hear cross rwy 19L since that is applicable to the direction of traffic landing/departing.

I would assume I would hear it like this:
N123MB, cross rwy 19L at K, hold short rwy 19R

A few housekeeping items mate:

Check your signature vZME events coordinator :)

Also DST goes into effect March 11th @ 0200AM EDT
So event time needs correcting 2300-0300Z if you are keeping 7-11PM EDT.

Cheers!

Thanks for looking out! How's that?

Looks great! :) Fun event
